Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend

July 26th, 2007 @ 12:52 pm by Mrs. Licorice

For the past two days, I’ve been walking around feeling half-naked even while fully clothed. There was a prong out of place on my engagement ring, so I took it to the jeweler to be fixed. It’s amazing how attached I’ve become to my ring. Without the little hoop of metal and diamonds, I was missing an appendage. Does anybody else ever feel that way?

I finally got it back today, though, and it looks so much better.

While I’m on the subject of diamonds and rings, my mind wanders back to a past Martha Stewart Weddings cover from Winter 2006:

I was newly engaged when I noticed it and immediately became excited about wedding planning. It just might be my favorite cover since, but diamonds aren’t everything. There are a mulitude of gorgeous non-diamond engagement ring options. These usually incorporate precious stones such as sapphires and emeralds.

Left picture from Brides British Edition, right picture from Martha Stewart Weddings.

The picture from Martha Stewart is actually of colored diamonds, but you get the idea. :)

Whatever option you and your fiance choose, just make sure the stone is safely secured. You definitely don’t want to lose one of those suckers!

I’m gonna look soooo nit-picky by pointing this out, but sapphires, rubies, and emeralds are actually precious stones. Semi-precious stones are like aquamarine, garnet, amethyst, topaz, etc.

I *love* the idea of e-rings without diamonds, though! A friend of mine has the most gorgeous ring–an emerald-cut sapphire! So pretty :-)

I have an antique, old miners cut diamond.

i actually don’t even wear my e-ring everyday - i just forget. naturally that annoys my FI to no end since pre-engagement, i kept hinting - bigger is better! :)

That reminds me…I need to get my ring cleaned! It belonged to his grandmother and it is beautiful, but all those facets need tlc!

I had to look up the history of gemstones, and it’s pretty interesting! :) from wikipedia:

Traditionally, common gemstones were classified into precious stones (cardinal gems) and semi-precious stones. The former category was largely determined by a history of ecclesiastical, devotional or ceremonial use and rarity. Only five types of gemstones were considered precious: diamond, ruby, sapphire, emerald, and amethyst. After the discoveries of bulk Amethyst in Brazil in the 19th century, Amethyst lost its place amongst the list of precious stones.

about a month after i got mine the stone & setting popped off in my hand. right in my hand, out of nowhere.

i cried. this was more than broken jewelry this was my *engagement ring!* and it was in pieces.

anyhow i was out of town and took it to a jeweler to have it fixed and they did *such* a beautiful job, it looked better than it did when i first got it. and that is no lie, they set it wrong the first time! which is why it broke…

i had to wait for it to be shipped back to me and for those two weeks i wore a cheap little silverish band from Claire’s. i missed my ring so much, i needed something there or i would have lost my mind. my naked finger always made me wonder how the little broken ring was doing. i really *missed* it.

engagement rings are not jewelry, they’re a promise of eternal love. (you begin to believe this more and more when you have to leave it with strangers. they have no idea of the value)

anyhow now that i have it back its too big.
;)

I missed mine badly when I had it re-coated with Rhodium, and cleaned.

My aunt mailed me the picture with all the different shapes of diamonds from that Martha Stewart Magazine before I was even engaged! She included some note about leaving it around to hint to my then-boyfriend. But that’s not me, so I looked at it then got rid of it so the boyfriend wouldn’t see!

I really like colored stone engagement rings. Mine is an aquamarine. This may sound petty, but I don’t like small diamonds–or small stones, even–especially on my big hands. I wouldn’t want a big stone of lousy quality, either. And since I didn’t want my fiance (husband, now) to spend the kind of money that sort of diamond cost, I looked at colored stones. Emeralds are too delicate to be engagement rings, rubies are too rare, so it was down to sapphires or aquamarines. Blue is my favorite color anyway, and I’ve always wanted a nice aquamarine. When my fiance found me–we got engaged first, then looked for a ring–a gorgeous 1940s vintage aquamarine set in platinum with diamond accents, that was it. I’ve never seen a ring like it before or since, and I had to have it. When the deliveryman rang the doorbell, I actually slid down the stairs, I was so excited. :)

Oops…I guess I should’ve done my research before posting! Thanks for clearing that up!

And yes, insurance is very important. Although it can never cover the emotional attachment to the original ring, at least you won’t loose out on all the money spent!

i’ve always dreamt of my wedding band having alternating diamonds and sapphires, and got the best of both worlds on my e-ring. got the rock, and the band of diamonds and sapphires in a vintage design setting. i’ve always loved the color blue and love the idea of a different stone on my ring.

Because without a ring, it’s not a promise, right? This irks me to no end.

i felt i was missing a part of me too when i had to get my e-ring resized. i have the tiffany ribbon ring! i absolutely love it! the design of the ring actually makes the diamond look bigger than it actually is. :) it’s beautiful!
