Snackable Centerpieces

July 21st, 2007 @ 7:48 pm by Mrs. Lollipop

I really, really like fresh flowers, but we didn’t have money in the budget to pay for baskets of flowers for 20+ tables or the time to assemble them. My fiance liked the idea of using fresh fruit in the arrangements, so we experimented and found something that we both liked that would cost about $16 per table.

The Bird of Paradise blossoms will be about $1.75 each from our florist with a bulk purchase, and there will probably be three in each final arrangement. The vase in the center is a beer glass from Ikea (6 for $6.99), and the glass is filled with $1 of Jabo marbles purchased in bulk from ebay. The bowl is a $3 plastic punch bowl from Target*, and it is filled with a $6 crate of clementine oranges that will be purchased from a local fruit distributor. I managed to get clementines on our wedding date last year from the grocery store, so I am crossing my fingers that they will be available from the wholesale shops again.

Miss Lollipop, I love it! We are doing the same thing, with apples. Since our wedding is in New England, and we wanted to incorporate something colorful, but not go to waste, we’re doing apples as centerpieces/favors, and passing out caramels and popsicle sticks for people to make their own candy apples at home. I LOVE LOVE your flowers in the middle of the clementines, though - it looks bold yet coordinated and very yummy!

Please don’t do the apple slices - they’ll turn brown. And trry save-on-crafts.com for bulk cheap vases - we got some there, cheap bulk river rocks, and flowers from a wholesaler (you have to pick the right ones - no Birds of paradise, more like galdiolus) for 12 table for $70. You don’t have to do fruit to save money.

t- Oh, it’s not apple slices, it’s going to be bowls of apples. Thanks for the headsup, though - brown slices would be gross. We’re having cocktails and the luncheon in different places, so we’re having local flowers from a farm in jars for the cocktails, and then the bowls of apples at the restaurant for the luncheon.

t - if, by chance you were talking about miss lollipop’s picture when you mentioned the apple slices, the apple slices on her table are actually a placemat, I think.

You don’t have to do fruit to save money, but why not be resourceful? I think it’s a fabulous idea to do something that’s fun AND functional. I wish I would have thought my centerpieces through more, but as it were I had to make a snap decision to save money (after-Christmas sale)

I say go for it. Everything looks wonderful together and will be a neat mix of color and texture :)

I love the idea of your centerpieces—plus, if you keep the vases to take home, you will have a complete set of beer glasses later :)

we did something similar to this for our wedding (home-grown flowers floating in lotus-shaped bowls and white orchids in tall blue blown glasses) for a grand total of $10 per centerpiece. We ended up with a full set of bowls and drinking glasses afterwards, much better than throwing away a bunch of flowers and vases. what is key is that we had friends and family assigned to keep an eye on the centerpieces and pick up the vases and glasses when the reception ended.

While you are spending, you might want to invest in a few glass mixing bowls (for your future baking endeavors) at Ikea to substitute in for the plastic bowls, and maybe keep the cute clementine boxes to give away the oranges at the end of the night.

Neat. If you run into trouble getting clementines, could use limes, lemons, small green apples?

i love that idea, it looks really trendy and tropical! although i’m not too crazy about the target punch bowl. michael’s/ac moore has shallow dishes for about the same cost that are glass and might look more elegant.

we’re using bamboo and just a few flowers b/c we wanted to avoid the high cost of blooms as well.
