Disney Couture

Sleeping Beauty Dress

Leave it to Disney to design a line of wedding dresses. I say this, of course, as an annual-pass-carrying member who has been to nearly all the Disney parks in the world (Disneyland/CA Adventures, Disney World, Disneyland Paris, & Tokyo Disney). But wedding dresses…I must admit I didn’t see it coming. And these are offered at couture prices ($1,100 to $3,500).

Belle Dress

Let me preface this: I love Disney. I love the movies, the Princesses…the marketing. I mean, who doesn’t want to eat a pretzel in the shape of Mickey Mouse?? But something about this is taking it too far… Although, I guess, if you can get married at the park, pay $2,500 to be brought up main street in Cinderella’s carriage and have Prince Charming’s footman be your ring bearer, why not have a dress for the occasion?! Now, I haven’t decided my opinion on the dresses. In one sense, I really want them to recreate the dresses from the movies (man, I love the dress Sleeping Beauty wears–although nobody in the world has her proportions…perhaps that’s true of ALL the princesses though). And in another sense, I appreciate what they’re going for in trying to capture the “essence” of the character (and with this tactic, they can keep churning out dresses and aren’t limited to merely what the characters wear in the movie).

Is it just me or are these poses a little provocative:

Snow White Dress

Ariel Dress

 Jasmine Dress

Which dresses would you wear? Should they try to mimic the dresses from the movies or capture the essence of the character?

I love the Belle and Jasmine dresses. I don’t think I would go around telling anyone I had a Disney dress though.

If I had $1-3000 for a wedding dress, I would get a REAL couture dress. In my opinion, these are really ordinary dresses with extraordinary prices. Not to say they are not pretty, just not worth those prices…..

oh, to answer your questions: the Belle dress and do both, have a movie replica version as well as “essence of” dresses.

Awww…I just loved Belle…I always wanted that dress too, but yeah, maybe not for my wedding. They did a great job though!

The Jasmine dress is pretty, but I would be so embarrassed to admit that I wore Disney Couture to my wedding. I’m guessing the line will do well enough though, as there seem to be a whole lot of adults who are REALLY into Disney, for whatever reason.

i agree with Red. i like the dresses, but i’m sure i could find something similar much cheaper. but i would be kinda fun to have a Princess dress. i like Belle’s though.

Only with a mouse ears headpiece!

I don’t think that the dresses do much to capture the essence, to tell you the truth. I have been a die hard Belle fan my entire life, and I don’t see much of her in that dress. Just my thoughts, though!

I like the Belle dress. I love Disney so much that it wouldn’t be a surprise to anyone if I wore a Disney wedding dress :P

If I had to pick my dress from this bunch, I’d go for either Snow White or Belle….. but I agree with AMK that I’d feel embarrassed to tell people that I was wearing a Disney dress! Just because the name evokes images of mouse ears and kiddie rides…..

I think Disney actually missed a great opportunity here by putting these in such a high price range. The dresses are pretty (much to my own surprise!) and would catch on a lot more in the $200-500 range. There need to more affordable wedding dress options and this could have done wonders for them … the opportunity to make the non-wealthy feel like a princess.

I think they compromised between making the dresses more character like and making them more mainstream, and in the end just came out with something that’s blah and looks like what’s already on the market. There’s nothing about them that stands out enough to tie them back to a character imo, and a princess dress (as AK noted) can be had for much less.

This is so backwards- the wedding dress industry has always been about making the bride feel/look like a princess- pretty much, meaning the storybook ones we know as Disney characters. Dresses are even called “princess” style, Cinderella style, etc. So, there is really nothing Disney can do here that isn’t already done a million times, except stick some mickey mouse ears on the label. They just look like regular wedding dresses- some that that I like, but all pretty ordinary.

i like the belle and sleeping beauty dress but they look more like evening gowns, they look too plain for my taste if to be used for a wedding.

I think the magic these dresses have - if any - is in their similarity to dresses worn by characters. They aren’t that outstanding as dresses but, for better and worse, I do see what they are trying to do.

But they have messed up a bit. They should stick to the character dresses and not muddle them up, and I would have to see the quality of the fabrics and such before commenting on the pricing. It would be a real gimmick to have $500 dresses at couture pricing, but if they are actually using couture techniques and expensive fabrics then maybe its right.

I like the Jasmine and Belle dresses. But I’m with a lot of you, I don’t know if I would tell people it’s a Disney dress.

And all the dresses seem more “inspired” by the look of the movies instead of recreating the actual dress.

Oh! You didn’t put up the Aurora dress! That was my favorite.

If I have found that dress before mine, I would have worn it (I say that without looking at the price tag). I just loved the dresses. :)

I love that Jasmine dress. If I had seen that before…I would have looked for something similar. But, I will be using the Jasmine photo (not from the website but from the ad is this Summer’s MS Weddings) as my hair inspiration.

I like the dresses a lot more as sketches than reality. Maybe it’s the models.

