I Saw The Sign

July 13th, 2007 @ 3:35 pm by Mrs. Lime

Momzilla* is insisting that the city’s signage is not clear enough [it’s pretty clear, easy to spot, and it’s off of a major road] and that guests will get lost trying to park.  The parking lot is about a one hundred foot walk to the entrance gate of the estate.  She wanted me to ask my venue to provide parking attendants to direct people to the parking lot and then to the walkway that leads to the estate.  Um, no.  The venue does not include that, nor does it have the manpower to provide an extra two people or so.  And I am not sticking any of our guests with that chore.

So as a compromise, I had a carpenter friend saw up a few 1/4″ thick pieces of masonite and 3/4″ x 1-1/2″ stakes. In order to keep the venue’s lawns intact, I will stick them in those silver pails (99 cents each on clearance at Ikea!) and use dirt and/or some of the river rock to weigh it down and keep the sign upright.

I originally told my friend I’d be painting these white, so he made cut and measurement marks all over the wood. However, I’m running out of time and energy to paint them. I may just forget it at this point. I will be printing the text, cutting it out, and using rubber cement to stick them to the signs. Post wedding, I will peel the lettering off, use my handy dandy rubber cement pickup to get any residue off, and then they will be ready for re-use/reselling. Now I just need to dig up a fat, coarse eraser to get those pencil marks off.

*This Momzilla thing is new to me. She was totally [and happily] uninvolved for the past 12 months, but now that we’re a little less than a month out, she is suddenly demanding all sorts of weird things…

Pencil marks will not be visible at a distance, so if you don’t have time to get them erased, don’t worry too much.

Miss Lime, will the rubber cement hold up if it rains or is super-humid or anything? Just a thought….. I’d hate for your guests to not understand that the “_AR_ING” is on their left! :-)

Don’t worry about the markings on the signs, you won’t see them from a distance. Good luck with Momzilla!

I feel your pain on the Momzilla thing. She’s not a ‘zilla so much as her own emotionial issues are really coming to the surface right now as I’m trying to deal with my own!

bee, good point.

mel and jennifer, i was thinking that, and this lazy bride might just listen to you guys.

brooke, it’s summer in southern california. it’s super dry, will probably be in the 90s with like 0% humidity, and shouldn’t rain as its ours dry season (knock on wood). a friend did it at her wedding in april, and it had rained earlier that day. the letters stayed on great for her, and peeled off really easily at the end, too. lucky me had her as a guinea pig ;).

jg, that’s what i’m too lazy to do! ha! i’ll see if i can get mr. lime or someone else to do my dirty work for me ;).

aliya, i think that’s exactly it. it’s really hitting her that i’m getting married, and all the emotional stuff that comes along with that, plus some emotional baggage between us from the past is surfacing. i’m just trying to smile, be as courteous as i can, remember we do love each other underneath it all, and say no firmly but nicely.

I’d also look into those vinyl stickers already in the shape of letters - no cutting out and already have sticky and come off just fine with a bit of nail polish remover…. You can find them at Michaels or any other major craft store.

less work than erasing or cutting out letters, spray paint and clear drawer liner/book covers. you can still use the font you want and then cut around the edges, put a big ol’ sticker over the whole thing.

and if you actually do want to sell them later, you can just peel it right off.

We had a genuinely hidden site (I accidentally drive past it about every third visit), and the goom’s aunt volunteered to make signs. She hot-glued ribbon in the shape of an arrow. Fast and functional.

miss lime - what about buying a silk garland of flowers and sticking them to the post? then you do’nt need to paint them and it would look elegant.
