Beehive

July 17th, 2007 @ 4:20 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. Ana would like recommendations for a spanish bridal song.
  2. Herbert has some questions about RSVP cards and invitations; you can read his story here.
  3. SKK wants to know if anyone has had problems with Macy’s registry online?  She also has registries and Williams & Sonoma and Pottery Barn, but when she “unhides” the Macy’s registry the links to her other two registries disappear.  Any advice?

To add your question to Beehive, please leave a comment below.  Since many questions have already been answered previously (particularly regarding etiquette and gift ideas), please use the Google search box at the top of the page to see if you can’t find an answer there first. Also, you can check past Beehives here.  Thanks!

SKK - I had a lot of problems with my Macy’s registry - enough that we actually decided to not have theirs at all and stuck with WS, Crate and Barrel, and Bed Bath and Beyond. I’d call the Macy’s you registered at directley and see if they can’t help you.

Herbert - tri-fold is fine - whatever YOU want is fine. Traditionally trifold means what it sounds like, three folds, but recently has come to be synonymous with a bi fold - as you were describing. Ask how many panels you will have and you will know what you are getting. Many tri-folds are also called a “roll-fold” where the paper folds over, say 1/4 of the way, then again, then again…hence rolling. The difficulty is there are many ways this could work; gatefold (opens like a door), barrel fold (one flap on top of another), roll fold (as above), accordion fold (like a fan you used to make in school - each fold goes the opposite way of the one before), etc. I know you are worried but don’t. Whatever happens will be nice and probably different than what people have seen before. It is perfectly acceptable, if not great to ask a lot of questions - but, when it comes down to it be zen, let the minor irritations go. The big picture is that the wedding is about a life-long relationship, the little picture is RSVPs and stickers. Don’t worry - it will be great.

SKK - depending on where you are registered with Macy’s makes a huge difference. In Chicago the original Macy’s stink with registry BUT the ones that used to be Marshall Fields are awesome - beyond unbelievable…so if you can try going that route…

Herbert - I think the tri-fold would be fine. We had RSVP postcards and everyone liked them. The envelope is completely up to you and your FI. If you both want an envelope, then get one.

SKK - We have Macy’s registry, Im not sure what your problem is though. I had a bad experience with the woman who set us up with our registry, she was totally unavailable and was unwilling to help me over the phone. She only wanted me to come in to meet with her, and only in the evening, which was not convenient for me. I had more help from calling the 1800 number.

I also find a lot of products seem to be in store, but not online. Macy’s is our least bought-off registry (the other 2 we have are LNT & Target). Which is too bad because I like their Registry Star Rewards program!

Is everyone using inner and outer envelopes? I decided to only use one envelope and I’m not sure how to let certain single guests know that they CAN bring a guest with them (just fonr the people who are bringing a guest whose name I don’t already know).

does anyone know of cute, cheap lingerie show invitations? I’m on a time crunch and a small budget, otherwise I would DIY.

herbert, i actually really like the trifold idea. it’s not strange at all. it’s self-containing and unique. and a postcard is just as nice and even more economical (lower cost of postage). but if you really like the formality of an envelope, that’s fine too. it won’t cost you more postage than the tri-fold, but you’ll have to spend more on an extra piece of stationery. i find that my fiance has certain things in his head as to how a wedding and the items are “supposed” to be. so if you have it in your head that you have to have an RSVP envelope, that’s fine. but if it’s not in an envelope, it’s perfectly wonderful as well and not strange at all. in fact, the trend these days is to find unique things and people appreciate them.

davis2b, i really liked how miss emerald put her guests names on top of her invitation packet. maybe you can do something similar, so that the first thing that the invitee sees is “their name & guest”.

here’s her link: http://www.weddingbee.com/2007/07/05/done-gone-adios/

I’ll clarify a little: currently our Macy’s registry is “hidden,” which means no one can see it, but when I “unhide” the registry, the links to our existing WS and PB registries disappear off of our WeddingChannel website. It’s really strange and I was hoping that someone had experienced the same problem and could give some advice!

SKK, ohh, it’s from your weddingchannel website. umm, i really didn’t like those automatic registry links, even from our weddingtracker.com website. it might work better if you just add those links manually, separate from the automatic feature.

Ana–what kind of bridal song are you looking for? First dance? Ceremony? If you can be more specific, I would be happy to help!

Ana - same Q as Sarita.

For a dance, “Hero” by Enrique Iglesias is romantic… and something even non-Spanish speakers would recognize immediately.

Question to the group: Have you had any problems deciding what the fathers should wear? The groom and groomsmen will be wearing tuxes, but our wedding is semi formal so none of the guests will. My dad doesn’t really want to wear a tux: Would it be appropriate for fathers to wear suits, or should they wear tuxes as well? What did you do for your weddings?

SKK - I had the same problem. Everytime I updated our macy’s registry, the other registries would disappear. Weddingchannel had some problems with the updating, for some reason, but it would fix itself if I just left it for a few hours. Ultimately, I tried not to mess with the macy’s registry unless I had to, and just let it be. On the occasion when I did need to update, I just knew that the other registries would be unavailable for anywhere from 6-12 hours. But the problem eventually fixed itself and all registries would appear.

does anyone know of a printer that does custom thermography? by custom, i mean “i design it, give you an image file, you print it”. i’m looking into custom letterpress, but if it’s out of my pricerange, i’d still like something textured.

Question for the bee:

Has anyone done or heard of having a ice cream sundae buffet at their wedding and have any insight on it? I think it sounds like such a fun idea and I know it would be a big hit with the kids. I don’t believe my caterer currently provides this, but I’m wondering if either I can request it or if there is a place that would do it.
