Mrs. Radish's Picture
Mrs. Radish, Chicago/Syracuse Age and Occupation: 27, Executive Assistant/Journalism Student/Musician Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Anthropologist/Musician Engagement Date: December 20, 2005 Wedding Date: August 18, 2007 Blogging Since: June 26, 2007 Venue: The Wellington House in Fayetteville, NY About Me: Mr. Radish and I are both from upstate New York, so we are planning a wedding in Syracuse from about 700 miles away. When I’m not obsessing about our wedding I play the cello in my band (which Mr. Radish is in too), read as much as I can, sleep even more, travel whenever possible, and try to find time to have fun with my friends. I’m also working on finishing up my journalism degree with a concentration in environmental reporting and I’m the VP of my campus Amnesty International chapter… so I’m a pretty busy bee.
About Mrs. Radish

While we were in Syracuse, NY (where our wedding is going to be) doing a bunch of wedding-related things last week, we scheduled an engagement photo session with our fabulous photographer, Tim Forbes. He is based in Ontario, but he was shooting a wedding in Rochester, NY that Saturday and he was able to squeeze us in the night before.

So now I will share with you some of the fruits of our rather interesting photo session (see the end of this entry for elaboration). Overall, I’m very happy with the results and now I’m even more excited about the wedding pictures! I must point out that I’m a terrible subject to photograph. I always clam up in front of the camera and make a stupid face or have my eyes half closed. The only things about these pics that I’m less than thrilled about are my own fault. Like my hair is total freaking mess. You would think that I could’ve invested in some hairspray… ugh! And I couldn’t remember which side of my grill was my “good side,” and my bad side is AWFUL - especially in high resolution. :( I also had some major bags under my eyes (which I took the liberty of photoshopping out) and my big Irish ears are sticking out all over the place. Mr. Radish, on the other hand, is looking pretty dapper in most of these shots. If we ever have kids, let’s hope they inherit his photogenes.

Okay, so what makes these engagement photos a little bit odd is that they were all taken in a graveyard. Or, at least I would assume that is odd but for all I know people do it all the time.

You see, our photographer Tim is Canadian, and therefore he is not too familiar with the Syracuse area. He asked me if I minded finding a location for the shoot, but I’m not actually from Syracuse either and I couldn’t think of anything good off the top of my head. I looked around online and asked for some recommendations on the knot and such. I had a hard time finding anything that wasn’t a rose garden (and no offense if you like that sort of thing… it’s just not our gig) or some boring, run-of-the mill kind of place. Eventually, I came across the Oakwood Cemetery, which is right next to the Syracuse University campus. It looked really cool from the pictures I found online, and it is not hard to get to from the highway. I know it sounds very weird and morbid, but there are a lot of beautiful old buildings on the periphery of the cemetery that don’t have dead people in them… just some pretty old architecture. From what I’m told, it is a very popular spot for local wedding photographers. Seriously! Here are some of the pictures that I had found that led me to think this was a good idea.

However, being the slackish little radishes that we are, we never actually went to the cemetery beforehand to scout out the exact location of these particular buildings/spots. We just got there right on time for our pictures and had Tim meet us at the main entrance. Well… guess what? This damn cemetery was HUGE and we never found the right spot. Our shoot was scheduled for 8pm, so we didn’t have a lot of daylight to waste and after a bit of running around looking for the buildings, Tim decided we better just find whatever spots we could and get to it. He wanted to take advantage of the sunlight while he still could.

So, in the end, we totally ended up having our engagement pictures taken in the actual cemetery, surrounded by headstones and mausoleums… and dead people, of course. Luckily, we didn’t run into any zombie trouble and Tim did a really awesome job of somehow concealing the fact that we were surrounded by rotting corpses throughout the whole shoot. We pretty much felt like morons about our blooper. I just hope the photographer wasn’t totally annoyed by our flakiness. He was actually a really good sport about it but I’m sure he thinks we are total weirdos. I’m not sure that we could prove him wrong.

Anyway, I hope this will mean any kind of bad juju for us. ;)

Wow, your photographer has a very interesting style. I like it! It’s different…not typical engagement-looking photos, but different in a good way. =) They look like cool Urban Outfitters ads.

you shouldn’t be so hard on yourself! You look natural and very lovely in these photos. The both of you make an “handsome” couple…what a creepy phrase huh? But really, you both look great!!! I love those photos! You’ll be a smashingly beautiful bride!

I really love your pictures. Exactly what I would want too, style-wise. We have a historic cemetery here in Buffalo as well, I would really like to take pictures there for the old historic feel of it all, and they would be on purpose too…. :)

I think you look gorgeous, and so what if your hair was a little messy, you were outside, it all fits!

you know, if you didn’t say anything i wouldn’t have ever known it was a cemetary. these are great shots nonetheless. i’m sure your photog enjoyed shooting in a slightly unconventional setting so no worries.

I think you look great, and like that your hair looks natural - these photos show you two as a real couple, not posing for a formal event. And you man is quite handsome, especially in that solo photo!

really? these were taken at a cemetry? most are close ups of you two so the location isn’t that important anyway? they turned out nice! no, no bad juju for the radishes! now your title makes total sense. ;)

Actually I think the cemetary is a really cool location for a photo shoot if it doesn’t creep YOU out, and you look very at ease in the photos so all is good! It’s unconventional but I think that makes the photos better. Cemetaries are usually very beautiful places. Also - your hair looks really good in these photos. Yes, it’s a little messy, but in that messy-on-purpose way that looks real and windblown and gives you good energy. Seriously, really awesome pics :)

I think they’re so beautiful, in a cemetary or not. I loved it even more so after you mentioned it was in a cemetary. Also, you look very pretty. I love your hair actually. Your hair looks very soft and romantic, which you can’t achieve with loads of hairspray. Beautiful!

Don’t sell yourself so short - these are great shots and a lot of the reason is why is that you both look incredible.

Crazy woman! These shots are wonderful and you look absolutely lovely in them! I love the green tinted one on the steps! So cool! And, as others have said, I never would have guessed that those were taken in a cemetary if you hadn’t have said so.

You look cute, both of you! I don’t really understand the aesthetic of the photo that leaves your heads out of the frame, though.

Thanks for all the compliments everyone! You are all very kind.

I forgot to mention in my post that I like the way I look in all the picutures i posted… it’s the ones I didn’t post that I don’t like. Maybe I’ll post the “bad” ones at some point so you can see what I’m talking about.

Hooray for good photographers knowing what they’re doing! I love his sense of color and finding small details around you that completely hide the fact that it’s a cemetary! Miss Radish, your post was hilarious! I always appreciate a good sense of humor around one’s faux pa’s, and from the looks of it, it wasn’t a faux pa after all, but a fabulous shoot with a lot of memories.

Btw, this is why couples do engagement photo sessions, so that they can feel more comfortable around the camera and the man BEHIND the camera….hopefully, your wedding day will be filled with so much laughter and joy, you’ll forget a camera (or several) is even in the vicinity!
