You Can Run, But You Can’t Hide

July 23rd, 2007 @ 3:58 pm by Mrs. Licorice

Or is that I need a good run? Perhaps three times a week for at least 30 minutes?

My wedding gown arrived at Bridals by Lori in Atlanta mid-April, but I was too stressed and panicked at school to even care. Now that I’ve been home sweet home for a while, I’ve focused on all things wedding related, my dress included. “It’s time to start my dress fittings!” I thought to myself. A slight feeling of excitement was soon eclipsed by an overwhelming dread; my clothes have been feeling a lot tighter lately. It was time for the moment of truth: I needed to weigh myself. I stepped on the scale and was highly disturbed by the numbers glaring back at me. I have gained 13 lbs since Spring Break. OH MY GOD.

How did this happen? Sure, I quit the swim team, exercised only once on my own, and kept a regular diet of fast food on top of the late nights spent working on school projects… I don’t even want to see my dress, let alone try the darn thing on.

My goal is to lose 18 lbs. Think I can do it?

For anyone trying to lose weight, tone up, etc, there are slew of websites devoted to helping such as the SELF Challenge, Brides Magazine Vow to Wow, and Body by Glamour. I signed up for all of them. One can never have enough motivation.

Here’s me in the sample size of my dress. It was a little too big then but would probably be on the small side now. Where did I put that darn treadmill?

You’re dress is amazing!! May I ask the designer if you wouldn’t mind? That is the exact dress I’ve been seeing in Atlanta bridal ads, I’m in love with it, it’s my dream dress, but I could never find the designer of it. You look so gorgeous!

My current favorite is sparkpeople.com. It’s free, and has a lot of little incentives for the competitive types.

this is off topicish, but your veil is beautiful.

I was going to say sparkpeople.com too! I think you can lose 18 pounds in 2 months but you’ll have to be quite disciplined. You’ll probably have to work out and/or do cardio almost every day and stick to a strict diet plan with maybe 1500 calories a day, but I reckon if you do that you could lose 2 pounds a week.

If you, like me, have the problem of talking yourself out of going to the gym because you’re tired, you might want to consider hiring a personal trainer just for 2 months because when you have an appointment, you’re not going to bail on the gym. Plus, they tend to get really good results, fast because they push you harder than you would even think to push yourself!

The same thing happened to me! It sucks to go on a diet, so I didn’t bother. I’m just trying to exercise.

I’m doing Take Shape for Life (you get it through an independent consultant- it’s Medifast food) and have lost almost 7 lbs since last Sunday (8days). It has helped me to fit better in my gown and my goal is to have them take it in at this point (and to possibly not have to use the Spanx sucker inners that I bought).
Good luck to you regardless of the method you choose to lose the weight. Just make sure it’s a healthy one.

I like sparkpeople as well. You are beautiful and you have plenty of time. My best advice would be try to be healthy, but don’t get focused on a number too much - you want to look good on your wedding day, not drawn and exhausted from trying to lose too much weight too quickly.

Your dress is GORGEOUS!

Beautiful dress! I just had to mention I found the chatboard I read on sparkpeople really depressing… a lot of self hatred. It’s probably jost me but I wanted to give my POV. My strategy has been doing exercise tapes at home first thing in the morning, before I get sidetracked.

I lost 16 pounds in 6 weeks. Basically I ran 5 times a week for a half hour, did other cardio for 15 minutes, and weight training for 10 minutes. Be disciplined about counting calories (1200-1300/day), and it will work!!!

You look fab though now and so does your dress.

Seriously, either South Beach or (don’t laugh) Suzanne Somer’s Somersizing plan. It’s a little rough at first, but she has great recipes. I’ve seen family members lose weight v. quickly on this eating plan!

I was going to the gym a lot in the spring, but then my work hours changed when my grad school semester ended — and I didn’t have time to drive to the gym in the morning before work, so i just started jogging in the morning. I’ve been doing it about 4 times a week, for 20-25 minutes or so, then walking the dog on top of that when I get home from work. I miss the weights-part of the gym though, With 3 weeks to go til the wedding (just under) I’m going to have to squeeze in some weekend trips and do more with my 5lb weights at home to try to do some last minute arm-toning.
