About Mrs. Radish

The Taming Of The ‘Do

July 24th, 2007 @ 1:41 pm by Mrs. Radish

Initially, I made a hair appointment at a very fancy/trendy (meaning expensive) Syracuse salon for my wedding-day coiffure. The earliest appointment that I could get was at 9am. I took it, but it made me a little nervous because the salon is a good 15 minute drive from my hotel, not accounting for any traffic and/or parking delays, and our ceremony is at 11:30 am. I would still need to get dressed and get my make up on after the hair appointment, so it was kind of cutting it close. Then I talked to my grandmother and she mentioned that her hairdresser, Jennifer, offered to come out to Syracuse the morning of the wedding to do my grandma’s hair. My grandma is totally one of those old ladies that goes to the beauty parlor every week to get her hair “set,” whatever that means, and she has been going to this particular hairdresser for the last 13 years.

I thought to myself “hmm… Jennifer did my hair for my high school prom and it was cute, maybe she could just do my hair at the hotel, too!” I had my gramms talk to her about and she said that would be no problem since she was already coming out to the hotel to do my grandma’s hair. Yay! So she agreed to come to my room around 8 - 8:30 am. This makes everything so much easier for me now. Not to mention, she is also much cheaper than the original salon I booked… by a long-shot!

Here is a picture of me from my prom for your viewing pleasure. Don’t laugh! We all had our “weird” stages, right? Anyway, I like my hair though and I think Jen did a good job on it back then. She is really good at doing exactly what you tell her to do, so as long as I have a good idea of what I want she will be able to nail it. In these pictures, it’s quite a bit bigger on top than I would wear it now (and it’s dyed black) but the overall idea is still kind of the same; part-up, part-down with some ringlet curls. Sorry that the quality of these pics is so bad. My scanner is crappy.

Okay — so I had my first, and possibly only, hair trial with Jennifer when I was home a couple of weeks ago. This first picture was taken in the salon right after she did it. The curls are a little bit tighter than I want them and I forgot to have her take any pictures from the front or the side, but I like the look of it overall.

The rest of these pictures were taken about 8-9 hours later. She didn’t put any product or hairspray in my hair since it was just the trial and I was outside for a while so it got blown around in the wind quite a bit. It held up pretty well, though, and I like the curls a lot more when they are a little more relaxed liked this.

I don’t want to have quite as much hair pulled up on the sides for the actual wedding day.

It’s a little messy in this next picture and there isn’t a whole lot happening in the front. I told her I want to have a few ringlets or something hanging down and maybe a little more volume around the top.

This isn’t exactly what I want for my real bridal hair, but I think she has the right idea. I might try to squeeze in one more trial with her the week before the wedding if I can. She wouldn’t let me pay her anything for this appointment, though, so I will make sure she takes my money if she does another trial.

So what do you ladies (and possibly gents) think of this style? How are you planning on wearing your hair?

I think that’s awesome. Now you will be able to remember that it was your grandmother’s hair dresser that did your hair for your wedding; I’m sure that the trendy hair salon experience would be completely forgettable!

Miss Radish, you are gorgeous!

I really like your hair in the later photos. So soft and pretty and natural.

I like it! Are you wearing anything in/on your hair (veil, headpiece, etc)?

I definitely like the later pictures. Maybe you can ask her relax the curl a bit?

I prefer the later pictures also, the curls need to be a bit looser. The only concern I have is in the second-to-last pic there, your hair at the back looks quite flat and limp. You might want to have her use more of your hair’s length in the knot part to add a bit more volume to it, and then the ends just wouldn’t hang down so low.

Miss Radish-

Did you see the pics of my wedding hair? There are a couple pics of it going up later today or tomorrow (whenever I get to formatting them)… I think my hair came out very similar to what you are looking for.

i like that it stood up really well even without product.

you just need a lil more height up front i think. it looks lovely otherwise!

I like the relaxed, loose curls. I agree that you should have a little more going on in the front/top.

I really want to wear my hair in loose curls pinned up for the ceremony (w/veil) and wear it half up/half down for the reception (without the veil).

If you don’t want too much going on in the front/top, could try a far-to-one-side part, or maybe some volume/height at the crown?

Wow I am just distracted by how perfect your makeup is in the pictures! You look like Winona Ryder. And trust me I don’t think your weird stage is anywhere near as embarassing as others.. (..okay, mine).

You DO look like Winona Ryder! I’m all in favor of long hair worn down. Looks beautiful.

It is nice. It has a lot of potential. Have you considered cutting some layers in your hair. This way when you style your hair, you will have some curls cascading down. This will add a beautiful soft romantic affect to your hair. And you don’t have to lose any length. It will look lovely.
