Hair & Makeup Trial

July 16th, 2007 @ 5:19 pm by Mrs. Onion

As I mentioned in a previous post, Mr. Onion and I went to Vermont this past weekend for our last trip before the wedding. On Saturday I had my hair and make-up trial with Sarah, the owner of Aras Salon in Burlington.I brought a few magazine clippings of hair ideas and no pictures for make-up ideas (my fault) and as a result I don’t adore the make-up. I don’t know if that’s because the only direction I gave her was “I don’t wear make-up every day so I want it to look natural” or if she just didn’t “make it happen.” She is confident she can lighten up the upper lid (tone down the pink) for the wedding. Here’s hoping!

So here is what we came up with:

I will have a clip in my hair and a veil for the ceremony. We’ll take the veil off for the reception. What do you think? Is the hair too ethereal for my dress? This is one of the downsides of planning 300 miles away. I can’t go back next weekend and try something else — this was a one shot deal! Thoughts on how to make the make-up a little more refined/subtle?

No offense, but in some of these pictures you almost look like you have a black eye…less with the eyes is a must, in my not-so-expert opinon. I LOVE the har, very beautiful and elegant! Good luck!

Don’t take this wrong, I just want to be honest. I love the make-up but you’re right, the pink needs to be toned down. As for your hair, it is a really pretty style but I think it is a little plain. Somthing like that looks like you could do it yourself and save the $$$ if you really like it. It does look lovely though.

Honestly, don’t love the makeup either. At first I thought you had a black eye in the 4th pic :( She went a little crazy with the pink. I would tell her to keep your lid a bit more smoky, and stick to silver shimmery for the brow bone. Even blues/green bring out dark hair and eyes better than pink. Look at celebrity photos for brunettes and have her mimic those.

Also, I think it looks a bit sever because of your eyebrows. She seemed to bring the color all the way out to your brow, when she should have stopped where the eyelid is — maybe if the eyebrows were shorter?

Like your hair though :)

my trial was just ok but i didn’t get another one and figured it would be ok. on the wedding day, my makeup was horrific, and my moh had to save the day. but that made me late to take pics around the city with mr bee and no getting ready pics! :(

makeup is one area you want to be completely happy with, because you won’t feel your best if you don’t look your best on your wedding day. if i could go back in time, i would have done it totally differently. is there any way you could go get another trial?

Yeah…sorry, but I have to agree. You look like you have a black eye, and she should be able to do more to cover your undereye circles and puffiness. The hair looks like something you could do yourself, and I do think it doesn’t “go” with your dress. Your dress is SO cute and fun and funky–that hair is kind of prommy and young. You have gorgeous hair and features, and this hair and makeup does not do you justice! Please know I’m not trying to be harsh to YOU but to your hair and makeup person for not doing her job very well.

I’m planning from long distance too (3000 miles) and I was not happy at all with my hair and makeup trial. I’m getting into town a couple days before my wedding and I’m going in for another–and another and another until we get it right.

Until I saw the dress it didn’t matter but I do think it is probably the wrong look for the dress - you need more 40’s oomph. Try looking at 1940’s pinup art - especially feemale artists (Pearl Frush, Zoe Mozert, Joyce Ballentyne, etc). This is actually what I used for my hair/makeup. Try this: use a creamy white under your eyebrow and in the corners of you eye - this will open them up a little more. Then don’t necessarily use brown eyeshadow - try maybe a nice dark coral/rich mauve with some sparkle - use both a lighter and a darker - darker in the deepest part of your eye. The blush - as many have mentioned is more the better in this case. And play with some lipsticks - you def. want some pop with a great dress like that. Even get a great matte color you love that will stay on for ages and just put a dab of vaseline over top to make it a little more soft and sweet. If you go even slightly vampy you’re probably gonna want a heck of a lot more curls … maybe pin curls? Go marilyn/grace kelly the dress is SO grace! The makeup isn’t not-subtle it just isn’t right. Subtle isn’t necessarily what you are probably looking for- just something that makes you look your absolute best.

