Beehive

July 25th, 2007 @ 4:20 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. m&r is looking for lighting companies in the New York area.  She loves the look of color splashed on the walls of the reception hall, but she doesn’t have an unimaginable budget for it.  Any ideas?
  2. Karen would like to know; when calling a venue to book a rehearsal dinner, what are some of the “must ask” questions she should have prepared?
  3. Andrea is considering using table wedding cameras, but she’d like to know what others’ experiences with them have been.  Is it worth it?  And other than the Knot, can anyone recommend a place to find them discounted?

To add your question to Beehive, please leave a comment below.  Since many questions have already been answered previously (particularly regarding etiquette and gift ideas), please use the Google search box at the top of the page to see if you can’t find an answer there first. Also, you can check past Beehives here.  Thanks!

Andrea —

My sister used disposable table cameras at her wedding, and the vast majority of the pictures were not any good. I don’t think she bothered putting any of them in her album or anything.

Plus, nowdays, everyone has their own cell phone camera or digital camera so you could just make a Flickr photo pool or something like that for everyone to upload their digital pictures to instead.

Andrea: Would skip it. People emailed us tons of photos they took on their own digital cameras.

When my sister gets married, we are planning to set up a laptop or two (my mom works with computers so we have spares) with card-readers as a “dump station” for people to download their pictures before they leave - as good as table cameras and a lot cheaper! It might end up in a backlog of people downloading their pictures, so we’ll probably also have a site for them to go to too, afterwards - maybe include business card sized reminders for them to take care of it when they download their pictures.
Disposable cameras are difficult for any indoor or dark space anyway, because you have to get so close to the subject to get a decent picture. Also, I read something in a wedding magazine or book about companies that reuse the housings and don’t seal them properly, thereby allowing light in and ruining the film.

Costco used to sell discounted cameras, I don’t know if they do anymore.

New Question: I’m looking for a website that has or a kind person to share their templates for Bridesmaid Newsletters, OOT Bag Welcome Notes, and Schedules.

Ellie - What website will you use for guests to upload their photos? I was trying to figure out a way to do this too.

New question - is it ok to fill in guests name(s) on an RSVP card before mailing it to them with the invite?

Andrea, I’m joining in the chorus of skip its. I hear from everyone who’s tried them that only a tiny proportion (on the order of 10%) are usable photos. I also hear the cameras that have wedding themed cartons on them are usually expired brand name disposables repackaged. Between lighting conditions and people using cameras that they’re unfamiliar with and just plain crappy cameras, it’s just not worth it.

Any recommendations for places to get hair and make-up done in Tucson, AZ? I am especially interested in artists and stylists willing to go to our site. Thanks!

New question for the new brides. I am thinking about doing the Polaroid guestbook for my November wedding but I’ve heard and experienced polaroid pictures fading. Did any of you have or experienced this problem? Also, where would be the best place to purchase a polaroid camera?

Table cameras were largely ignored the time that I saw them. People can’t be bothered to pick them up and press the button– so lazy! I would say skip it.

MissChris: I still have polaroids from the early 80’s that don’t show signs of fading yet!

m&r: I attended a wedding out in Crest Hallow Country club over the July 4th weekend and the DJ company did a fantastic job on the lighting of the venue. If you are on are PC computer you should be execute the link. I don’t know how much they cost but the lightingh created a nice atmosphere. They also did something with their light stands as well.

Hello! I am interested in finding an affordable event photographer for my friend’s backyard wedding in Dallas. Does anyone have ideas? It should be someone with a good eye for candids; maybe someone trying to get their start in the industry? Thanks!

Andrea- Oriental Trading company sells wedding cameras at an excellent price. I think that are a great idea for capturing candid shots- not everyone thinks to bring a camera to a wedding. Sometimes the pictures on these can also be your best and favorites as they are not “posed” photos! Good Luck!!

how weird. i commented earlier today for m&r about the lights but its not posted.

my cousin went to “lightwaves” a company in nyc for lights for her wedding and she loved it. she worked with a guy name tim and his email is tim@lightwavesconcept.com

she said he was a great person to work with and knows what hes talking about. i actually plan to use him too for my wedding in 2008. good luck!

Q: so we had our details meeting with the catering consultant yesterday and were underwhelmed. service had been great until the meeting yesterday. the consultant answered her phone during the meeting, and had a guy there that we don’t even think worked there, but she didn’t explain why he was there. she also automatically chose the layout of the ballroom, but never asked us if we were doing guestbook, favors, etc. if we never mentioned it i don’t think it would have come up. we felt very uncomfortable and embarrassed b/c i had brought samples of how we wanted things to look, yet she didn’t seem to care about the details, yet it’s called OUR DETAILS MEETING. apparently they have someone different actually running the event, whom we don’t even meet until the wedding day (we are going to insist that we meet them beforehand for peace of mind).

this makes me very stressed out because i thought the whole reason they have a planner there is so i don’t have to worry about things getting done. i am very disappointed, especially since we are paying for the 200 person wedding ourselves and spent a lot of time finishing up samples of the details to try and make it easier on the day-of planner (whom apparently doesn’t even show up to these meetings). the description of the catering consultant on their website explains that she is supposed to make sure all the details are included, but she only wrote half of them down and kept saying anything else? anything else? like she wanted to get out of there. but we even finished 20 minutes early!!!

we LOVE the venue but even this meeting dampened our view of the whole experience. i was even crying afterwards in the car (although i did that the day before too with the pastor, i think i’m cracking up). my FI is going to call the manager to give feedback b/c i think i will get upset if i try to call.

have you had a similar experience at your details meeting(s), and did you feel the same anxiety as i do?