But I like the Cinderella one best. I also think it is one that ties character with essence. (Belle being the other)

Eh. Not blown away by any of these. Why buy “Disney” for that price range when you could have Vera Wang or Monique Lhuillier? I’ll stick with ML.

Ehh. The only dress I like it Jasmine’s but it’s too casual. They are all so plain and so expensive! I thought they’d do better than that.

and why do the models all look so stoic and not happy. very unlike the happiest place on earth. i get what they’re trying to do with the “inspired” by the character. but i seriously had to imagine snow white’s dress. when i think of snow white, i think of the dress with the big sleeves… not a strapless piece.

i actually love all of the dresses above, but i’d prefer it on a guest attending a black tie event, not as a bride. as mentioned above, they’re too simple for a bridal gown.

They’re okay, but hardly capture even the “essence” of the characters. Not even if you squint and have a good imagination. They’re more like a bad pun– Snow White’s dress is *white* like the *snow.* Sleeping Beauty’s is *boring* but *pretty.* Ariel’s is a *mermaid* dress… get it? get it?

They need a men’s line! Mr. L would dig a Hunchback tux. Or maybe some puffy Aladin pantaloons.

Melanie - that’s a very interesting detail that you noticed. I think, however, I would be more convinced if Belle, Snow White, and Jasmine weren’t all the same model with different colored hair (Photoshop really does wonders!)

I definitely think they need to make replica dresses. What’s the point of having one of them if no one comes up to you afterwards and says you reminded them of Cinderella in that dress? If it’s more making me FEEL like a princess than LOOKING like one, then any dress can accomplish that, can’t it? The only way to distinguish themselves is to mimic the finery we’ve always been envious of as we watched those movies and hoped for our own Prince Charming!

From the first moment I saw the Belle dress that you featured, I knew it had to be mine. I’m a bit of a Disneyphile, you see.
But no one has to know that it’s a Disney dress; I’ll know that it’s a princess dress and that’s all that matters.

I actually think the dresses are resemble the actual dresses, for the most part, but in a more modern and realistic way. Like the Belle dress? Completely reminds me of her yellow dress. I want to see a Cincerella dress since she’s my favorite, if i had the money and it looked god on me, I’d buy one!

P.S. I’m not big on the Disney thing, not big on the princess thing (why not a queen?), and I probably won’t wear a wedding dress when I get married. But I am in love with that Jasmine dress. Maybe I’ll have someone make me one like that in green, for fancy dress occasions…

If I’m paying that much money I want the dress to reflect me, not a cartoon character. I’m having a wedding not a costume contest. However, I will concede that they are very pretty and in a lower price range would probably sell well.

the couldnt very well recreate the actual dress, because jasmine wore pants and a bellys hirt and aerial (sp?) wore two shells strapped to her chest. i like what they are doing, just by getting the feel for the character. my favorite is the belle, but i would never wear it because it doesn’t match my wedding theme….it is pretty though

As someone who played Belle at Walt Disney World, I adore the idea of these dresses! The Belle one featured here is gorgeous and sophisticated, modern (yet classic) version of her ball gown in the movie from my perspective. And I love the pale gold color (so much prettier and flattering than white for me!).

The Jasmine dress shown here is my other favorite, however, it seems that it would look best on someone with a slight/willowy frame — hardly reminiscent of the curvy character who inspired it. I would think that would exclude a lot of potential buyers, price aside.

Being a Disney Bride myself, I was a little upset that they came out a little too late for me to order for my wedding. I think they are pretty and I think that they are really trying to create the whole princess for a day image.
I am having the carriage, with the footmen and all the other princess accessories, but in reality I think my dress is just a princessy and I got it for a much better price!

Anybody who thinks its stupid, or ridiculous for disney to have a line of wedding dresses needs to get over themselves. If you don’t like it, don’t buy one. Sure, they’re a little expensive, but like I said, if you don’t like it, don’t buy one. Put down the haterade.

i looove the cinderella dresses. absolutely love them. and i wouldn’t mind wearing a disney wedding dress - in my mind, it’s a subtle disney touch to my wedding. everyone knows we’re huge fans, but i don’t want an entirely disney wedding. just little touches. so my cake topper will be the cinderella/prince charming statue, and a dress would be another good subtle touch. however, that’s more than my budget! :(

I think the only winner here is the belle dress. It’s much more princessy than any of the others and that colour is a good comprimise between being bright yellow and the traditional white. In fact this is exactly the kind of dress I’ve been looking for and think it’s beautiful. (Although perhaps better with the alternative top bit as shown on Kirstie Kelly’s catwalk, this one looks a bit flimsy and unfinished.)

Disney has been around forever to me.
I have always loved his work cartoons, films, anything to do with the Disney name. Although i’m nowhere even close to being married i think i love the man more than i would my spouse to be^_^. hehehe
Maybe not in the someway tho….

Anyways i think i would be proud an Honord to be walking down the isle with his name.
Disney is a man of genious and he brought a whole lot of happiness and fun to the world that is why i would NEVER be “EMBARASSED” to where his name on such an important day!!!