PS its not the pink its the WRONG pink in the wrong places. It can work but you have to know how to do it…

I think with your dress, the hair is cute and sweet. If you do an updo you might feel more elegant.

I agree on the makeup. You have beautiful eyes, and she didn’t do them justice. The darkness under your eyes should be easy to take care of by any good makeup artist, and it will improve your pictures greatly. I would go for another trial or visit your local sephora and see what they can do for you.

I just realized you are the same bride who is the singer. Can you use the same makeup artist you used for your album cover?

The makeup is more dramtic, not the natural look you were going for. Maybe she could use a lighter pink, the color is a little bright. Or maybe she could use brown and then do a little smokey eye?

Find pictures pictures of a natural look you love and see if you can go back for a trial.

I do like the hair, simple. Your dress is beautiful. I can see it with an elegant updo, something audrey hepburnish.

Dear Ms. Onion
I just had my make-up trial as well, so I understand the concerns. My humble suggestion is to have your eyebrows professionally shaped. It is a bit of an expense to have them done, BUT well worth it. I highly recommend http://www.anastasia.net/cs/storelocator/
they have counters at a few select Norstrom’s. I think this alone w/ make your look more refined. Lastly, I think the eye color tones are off, too much red. I am confident she can meet your needs once you speak w/ her again=)

Just finished reading all the comments ..I am w the post that says you should go w/ more dramatic hair. Your dress is FUN..have vampy 40’s waves to it, the kind that fall around your face it would look awesome…the type Charlotte from sex in the city would wear…!!

I actually love your hair, it’s very pretty. It is simple, but who says there’s anything wrong with that if it’s a look you love? I think an updo would also go great with your dress, but go with what you really like.

For your makeup, I agree with the other commenters that the biggest problem is your makeup artist did not do your eyes properly. She should use the right colour (and the right opacity) coverup underneath your eyes which will cure the dark circle problem that others have mentioned. I think if she tries to create a shadow above your eyelid instead of just uniformly applying colour from eyebrow down to eyelid, you will get a nicer and more natural look. Also - I hope you don’t take all the comments about not liking the makeup too personally, please be aware it’s purely a commentary on the makeup and not your face! I think you are gorgeous and you have GREAT cheekbones, make sure you use a bit more blush to highlight your cheeks. It will give you a glow that will still look quite natural but will really highlight one of your beautiful assets. (Plus, blush tends to fade so if it’s a bit brighter than you would like at first, it will probably end up just right after a couple hours.)

i really like the idea of going with a 40s pin-up look to go with your really cute dress! i don’t know much about make up to comment on that, but overall, it wasn’t very flattering. it would be good to redo it or find someone else. good luck!

Wow, your dress is darling. And the shoes? Perfect for the look?

That said, I feel like you need to carry the look through with your hair and make-up. You have super long, gorgeous hair. It seems like the sky would be the limit with great hair ideas. Still, it really does look lovely in the pictures.

As for the make-up? I think the others have said it all. I know you can’t go back to the same place for another trial, but maybe you could get a make-up trial closer to home that you like and take those pictures with you for the real deal. That way your make-up person knows precisely what you want. Good luck!

You are too pretty of a bride to where that makeup — I am not a fan. I think that you should stick to more champagne and coppery colors, not purples. In addition, I like the hair but I agree with one of the comments above that with your dress you need a little more going on. How about a loose bun with curls?

Evening, Miss Onion! You must be a wee bit stressed right now - not fully confident with your hair/makeup trial and not sure how things will turn out day of. Hopefully you have a local Sephora to head to - show them these pics, your dress and ask them for a pile o’ tips. Take lots of pics. Communicate to your VT stylist what needs to happen when you get up there the next time - with the Sephora (or where ever works for you).

However, you my dear, are a gorgeous girl with amazing bone structure, strong brows (they are SO in right now) and killer brown eyes. Play them up! Visit a salon for eyebrow shaping - it will literally open your eyes and frame your face more than you ever thought possible. Try to visit someone who does just as much plucking (shaping) as waxing (removal).

