A Trash the Dress VIDEO Shoot??

July 12th, 2007 @ 8:30 am by Mrs. Emerald

Hrmm, now this is something new! The whole Trash the Dress photo shoot trend is gaining popularity these days, but a VIDEO shoot is definitely newsworthy!! I would totally do this except for the fact that I adore my dress too much and I don’t think I’d have the stomach to trash something with so much sentimental value (what can I say, I’m a sentimental fool)… but I digress.

Remember my friend Amy, whose amazing wedding videos I shared a few weeks ago? Well apparently she couldn’t get enough of her videographer, Still Motion, so she went back (to Toronto) for some more fun. This time, a Trash the Dress video AND photo shoot (gotta love vendors who can do it all!!). Check out the amazing video on theirblog (7.9.09 post). *sigh*

If only they weren’t in Canada.
If only they weren’t booked on my wedding day.
If only, if only, if only.
Must. Stop. Gushing laughin022

And here are some of of the still photos from their shoot (additional photos can be seen here.)

Miss Emerald,

If only we were available for your day, we would love to come down and shoot for you. If your a friend of Amy’s then we know you would be awesome to work with. If you can get up the stomach to trash your dress, you should enter our ‘trash contest’- and who knows, we might actually get a chance to work together after all.

Too bad because 1. my wedding isn’t until June 08, and 2. it’s in Canada.

Wow - the fountain is a little much for me. Poor dress. ;-) Those others though, amazing pics and you definitely wouldn’t be taking those on your wedding day!

I think thats the first time I have ever heard someone say too bad it is in Canada. Normally I say too bad it’s in the US. Yay Canadian talent!

Wow! What great work. I definitely don’t have the heart to trash my dress, but for amazing pictures like those… who knows.

Some of the other videos on the site almost had me in tears. So sweet!

beautiful pictures! But no, I don’t have to stomach to do that to my dress. Maybe another dress, but not my wedding dress :-)

That was great. But I am with Sally on this, I spent too much money and I really love my dress. Who knows maybe in 10 years when I am less attached to it I will have the courage to trash it.

i personally would rather donate my gown to someone who couldn’t afford one rather than trash it, but that’s my own opinion (i can’t say that i’m not being somewhat wasteful in other ways for the wedding). i think it’s interesting how this has become a trend in post-wedding dress “preservation”.

in the old days women mostly either made their own dresses or had them custom made, and they were passed down through generations and valued as an heirloom. since weddings were pretty simple for the most part and photography wasn’t as good back then, things like the gown and the bouquet were the only reminders. each element held special significance (i’m just generalizing, not saying all weddings were like this).

if you’re planning to trash your dress - are there other elements from your wedding you are planning to keep to potentially pass down one day?

Haha, I probably wouldn’t be game (but maybe I’d purchase a cheaper dress for the sake of these awesome pictures?). Sadly, it is the most trashing done to the dress that produces the most beautiful pictures (I love the fountain one!).

I actually just did “trash” my dress in Atlantic City. It wasn’t as bad as I thought - just some sand and water on the edges. There were 11 brides chosen and about 60 photographers, so each bride had about 4 photog’s following them around the boardwalk. My husband came along and I even got my videographer from the wedding to want to participate, so I get a VIDEO too, all for free! Now all I have to do is have my dress cleaned as I had planned to do anyway. It was all worth it for some great shots of us on the beach, in a boat, on a merry-go-round, eating cotton candy and so on….

I knew someone would post this. I’m a humongous ( I haven’t used that word since about 5th grade) fan of the still motion blog. They flippin’ rock!

I saw this when Still Motion posted it and it looks AWESOME! I’m actually considering a video.

RE: people who are worried about “ruining” the dress. Honestly, MANY brides that I’ve talked to, including cleaners - say that getting it in water (which is what most people do) does NOT ruin the dress. It probably does depend on what the fabric is, but if you’re interested, I suggest you call a few gown cleaners and see what they say.. that’s what one of my brides did for an upcoming shoot. A photographer’s goal isn’t to ruin your dress, but to create beautiful images where you’re NOT worrying about “getting the dress dirty” :)

P.S. I knew a bride who did triple duty on her dress. She wore it, “trashed” it, and then got it nicely clean and donated it. You can still donate your dress if you don’t damage it aside from dirt/water and give it a good cleaning afterwards.
