Outsourcing My DIY

July 18th, 2007 @ 4:14 pm by Mrs. Gummi Bear

I already admitted it. I’m entirely unable to do anything crafty unless it is at a 3rd grade level and doesn’t involve any objects I could accidently poke my eye out with.

So when we decided not to have chairs with seats for the ceremony and go for long, low benches, I needed to decide whether or not I was up to the task of sewing cushions. I could, of course, rent them, but then I’d have plain fabric, and being insane, I wanted cutesty tootsy fabric. I have an army of seamstresses as friends, but they are either also planning weddings or just as insane as I am, so I’d feel bad asking them to help me with my lame project.

In the end, I called my broken mother. I call her broken as she’s recovering from injuring her achille’s tendon and has been milking it for all it’s worth, hobbling and moaning with a smile on her face, knowing we’ll be extra nice as long as she’s “suffering”. She injured it jump-roping at a church picnic, which by itself is funny, but my dad’s response was “I guess you don’t know how much you weigh!” I love my parents. My mother and my grandmother are both fully capable seamstresses, so I drove the long trek to their house and brought my materials. Neither of them are currently really working, and my grandmother who’s usual duty it is to take care of my cousins, is taking a break from it and has free time.

Should I feel bad I’m using my family as slave labor?
Nah, it’s only 100 pillows and it’s not like whiny-mcwhinerson has anything better to do. I’m joking… mostly, at least.

Besides, look at all these cute fabrics I’ve amassed!! I have to use them somehow. The bird fabric on the left is what I’m using for the seat cushions.

Does anyone have ideas of easy things to do with this fabric? I’m thinking of lining the picnic baskets, and if we run out of things to decorate the tables with, making runners.

Those fabrics are so cute! No don’t feel bad about using family, they are family afterall. It’d probably be nice to acknowledge them in the wedding (maybe in the program?) that they did make the cushions.

Might be fun to have lounge pants made for the wedding party. That was my first sewing project in high school, and I must have had eight pairs.

Love, love the fabrics and tape! Especially the one on the left and bottom right. I agree that mom and grandma are there for us to use and abuse. :p Seriously though, aren’t Korean mothers unhappy unless they feel they are *absolutely needed* for everything? Sometimes I feel guilty and I know I’m definitely spoiled knowing my mom wants to do everything to make my life easier. I bet your mom will be thrilled to contribute to your wedding. :)

lil’k and ally: the bird ones are from shinzi katoh. the fabric comes in 1m x 1m squares from japan, the same for the linen tape. the top two are etsuko furuya and the bottom three are heather bailey freshcut. If you want fabric from japan, let me know and I’ll email you.

my mom did have the surgery! but it was a while ago, she’s just enjoying the attention now. :)

2inkos: haha, actually, my parents haven’t tried to do anything at all! My mom keeps saying she doesn’t feel like she has a say, but when I ask, she just keeps repeating she has no say. I think she doesn’t want to help and doesn’t have an opinion, but like to complain just the same. :)

This seems like way too much work for me and my family, ha! I assume it’s a short ceremony? Anyway, hard benches keep people awake, no?

Lovely fabric! And if your family is happy to help, definitely use them. If you have more fabric, how about making some sunshades? I don’t know where your ceremony’s going to be. Another idea–one of my favorite parts of my ceremony was the chuppah I had made. I’m not Jewish, but my husband is, and he wanted a Jewish ceremony, so I read up on it and loved the symbolism of the chuppah. Among other things, it represents the new home that the bride and groom are creating, and many couples use their chuppah as a wall hanging after the ceremony in their new home. Ours was made out of a tablecloth that I had embroidered by a professional who specializes in Arts and Crafts motifs. It’s going to be our special occasion tablecloth in future, for holidays, etc. You might want to create one of your own.

Don’t know how much fabric you have but this wedding featured on Brooklyn Bride used fabric in a very cool way. Might be cool in your outdoor wedding. Also it’s minimal DIY :-p

Miss Gummi Bear I love your blogs. I find them quirky and cute in just the right way! I love your profile picture as you look like a girl right out of an anime! I love your fabric choices and would love to talk to you about where you get them and how I can get my hands on some. I have recently decided (against my better judgement) to try making some creatures and was looking for preety fabric to decorate them with but have no idea where to look for fabric! I would really appreciate the help! You can email me if you want at enchantingdragon@gmail.com. Thanks!