I also have brown hair/eyes and love to use green, subtle purple or dark brown for eyeshadow/liner. (Pink is wonderful for cheeks and lips but never eyes!) A rosey brown (think Bobbi Brown, your coloring is right up her alley) lipstain with a light gloss over top that you can refresh through out the reception. The blush I’ve used for eons is “Apricot” by Bobbi Brown. If I really want it to stay I’ll use a few dabs of cream blush (BB again) then apply a dab or two of powder blush. It stays all day and all night. I’ve tried Nars’ “Orgasm” but I didn’t feel it had the same pigmentation and longevity that BB’s blusher does.

I also agree that your hair looks a little young, not sophisticated like your dress. This department I’m not as good in though!

Good luck and keep us posted!

I agree with RGML and Miss Greenbean, your dress is fun and flirty you should take advantage of it with your hair and makeup. 40’s women’s fashion was so striking and independent. I think you’d look gorgeous with pin curls and a little dramatic makeup. Or perhaps one of the updo/low buns featured in Miss Peppermints “Hair inspiration” entry.

how is pink a natural look? i guess the right shade would be ok but she used a matte bright pink from lashes to your brows. it makes you look kind of scary. It looks like halloween makeup.

i’d go for neutrals - lightly shimmery nudes, browns and maybe a touch of pink so you don’t look washed out.

and for a stronger eye to balance your full brows i’d go for a darker/more eyeliner and lots of mascara or even fake lashes.

Yeah…the dress is Audrey (sophisticated, elegant, but fun) and the hair is a little promish and young. Perhaps an updo would be better…all the women I can think of who could do that look well -Audrey, Grace, Marilyn- all had shorter hair so maybe an updo could simulate that.

I think that maybe a second makeup trial at a counter where they can show you how to apply is in order. The color doesn’t seem to fit your complexion.
As for the hair, it seems too simple and plain for the dress you’d be wearing. I’d have to side with other bees here and go with more of a old school ‘do.

with a short dress, i would definitely recommend shorter hair or an updo (low bun with loose curls?), otherwise the long hair makes it too teen ballerina

Can I be honest Miss Onion? I think that you are one of the prettiest brides here on Weddingbee — and very naturally so! The makeup doesn’t complement this, though; I feel that it overpowers your lovely features and makes me look at the makeup and not at the what is underneath. You can definitely go with less — let your natural beauty shine through! I’d say maybe some darker shadow along the lashline only, gradually fading away to a pale highlight shade right underneath the brow, and no shadow underneath your eyes (or if any, just a tiny bit along the bottom outer 1/3 of the lashline). Also, maybe ask the MUA to try interchanging matte and shimmer shadows to accent the dimensions of your eyes — matte along the lashline and just a small bit of shimmer underneath the brow.

As for the hair, I think it is really up to you as to what style you want; you are going to look great however you decide to wear it. But, the style that I think of instantly when I saw your dress (I love it, btw!) was a classy sort of updo. That said, I still think you can do whatever you want here and look wonderful!

OK — first let me say thank you for all your honest feedback. That is one of the things I love about weddingbee. I didn’t love the make-up by any means — it’s so not “it.” And I didn’t adore the hair either. I just didn’t know what to tell her to do differently once it was done. The curls are too young and too spirl-y. The teen ballerina comment really hit home — ugh!

I was hesitant to have my hair all up because I was afraid I’d look to harsh as I don’t love pictures of me with my hair all pulled back and I didn’t know where to find a happy medium. As for 1940’s styles – I didn’t want to feel like I was playing “dress up” — you know what I mean?

So with all that in mind — what do you think of this as my new hair inspiration? Katherine Heigly at the 2006 emmy’s: http://tinyurl.com/25w6zr and http://tinyurl.com/ysqlew. It’s “up” but there is still interest in the front and it’s inspired by the 40’s without being a copy of an old style.

