About Beehive

Beehive

July 27th, 2007 @ 4:20 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. Maverika is looking for a great photojournalistic photographer in the Northeast Ohio area, who will shoot the ceremony/part of the reception and provide all rights to the photos for under $2000.  Is she insane?
  2. Kendra’s photographer put proofs of her wedding album pages together without asking Kendra and her husband which pictures they wanted to include or omit.  She didn’t even know they were working on them until they sent it for approval.  Is this normal?

To add your question to Beehive, please leave a comment below.  Since many questions have already been answered previously (particularly regarding etiquette and gift ideas), please use the Google search box at the top of the page to see if you can’t find an answer there first. Also, you can check past Beehives here.  Thanks!

Maverika, I know a photog in Fort Wayne, Indiana that you can check out. Dan Scheerer. He was an assistant for 3 1/2 years and is doing solo work now. A lot of his clients aren’t big on photojournalistic work so he has to balance what he presents his clients.

He shot my FSILs wedding in Fort Wayne and I was pretty impressed with the slide show he put together for the reception of the ceremony.

Kendra, my understanding is that yes, it’s normal, but that you should be able to instruct them to add/change/re-arrange/re-order/remove photos to your specifications so it shouldn’t be a problem.

Kendra - My photographer does this. Its so that the album is produced in a timely manner. A lot of pictures that you’ll receive are like 15 shots of the bouquet - the photographer picks the best shot for you and then you approve it. My best friend didn’t get her album until 2 years later because she never took the time to sit down and sort through thousands of photos. Since its sent for your approval - you can change any aspect of it.

Kendra - same process with my photographer. However, in addition to the shots he picked out, we also asked that he give us ALL his shots on CD so that we can go through them later to see if there were any hidden gems that he didn’t catch.

I don’t know if it is just me, but recently weddingbee has been really slow. Has some feature been added which is causing this? Could some features (maybe “read more right here”) maybe be wheeled back to compensate?

Maverika, as a Cleveland bride, there are two photographers that come to mind that meet your qualifications. One is Ken Blaze (www.kenblaze.com)- we have booked him for my wedding as his work is outstanding and he is incredibly personable. If the packages don’t quite suit your needs, he is very flexible about tailoring them to your needs- both price and coverage.

The other whom I have heard good things about is Rob Rife- (www.rifephoto.com).

Kendra - From the photogs I talked to, only 1 (out of like 15!) said they put together albums without your input. Most of the ones I met with have their clients select pictures they definitely want included (and ones they definitely don’t want too), then work from there. They end up adding more as needed (esp. of detail shots), but they want to make sure to use the ones that are most important to you. Then a lot of them still have a review session to give you the opportunity for you to make any more changes. It still sounds like you have the opportunity to edit your album since they sent it for your approval, so take advantage!

Maverika - I just left a comment on the site where you originally posted on - but it turns out that its the same as what Meg said. I think we’re going to go with Ken, but we would have considered Rob except he’s not available for our date.

Good luck!

To save money we’re not getting an album professionally done by the photographer. Instead we’re getting hi-res negatives on CD so that we can make our own. Any suggestions on which websites we can use to create our own albums?? Along with our parent albums - let’s just say they may be picky so I’d like them to be as professional looking as possible.

Hybrid Photography

Kendra-this is normal, and is a method a lot of photographers are starting to use, however, your photog should have communicated the procedure to you beforehand instead of surprising you with it. Most of the people who use this method will allow you to change any of the pictures if you want. A lot of the time we put together albums like this in a way that we think best tells the story of the day, but of course want you to be happy with the album photo choices.

Hope that helps clarify. :)

I am curious if anyone knows about the price range of Paloma Blanca and/or Anne Barge gowns. I’m interested in a few, but I don’t want to even think about them, let alone try them on, if they are not in my budget… can’t get my hopes up!

Thanks ladies!

