The Out-of-Towners

July 24th, 2007 @ 9:29 am by Mrs. Corn

Mr. Corn and I headed to our nation’s capital for the weekend. We both grew up in the Northeast and took part in the requisite 8th grade field trips and family road trips. We both have also visited the area on numerous occasions for business in the past six years, so this time we were looking to find the off-the-beaten-path attractions that we most likely hadn’t seen before.

Of course, the Jefferson Memorial isn’t THAT far off the beaten path, but the shot came out nice, so I thought I would share…

I really have no idea how or why Mr. Corn dreamed up this trip. Out of the blue, a couple of months ago, he asked me if I was interested in going to DC for a weekend in the summer and I, never one to look a weekend-getaway-gift-horse in the mouth, eagerly said ‘yes’. We travel together well and knew it would be nice to have a weekend to be a tourist without any required 400 mile drives or family visitations. This was also our last trip together not as husband and wife. I don’t know why that means something to me, but for some reason it does.

The view from our room on the 10th floor of the JW Marriott downtown. (Mr. Corn travels A. LOT. so we use his points for everything. I highly recommend this hotel if you are ever in the area…it is perfectly located steps from the White House and in between the Mall [where all the Museums are] and restaurants along E Street).

Mr. Corn waiting for his waffles at grease-pit-of-a-diner we found across the street from the Ford Theater. Note, this place has no name that we could find, other than a sign outside that said ‘Waffles’ but it had the yummiest, albeit slightly soggy, waffles and was perfect for the low-key breakfast we were aiming to have.

The best kept secret in DC? There is a terrace dining room on the top floor of the Hotel Washington on the corner of 15th St and E St, that has a spectacular view of the White House…and the food is pretty good too!

Mr. Corn with a friend of ours that we met for lunch (the Washington Monument can be seen over his right shoulder).

The view of the White House from the Hotel Washington’s Terrace Restaurant.

So do you have any plans to get-away at all in the months before your weddings? If you could go anywhere and/or do anything for a quick weekend get-away in this hectic time of planning, where/what would you do?

We are lucky to be attending FI’s best friend’s wedding in Oahu just 1.5 months shy of our own wedding…it will be fun, relaxing, and our last get away as fiances :)

Hey, I’m getting married in the building with the dome on it (3rd picture from the top)! The JW Marriott is very convenient, but the DC Marriotts are not so helpful when trying to set-up room blocks (they basically told me they weren’t going to give me any discount because they didn’t need my business).

By the way, the Terrace Restaurant in the Hotel Washington is not really a “secret.” It’s a big attraction for tourists. There’s nothing wrong with that, of course, and the views are really nice.

I would give anythiing for just one child-less night out with my fiance…we don’t get that…and when we do we come home to our son…just one night off would be amazing!

Oooo…bummer about the room blocks, Lydia. I guess on the one hand it makes sense, business wise for them not to offer a room block if they don’t need to get rooms off of their hands (we used to have this issue when booking corporate events)…but it is still frustrating, I am sure.

Thanks for clarifying on The Terrace Restaurant. I guess it was just the best kept secret from Mr Corn and I…but that makes sense since we have only been there with 8th grade field trips, family trips for a weekend and work…none of which have ever considered the place a ‘to do’ considering the short time allotments.

I stayed at that Marriott in DC during the New Year that just passed and it was wonderful and really close to everything. We are going to Chicago next week for Lalapolooza. She has to work but its always great to have a free trip.

Aw, I’m originally from the DC area and the Jefferson Memorial is my favorite. Even though we have been wedding-planning for the last 10 months and are getting married in 3, we hadn’t had an official proposal, so last weekend when we were in DC, my fiance ‘proposed’ on the steps of the Jefferson Memorial. :-)

I hate to tell you this, but you didn’t stumble upon the best kept secret in DC — EVERYBODY knows about the restaurant on top of the Hotel Washington. I think I heard about it my first weekend living in DC. Whenever anyone wants to come visit, they all request to go there…. fabulous, yes.. secret, no!
Did you go to the FDR Memorial? It is the best by far! It’s actually where my fiance proposed. :)

Hey hey hey…I admitted (see previous comment) that the restaurant is the best kept secret in DC…from apparently only Mr Corn and I. I can, however, promise you if you visit on an eighth grade class trip, the Hotel Washington is not on your itinerary, and therefore when you finally DO hear about it, it seems like the best kept secret in DC. Especially if you get there at noon on a gorgeous Saturday and there is no line and the person with you from DC says ‘huh…I had no idea this was even here’. :)

We did walk through the FDR monument on the way between the Jefferson and the Lincoln and it was very very striking. Maybe I should coin THAT the best kept secret in DC since we had no idea it existed until we happened upon it. ;)

FDR during the Cherry Blossom Festival is a little slice of heaven.

The FDR Memorial is, by far, my favorite Memorial in D.C. The new WWII Memorial is a very close second though.

Your pictures make me miss D.C. I lived there for seven years and met my fiance there. *Le Sigh*

We now live in Boston. With all the wedding expenses for our October fete coming due, traveling beforehand is pretty much out of the question. We’re planning little day trips to the White Mountains, Lake Winnipesaukee (where we’ll be married), Martha’s Vineyard, and coastal Maine. Yipee!

Miss Corn, if it’s any consolation, I lived here in DC for a year and a half before *I* ever made it to the Terrace….

And AMK, congrats on your “official” proposal!!! We’re in a similar boat — been planning for 3 months, but the ring was finally finished 2 weeks ago and no “proposal” yet. I think The Boy is psyching himself out wanting to do something grand and drawing a blank…. But he’d better hurry ’cause the wedding’s half planned and I want to blog about it! ;)

And as for travel … PARIS PARIS PARIS! A surprise engagement gift for him (assuming it ever happens, ha ha) this Thanksgiving.

Yay for DC! I probably drove right past you at least 5 times this weekend and didn’t even know it.

Also if it’s any consolation, I’ve been in the DC area my whole life and have never done the Hotel Washington terrace. Next time you’re in town you’ll have to pack a picnic for Gravelly Point — that’s a real best-kept secret!

I heart DC! Thanks for sharing. :-)

We’re doing a bunch of mini-moons before our actual honeymoon in September (we got married July 7th). Couple trips to Seattle, one to a lake, etc.–all to go to OTHER weddings, but we’re splurging and staying in suites and attending baseball games, etc.
