How To Add Silhouettes to Lanterns

July 24th, 2007 @ 8:27 am by Mrs. Lollipop

As a follow-up to this entry, I wanted to add instructions for stenciling figures onto lanterns. Today’s figure came courtesy of our Maid of Honor, who did a superhero pose using a chair in her kitchen.

You will need:

Printer
1 Sheet of Cardstock
1 Craft knife with a sharp blade
Double sided tape
1 Lantern (I use the 12 inch size)
1 Pencil
1 Permanent marker
1 Silhouette figure using the instructions from the above mentioned entry

Step 1:
Print your Silhouette figure onto the sheet of cardstock.

Step 2:
Cut the figure out using the craft knife. Scissors can be substituted for the knife, but they won’t capture as much detail or cut as cleanly.

Step 3:
Place a few pieces of double sided tape on the back of your cutout. To reduce stickiness and the possibility of messing up your lantern, stick the exposed part of the tape to your palm a few times.

Step 4:
Stick the cutout to your lantern and trace around it with a pencil.

Step 5:
Trace the pencil line with a marker for a clean edge.

Step 6:
Color the drawing in.

Repeat steps 4-6 until the lantern is satisfactorily decorated.

It took me about an hour and 30 minutes per lantern. Most of that time was dedicated to coloring the figures, so I delegated much of it to friends who were interested in helping.

Your lanterns look fantastic, I never would have guessed that it was all hand-coloring. Nice work, and I admire your patience!

Do you know if it’s not as crisp looking if you use the “stencil” (the cardstock with the shape cut out) and spray paint or something like that? Or even tape down the stencil and color freely?

Question, Where exactly did you get your paper lanterns? I have been looking and looking…I need a cluster of blue and white ones…

Becky–

The stencil would need to be totally sealed to the lantern in order for the spray paint to leave a clean line. With so many ridges and crannies it would be hard to use the same stencil over and over.

Jasanna–
You’ll be able to find all of the colors you need right here.
