Last Days In Paris

July 16th, 2007 @ 9:27 am by Mrs. Bell Pepper

Part I
Part II

It was hard to find a large cup of joe in Paris. I’m a coffee nut and I love to consume large amounts of coffee, so I think I ordered 3-4 cups of cafe au lait every morning.

z99428801
Nutella chocolate and banana crepes! These are more of the authentic type of crepes you’ll see in Paris.

The following day after visiting the Louvre, we checked out the Musee D’Orsay, which features a lot of the impressionism paintings from Monet, Matisse, and Van Gogh.

z994284
We trekked by foot over to the museum after breakfast….

z99428401
You can tell from this view the museum used to be a railway train station.
z994282

z994281
One of my favorite Renoir paintings

z99428402
The size of these paintings are ginormous compared to the ones I’ve seen in the US!

z994297
A view of the other end of the museum.

Lunchtime! We decided to check out a quaint restaurant next to the Seine River called Restaurant Le Voltaire.

z99428802

Dining in France was nice because you are able to check out the menus before stepping into the restaurants! It was great for anyone who is a finnicky eater such as myself.

z99428803
The french really love citrus flavored drinks; here’s a pretty design for a grapefruit beverage.

z99428201
A classic meal there for lunch - a baguette with ham and swiss cheese. It looks simple but it’s so good.

z99428202
The french version of a hamburger, a lower carbohydrate version without the kaiser bun.

Finally, Mr. BP allowed me to do a little shopping in Paris. We first checked out Galleria Lafayette which was located in the opera house district.
z994287
The Galleria is one large department store which has about 8-10 floors of shopping. The architecture of the department store is so gorgeous.

z99428203

I even checked out the bridal salon at the Galleria. It looks like the most popular designer here is Cymbeline.
z994286

I actually didn’t do a lot of shopping Paris because the prices were so high, how can you work and survive in Paris?

z99428804

There are many street florists and they create such exotic bouquets. This one kind of reminds me of my bridal bouquet with the celosia, lotus pods, roses and calla lillies.

z99428204
Such beautiful varieties of flowers..

z99428403
It says it’s a patisserie but it’s actually a women’s clothing boutique. It’s still a very cute design for a store.

z99428205

One of my favorite sweet shops in Paris. They had all of these tasty marshmallows with a variety of fruit flavors such as mango, watermelon, strawberry, and they even green tea, yum!

z99428404
We travelled back to the Louvre and found some interesting landscaping designs nearby.

Our last day in Paris was spent mostly checking out local shopping boutiques and restaurants in the area. We also got a chance to sample a lot of the local musical talent of Paris. On the first day of summer there’s a festival called La Fete De La Musique. We were anticipating a bunch of locals playing violins and musical instruments like street musicians…

z994285

Then we saw an older guy dancing near the train station, we caught a video of him dancing:

z99428101

Walking further down the streets of St. Germain, we discovered more unusual local talent. Notice the tourist in the blue shirt on the right, he joined in to play mini-cymbals with this musical group.

We noticed a lot of bands setting up their sound systems; looks like this music festival is a serious deal! A lot of local bands who wanted to be featured had their opportunity to be heard that day.

z99428405
A deafening roar: two guys screaming at the top of their lungs with no lyrics in mind.

z99428206
We snacked on savory crepes as we checked out the bands.

z994283
A classic band playing instrument that don’t require amplifiers! The clarinet player was so talented!

z99428406
The streets became so crowded, we couldn’t even walk down some of the tiny alleys!

z99428501

z99428502
This was by far the coolest band, they looked as though they just got off work with their business gear.

z99428301

z99428407

z99428302
The streets were so filled with people that locals couldn’t drive back home. Just look at the traffic!

z99428408
This was a very funny sight - a man who was filming his friend as they were walking down the streets of Paris. The guy with the camera was commenting while his hunchback friend was just minding his own business.

z99428303
Some musicians were featured inside cafes such as the Cafe Brasserie.

Approaching closer to our hotel, we discovered a musician/comedian. Heh, his humor was definitely more impressive than his musical talent.
z99428304

z99428503

z99428305

z99428504
I took the rest of the photos around 22:00, surprisingly the sun was just setting around this time and the city was still so lively, there was still so much music in the air.

Looking back at our honeymoon, I really wish we had more time to spend in Paris. There’s just so much to see and the locals were so kind and helpful. We’re thinking about travelling back to Europe next summer, possibly Spain or Portugal. Any suggestions where we should travel next? If anyone has any questions about our experience in Paris, feel free to ask me anything.  :)

Mmmm — your post makes me want to go back to Paris! I didn’t get a chance to check out the Musee d’Orsay so it’s definitely on my list for next time. I had no idea it used to be a train station!

It looks like you guys really had a wonderful time :)

I ADORED Lisboa! It could be San Francisco’s European sister! Portugal is what I imagined most European countries were like before my first European travels when I discovered that the vast majority of the continent isn’t that different than America. If you do make it to Lisboa, you absolutely must go to Sintra. It’s ‘Sleeping Beauty’ meets ‘Lord of the Rings’ …out of this world.

Seeing those pictures make me want to go back to Paris so badly! I loved the flowers that you can get at the local market. They are so pretty and fresh. We’re thinking of taking a minimoon before our “real” honeymoon. I might have to go back to Paris. What did you find was the best exchange rate? Did you use your ATM, go to a post office?

Portugal is GORGEOUS - definitely go there. And yes, definitely make time for Sintra as well as, if you can, driving down to the Algarve and spending a few days touring/sunbathing.

Miss Snow Pea,

I exchanged about $150 in the US in case we needed any emergency money, and then we pretty much used the ATM and our credit card in Paris.

Erin,

We are seriously thinking about going to Portugal next summer, any recommendations for a hotel or places to visit and dine? We were also thinking about Barcelona or perhaps Venice. Iceland anyone? :)

I echo what Robyn said about Lisbon and Sintra. Lisbon is the best that the Iberian peninsula has to offer, without the tourist mumbo-jumbo of Barcelona (and much of Madrid). Sintra is stunning- the whole town in a World Heritage Site. Lisbon is cheaper than Barcelona, the food is to die for, you actually feel as though people live there, as opposed to just visit and spend tourist money, and it’s very vibrant. It’s not immaculate the way Paris is, but it’s WONDERFUL! Having lived in Europe the past 3 years and travelled to most of the major European cities, Lisbon is near the top of my list! Glad you loved Paris so much- what’s not to like?! ;-)

I’m so tempted to buy tickets for Lisbon now, too bad it’s too early to book them for our summer vacation! What did you guys do about transportation? Paris was nice because we didn’t need a rental car, what about Lisbon?

Mrs Bell Pepper- definitely no rental car needed! Lisbon is very hilly, but there is a decent metro system. If you are in the main city center though, you’ll probably find that the metro isn’t the most convenient way to get around– it’s a great city to walk! There are trams all over as well, which are fun to use to get around, especially in the older districts where some of the original old-fashioned trams still run through the winding streets!. The trains to get out of the city (to places like Sintra) were clean, efficient, not expensive and on-time, at least when I took them.

I was just happy to see the newly dictionary inducted word “ginormous” used. :)

Mrs. Bee,

I retouched a few photos to bring out more of the red, green, and yellow tones. The city was very colorful so there wasn’t a whole lot of retouching done to the photos.