Kendra - yeah, most photographers are going to a predesign process….the thing is, many couples will take months (yes, MONTHS) to get back to a photographer with a list of photos to be included…photographers also tend to have an eye both for the best pictures and the best layouts. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t speak up and say something if you don’t like a particular picture, want another one included, etc. My understanding is that most photographers who do this have it as a starting point. It’s typically bigger than what most couples order, but it gives you a point to start and then say your budget, what you do and don’t like. Just be careful because some will only allow you to make changes a certain number of times (to keep the process from dragging out - you can make a ton of changes at once, but not 5 or 6 times…if that makes sense)

I’ve got a big issue for the hive.

My FMIL has been itching to send out correspondance to her family and friends that are attending the wedding. I specifically told her not to send a formal “wedding packet,” i.e. a welcome letter, directions, appropriate attire, and other information. I found out recently that she went behind my back and did just that. When I called her to discuss, she immediately went hysterical and hung up on me. We’ve had a conflict-free relationship up until this point, but I’m beyond furious and maintain that I deserve an apology. I’ve planned and paid for 100% of this wedding, and I frankly don’t think the mother of the groom has any right to send out a welcome packet! Anyone else been in the same boat? Any ideas on how to go forward?

Small addendum: not only did she send out an official welcome packet against my wishes, she listed hosts for all events except did not recognize me for hosting the wedding. Additionally, she included incorrect information on attire and when to show up for the wedding! So now a big chunk of my guest list is under the impression that FMIL is hosting the weekend (incorrect), and also is going to show up at the wrong times wearing the wrong things!

Question for the hive:
For those who have had a photobooth at your wedding, did you find that it only added to the guests’ enjoyment of your wedding or did it take away at all from the reception? Did you have the booth inside the reception space (ie., main ballroom where dinner and dancing was)? And, lastly, has anyone used Party Booths (www.partybooths.com) for their rental?

go amie - we’ve had a big increase in traffic lately, and it may be that spam bots are attacking weddingbee much more aggressively due to the increase.

right now it seems to be a-ok but we’ll definitely be on the lookout for other reasons the site may be slowing down because we haven’t installed anything new. :)

Question for hive:
I was browsing knottie bios and came across this pic:
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/137/373611108_23ede1f7e8.jpg
It captured the bouquet beautifully but I love the dress! Can anyone id it? Or perhaps know who the pic belongs to? I’ve been looking specifically for this style and absolutely love the delicate halter neckline but can’t find something similar to this one. Please help.
Thanks!

Question fo the hive: What does everyone do with the vases leftover from the floral arrangements after the wedding? I’m having a destination wedding so I’m obviously not going to take them home with me!

new question: For those of you who chose photography packages where you get all the digital pictures plus the rights to them, did you get any sort of official document giving you the rights? I’ve heard that sometimes printing companies (snapfish etc) will give you trouble if the photos are professional, so I was just wondering I should be getting some sort of proof from the photographer in case I run into this.

For those of you that did DIY invites, please recommend a printer and programs that you used. If you used a printing company, was the process difficult? Any info would be so helpful. Thanks so much!

I got a Paloma Blanca, Kelly, and it was about $1800. It was two season old, though, and I’ve been told the Paloma price range is typically $1500 - $2500.

Annie - I don’t know who designed this dress, but there’s a Jenny Yoo that I’ve been coveting that has the same delicate halter. Check out her site!

I am in the same boat with Mrs. Bee regarding my Anne Barge. It was about $5000 when all was said and done….and that was earlier this year for a dress purchased in Jan 2006. I also had part of it altered to my taste with Anne Barge personally overseeing what I wanted changed. No charge for that! :-)

Lindsey, I did our invites myself using an Epson printer which I bought at Staple for less than $100. The key is to get a printer where the paper can go in, and come out flat w/o bending. This way you can use thicker paper. I bought all our paper/folders/envelopes at Paper Presentation in Manhattan.