The main thing about the make-up is that I don’t wear make-up every day so I don’t want my fiancé to see me and think “oh no — who is THAT girl?” I just want the make-up to enhance my natural beauty but of course I don’t want to be washed out in my pictures. I’ll have to do some more digging for a better series of make-up inspirations. Any make-up websites you’d recommend I peruse?

This all said, I’m afraid I don’t have confidence that this stylist is talented enough to really step up to this challenge. I think I’ll have to go for another trial (or two or three) in NYC and take pictures and send them to her and see what she says. If not my fiancé offered to leave at the “crack of dawn — even 3 am if we have to” on the Thursday before the wedding so I can have another trial in Burlington somewhere else so I’m happy. We’ll see how it goes.

Are there any weddingbee readers out there who happen to be from Burlington, VT or maybe went to school there and could recommend a salon?!

I have to agree with everyone. I LOVE your dress. And think that the hair kills the look. I’d definitely go with an updo a la Audrey Hepburn OR a the very least a vamp-ish half up look. Make-up: I agree that it looks like you have a black eye. And to me, in comparison to your other photos it seems that the make up makes your eyes look puffy…I think it is the color. I agree go to a counter and get a lesson and do it yourself! you don’t need alot to look pretty. For the hair, maybe go in a day or so early to try again. Good luck!

Hi. I think your hair looks beautiful, but I’m inclined to agree with everyone about the updo. The dress is just so classic and you have an opportunity to show your pretty neck and shoulders. As far as the make-up goes, I am a beauty Consultant for Chanel and I think that with your coloring I would recommend going with some very neutral browns, golds, or apricots. Specifically I’m thinking of 2 palettes that we have first Spices and second variations. They are eye shadow quads. With your eye color, I would think that a more tawny palette would bring out the honey color in your brown eyes. I highly recommend making an appointment at one of the beauty counters in your local department stores for a consultation.

Before making the appointment walk around a check out the beauty consultants and find one with make-up that you like and ask them if you can make an appointment with them for a later date so they can teach you how to do your own make-up for the day. Be prepared to buy at least 3 items because that is the courteous thing to do. That way you can get the make-up you need and practice before the event and get really good at doing it yourself. Then you can customize the look.

Best of luck!!

Miss Onion:

Have you tried asking in the Vermont Knot boards? That’s how I’ve gotten recommendations for local vendors — from my local Knot message board. I went to graduate school in Vermont, but I don’t know anyone still there or I would ask for a recommendation!

By the way, I think the Heigl hair would just look so amazing with your dress!

Ms. Onion, a great website to get advice from is makeupalley.com. They have a variety of boards (skincare, makeup, and wedding!) and I know that the ladies there would love to help. If you post those pics, they’ll give you all sorts of great advice about colours and makeup.

If you want pictures, I’d advice you to flip through a bunch of fashion/beauty/bridal magazines and tear out pictures of looks you like. If you’re not a magazine junkie like me, your local library might have a bunch of magazines that you can browse through and photocopy looks that you like. Fwiw, I agree with another poster that a palette of peaches, browns, bronzes and golds would look really natural and flattering on you. Also, I would do a bit more on the lip (maybe a deeper colour or a gloss over the lipstick), as the current colour doesn’t do much to highlight your lips. Good luck!

I don’t think the makeup suits you. You are so naturally pretty in the pictures you posted on this site. If you are at a complete loss, then I would start practicing doing it yourself. This can be fun, and is pretty easy. There are tons of videos on YouTube of people teaching how to apply makeup. If you can’t go up for another trial, I would definitely do that.

I agree with RGML who says different hair would go better with the dress, but I think it depends on you. I think that with a dress like that, the trial hair looks very innocent. If you wanted more sass, then I would go for an updo.

btw, I am in love with your dress!

ooooh I love the Katherine Heigl inspiration photo! That will look stunning.

I understand your frusteration. I’m getting married 5 hours away and I have had 2 make up trials and 3 hair trial because I just wasn’t confident in the stylists. Finally I found the right ones- but I had the same problems. I don’t wear a lot of makeup regularly or do much to my long straight hair and everything that they did didn’t look authentic on me.

