Don’t Break That Bank!

July 13th, 2007 @ 3:15 pm by Mrs. Peppermint

With the cost of weddings going though the roof, more and more discount stores and stepping up to the task. There’s a great article today on MSNBC (thanks Peppermint Pal for sending my way :-) ) about this topic. It once again proves you don’t have to break the bank to get married with style…

Can you tell which dress is $129?

I guessed correctly!

me too! :)

Jean says:

I guessed the wrong one. :(

Amy says:

i actually think it’s pretty obvious?

CS says:

Yeah, I think that these discount dresses are awesome, and will probably look into them myself.

That said, I think its always easy to tell if a dress is from a discount place or a higher end, especially in real life. My fiance (a typical blind male) can even tell.

In any case, the pleats on the bottom of the dress are a dead give-away. :)

Wow, very cool! I like the one on the left more so I guessed incorrectly. Kinda cool though, at least it means I don’t have expensive tastes right? =P Then again, I don’t pour (pore?) through wedding magazines so I wouldn’t know what is out there.

Kelly says:

I guessed but only because I just saw the cheepo one online the other day.

dougx3 says:

It’s pretty easy considering the photo on the left is lit pretty poorly. You can tell they spent more money on the photography on the right.

9.
Didi says:

they’re both beautiful but you can tell that the one on the right has a more complicated cut to it. simpler cut usually equals lower price.

ocicats says:

the dress on the left looks like it’s made of polyester. also the model on the right is doing more of an artistic pose.

I guessed correctly, but I don’t necessarily think you can always tell an inexpensive dress from a moderately priced one, at least from afar. If you stay away from a thin shinier fabric, and pay attention to unique details (or add them yourself) you’re going to have a dress that looks more expensive.

Mrs Ant says:

i also thought it was fairly obvious. and i’m sure the difference in quality/ construction/ attention to detail would be even more apparent in person.

Miss Peppermint says:

I have to confess, I guessed the wrong one–clearly I’m not reading enough about weddings. Definitely need to work on that ;-)

Clarissa says:

I guessed correctly, but I don’t think that you can say that the differences between a less expensive dress and a pricier one are always aparant in person, just because one cost much less. My dress is from JCrew, paid $250 for it on sale, and it is a much nicer dress (better fabric and workmanship) than those my friends have bought for upwards of $1500 for their weddings.

GeLLiBeLLy says:

i guessed correctly, but only because the left one looks much simpler. i would have been shocked if the left one was more expensive. i wouldn’t pay $1,100 for a wedding dress that looks like a night gown.

My says:

I would say the dress on the left because I have seen the dress before. Gotta love Target. ;)

Andrea says:

I guessed right!

wjinsf says:

I’ve been looking at wedding gowns online for so long, that I not only knew which one was $129 but also knew who sold the dresses and recognized the models… sigh.

alison says:

I can tell the difference mainly because of the models pose - more sulty, more expensive! If you put the same model in both dresses it would be harder to guess, though.

Miss Popcorn says:

I guessed correctly based on the fancier hem.

21.
Jen says:

I guessed right! The fabric on the Target dress looks cheaper and, like alison said, you can definitely tell from the models…

mary says:

I guessed right and I think it’s pretty obvious on how it’s cut and how it drapes towards the bottom. Plus the top of the right one is more detailed and the fabric looks better. It’s hard to kind of explain but you can tell.

23.
thea says:

i guessed right and thought it pretty obvious as well. the lighting, pose, details, cut.. the dress on the right seems to fit better (even if that’s just an illusion for the photo. you can’t always tell, but i think most of the time you can tell, esp in person.

24.
Ives says:

I guess right because the one on the left looks kind of cheap. The one on the right is beautiful. You can tell the difference easily.

25.
Annie says:

The first thing I look for in wedding dresses is the fabric. I almost thought this was a trick question and thought the one on the right might be cheaper b/c it could be cotton, but the draping looked so much nicer that I guessed correctly.

Jen says:

make sure if you’re looking into target dresses you order it well in advance in case you need a diff one. i ordered 2 veils trying to save money and they were AWFUL. the quality of the tulle was really cheap and the veil material wasn’t gathered or anything…it hardly looked like a veil!
