About Beehive

Beehive

July 12th, 2007 @ 4:15 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. Sept Bride is looking for gift ideas for a male and female reader.
  2. gabzoots would like recommendations for a song to dance to with her stepfather (no “little girl” references, please).  Also, since she’ll also be dancing with her dad, which dance should come first?
  3. rachel and her fiance are considering including a hymn in their ceremony - where in the order of things should it come?  Also, would it be inappropriate to invite guests to sing along as well?
  4. 2007Bride is looking for high quality pink wrappng paper.  Any suggestions?
  5. Elena is looking for suggestions on what to put in her emergency day-of kit, what to take to the room for pre-wedding prep time (music, champagne, snacks, camera), and day-of timelines.
  6. Sari is looking for cupcake boxes for guests to take them home.

2007Bride - Paper Source has some great stuff, and usually in lots of colors. I’ve also heard good reviews about the MS collection at Michaels.

Elena - From the July 2007 board on the knot: safety pins, bobby pins, tissue, cover-up makeup, breathmints, lipstick, floss, spotstick, little scissors, pen/notepad.

From my day-after advice: Bleach pen, sewing materials (thread and needle), goo gone, mouth wash, chaffing cream/talc, immodium AD, safety pins…I think that’s it. The bleach pen, goo gone, and sewing kit were at the home where we got ready, but could be helpful (goo gone was to get a sticker off a glass we were using in the ceremony–probably not a necessary part of a kit).

I didn’t use my brooch until the reception either, so I might say it was part of the kit. ;-)

I might recommend flip flops, and/or mole skin or second skin or something for painful shoes…even the BM’s had shoe issues.

Sari - Try papermart (papermart.com)- we used the Chinese Food take out boxes ad they were great

2007 Bride - try bags and bows (http://www.bagsandbowsonline.com/) PaperSource is pretty expensive with that stuff…

Rachel, I have been to many weddings with hymns. And all have had guest participate, having it printed in your programs, or with the hymn number. Depending on your tradition, it could be anywhere in the ceremony. My tradition usually has it after vows, but before kiss and pronouncement of marriage.
If you are getting marriend in a church, the coordinator or clergy should be able to help you.

1. Sept Bride - might be fun to play off the “reader” bit and get a nice copy (or first edition if you can find it) of a favorite book of theirs or even yours, or as simple as a gift card to Borders, B&N, etc.
2. gabzoots - you should probably dance with your biological father first. Some song suggestions: a classic like What a Wonderful World or maybe Elvis’s Love Me Tender
3. rachel - hymns are great. Put it anywhere that feels right, maybe right before or after the homily. And of course, invite your guests to sing. Just print the words in your program.
4. 2007 bride - I’ve seen some gorgeous wrapping paper of all kinds at Papyrus - they’re at a lot of malls - that you can buy by large sheet squares.
5. Elena - that’s a long list. I know of some timeline templates online that you can google, snacks should not be messy or spill - things like mini pretzls or bananas…even grapes.
6. Sari - you may be able to find plain white boxes at your local bakery that you can then decorate yourself (with help) in your wedding colors or any motif you want to incorporate.

Is anyone doing/have done a hand ceremony?
I’m interested in having one, but haven’t been able to find too many specifics. What is the process?

I’m starting to plan a wedding and don’t have a clue as to what I should expect to budget for a cake. Does anyone have an idea of what (on average) a three tiered cake that can feed 100 might cost? How much did you spend on your cake?

Grace - one of the biggest factors will be the city you live in - expect to pay more in a big city, especially if you are using a bakery with a reputation, as opposed to a lady from your church who does them on the side. Expect to pay more for things like fondant work, sugar paste decorations, sometimes even elaborate icing designs. Don’t forget to also factor in travel (usually a set price per mile) and set up, and any items you may need to rent (cake stand, pillars, etc)

To give you an idea, my four-tiered cake (14″, 10″, 8″ and 6″) feeds 130 (not including the 6″ tier, which we are saving) and will have nothing but icing and ribbons. We are paying $355 for the cake, $25 for set up, and $21.75 for travel. For living in the DFW metroplex, we are getting a really good price ($2.50/slice base)

Hope this helps a little :)

QUESTION: My Church (where my finance and I are active, tithing members) is just now starting to develop “standardized wedding fees”. We are sort of like the guinea pigs and think the fees and honorariums are a bit high. What is standard to pay for your pastor(and friend) to marry you in your church?

for the hive… can someone please recommend a place online or in a store (im from NYC) where I can buy a monogram embosser? I don’t want to spend a whole lot of money. Thanks in advance.

Another question for the hive:

Vows & Ceremony - does anyone have recommendations on how to fill out a ceremony? We’re having 2 friends officiate, and don’t think it’s quite long enough.. they’re doing an intro, discuss what a chuppah symbolizes, talk about us, we’re doing vows, ring exchange, then they talk about the glass breaking, anything else??

Programs - what do you put into a program aside from the names of people in the wedding party? We’re not having any special readings, unless this is what we end up doing for the ceremony to fill it out..

M…

We were going to have a hand ceremony as well, I just loved the idea of throwing something celtic into the ceremony since we both have scot-irish ancestry…

but, I researched it on the net and most hand ceremonies are pagan now- plus its pretty elaborate because you have a cord or cloth wrapped around your hands. I wasn’t for sure if my officiant would be up for all this…

so now we are going to have a blessing of the hands. I have a copy of this beautiful verse for the officiant to read that incorporates the ‘celtic concept’ in an americanized way. I can post it here if you are interested. :)

Has anyone heard of using bell ringers instead of ringbearers?

The boys run…i.e…skip down the aisle saying ‘the bride is coming, the bride is coming’

We are thinking of doing this, but I cannot find any bells!!!
