Beehive

July 26th, 2007 @ 4:34 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. jessi wants to know; does her FI’s stepfather wear a tux?  His real father has since passed away, and his mom remarried.
  2. 2007 Bride is looking for a website or kind person to share templates for bridesmaid newsletters, OOT bag welcome notes, and schedules.
  3. jen is wondering whether it’s ok to fill in guests’ names on an RSVP card before mailing them with the invitation?
  4. Jessica would like recommendations for hair stylists/makeup artists in Tucson.
  5. bettina would like advice on how to ask guests to upload their photos to a site; read her ideas here.
  6. Miss Chris is considering making a Polaroid guestbook, but she’s heard about (and seen) Polaroids fading.  Any brides experience the same problem?  Also, can anyone advise on the best place to purchase a Polaroid camera?
  7. Mary is looking for an affordable event photographer for a backyard wedding in Dallas; she’d like someone with a good eye for candids, and maybe someone getting their start in the industry.  Any suggestions?
  8. Jen’s meeting with her venue coordinator went very poorly; she would like some advice on how to handle it.  You can read her story here.
  9. Alisa’s hair place accidentally overbooked leaving 12 people stranded.  Can anyone recommend a hair stylist (or 2 or 3 considering the size) to travel to Tafton, PA (outside the Poconos).  She’s from Northern NJ and that’s about 40 minutes away.

Miss. Chris: They make a spray, available at scrapbooking stores, to make any paper or pictures acid free. I haven’t used it, but know people who have, and it is wonderful…that might be the answer for your pictures.

Jen: i was going to fill out the names on our rsvp cards. We have a limited number of people who can attend and that way guests will now who is really invited and not add extra guests in. Everyone i have mentioned it to thinks it’s a good idea.

Bettina - so far, our guests have been doing it without being asked. We returned from the honeymoon to find the wedding party had been emailing each other links to their flikr and picasa accounts, and other family and friends sent links directly to us, which we then posted on our website. There are only three people with $$$ cameras, $$$ lenses, and mad skillz who haven’t shared anything with us, and I believe tonight’s the night they start getting nagging emails.

jen, i’m definitely pre-printing my guests’ names on their rsvp cards. it’s the best way to convey the message that they are not allowed to bring a guest or anyone else i don’t know to the wedding. that combined with the “(#) seats have been reserved for you” will keep all of the randoms from showing up.

jessi: I would definitely outfit the stepfather in a tux. He is obviously not a replacement for his father, but is his mother’s spouse. She will be dressed to the nines and it would be nice for possible family photographs that he was dressed in a tux.

Jessi-traditional etiquette says that the stepfather only has to be dressed in a tux IF he is being treated as one of the fathers. That gives you an out if he doesn’t really want to have him in that role for whatever reason. Peggy Post,Miss Manners etc. all agree on that. If your FI wants him too, that’s fine-but he doesn’t have to-he could just be dressed as a guest.

Why are photographers so expensive? I would like to find a great photo-journalistic type photographer who provides the rights to all the photos and will document the ceremony and part of the reception (~8 hours) in Northeast Ohio for under $2000. Am I insane?

Mary - I live in Austin and come to Dallas pretty frequently as my bff lives there. I might be able to arrange coming up for your wedding if you’re interested! I’ve been taking pics for many years and just got a sweet new camera. You can check out some of my pics on Flickr at this link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/talibaba/ There are some wedding photos that I took under the Friends collection. These are non-photoshopped, and I actually spend quite a bit of time touching up photos these days, but don’t have any examples of weddings that I’ve done. If you’re interested in discussing, contact me through there! Best of luck!

My photographer put together proofs of my wedding album pages without asking my husband and I for any input whatsoever about which pictures we wanted to include or omit. I didn’t even know that they were working on them until they sent them to us for our approval. Is this normal?

Maverika - I’m looking for the same thing. I have a few great names of photo-j photographers that I was impressed with that are right around $2000 or less for 8 hours of work (with photo rights included). Check out these websites and I believe that at least one if not both offer discounts for off-season or Friday/Sunday weddings.

Chris from Detroit,

RE: #6

Fading polariods are part of the aesthetic. Let them fade a little.

If you’re really worried about them fading you can put them in a light-tight box. Usually if you can avoid light on the photos you’ll be able to avoid fading.

Something like a book box or case would work well. You can make your own too. Just search around.