I say if possible- go with a different stylist. I know it is hard. But that person didn’t do you justice. You are beautiful with great skin (that I completely envy) and someone should be able to make you look like a better version of yourself- not like you were playing dress up in your mom’s makeup. I know it is really frusterating- good luck!

I am not going to be mean about the make-up. I just think you need to find a different artist, b/c the one you went to can not give you the look you need.

The hair is pretty, but I too think you need something more fun and 40s.

I like the link to the Katherine Heigl picture - I think a style like that would look good with your dress.
I’m not a fan of pictures of me with my hair pulled back either, but they should be able to give you some volume on the top of your head with some kind of updo.

I know your frustration too! We live in central NJ but are getting married in Rochester NY (~330 miles away). I was able to squeeze in a practice hair session last time we were in town Memorial Day weekend… but I’m not decided yet on which style to go with! We practiced a couple… I wish I had time to see it again, but we won’t be up there until the week of the wedding.

I agree with what other people said too - You look very pretty in your pictures without a lot of make up. Maybe you can just do it yourself? Some kind of foundation/primer so you’re not shiny for pictures, then just some simple eye shadow/mascara/lip color.

I’m not a big makeup person either, so I’m just doing it myself.

I would go with a slightly more structured hair look and a less pink eye make-up.

Hedy Lamarr has an idea here: http://www.2neatmagazines.com/covers/1941cover/1941-Oct-11.jpg
height at the crown with some fullness without fussiness around the shoulders. It’s 40s without screaming it. And echoes the veil.

If you want something more done, I would go more up and fixed like Kate Hepburn here: http://img.timeinc.net/Life/lifebooks/hepburn/images/cover_big.jpg
Again, with the volume at the crown, but this has more done waves, more of a set.

Make-up wise, I would play up your eyes (gorgeous) more while softening the lips - like Vivien Leigh did here: http://www.gonemovies.com/WWW/Drama/Drama/GoneScarlettTraan.jpg
She’s got a slight hint of pearl pink under the brow, but for the most part it appears to be shades of gray, green and brown with black eyeliner - without being the high drama black wet-liner at the lash line.

I do adore Heigl’s hair (she’s in my look book too) but I was suggesting some ways to get a more done look and maintain the down. I do thing your hair looks pretty in the pictures, but I don’t think it meshes with the style of your very pretty dress.

The stylist may be able to do it, but I think it depends on how much confidence you have, and how comfortable you feel - is it better to have someone you’ve worked with before but need to correct, or is it better to go somewhere completely new?

I don’t wear any makeup in my regular life and I visited three makeup artists before I found somene who could make me look gorgeous but still like me. In the process, I figured out a few things that I think might help:

It’s vital to find the right foundation. I found a mousse foundation from Elizabeth Arden that is the *perfect* color for me. If you find one with the right color and texture it really does look like you have nothing on, just that your skin is even and perfect.

If you’re worried about too much on the eyes (I hate eyeshadow on me), false lashes are a great way to punch up the eyes without looking like you’ve caked on the makeup. They look really nice, not Tammy Faye at all.

I think pink looks lousy on me, too, so instead of blush the makeup artist I picked used a bronzer, just on the apples of my cheeks. It looks great and really natural.

It’s definitely worth visiting a few different makeup counters and trying things they suggest. Try Lord & Taylor on Fifth Ave: they are wonderfully not busy (I have no idea how they make money at that store, it’s always empty) so you can get advice without feeling rushed.

Love the Katharine Heigl pic. I think you would look gorgeous!! :)

I second the poster that recommended at least trying to do your makeup once on your own, just to see. I bought the makeup book another poster recommended above (I think I posted about it here, too, long ago) and it really helped. I did my own and don’t regret it a bit, esp. because, like you, I don’t wear a lot of makeup normally and my skin doesn’t really need a lot of coverage anyway. But, if you try and you’re not comfortable with the task on the wedding day, definitely try some different makeup artists and looks.

And I’d take your fiance up on his offer. Heehee.
