Ceremony Planning — Part 1

July 28th, 2007 @ 6:03 pm by Mrs. Onion

On our trip to Burlington recently, we met our minister for the first time. I was nervous because we booked the church, mailed the invitations and made all our plans without having met or spoken to her! Much to my relief she was fantastic!! We brought some ideas with us and she loved them all. She encouraged us to make the ceremony as personal as we liked — music, readings, vows — whatever was “us.” She was pleased we weren’t planning a 10 minute ceremony like a couple she’d just married a week earlier. She said “I wondered why they were even here — they should have gone straight to the reception!”

Here is where we’ll stand in front of the pulpit:

Ceremony Planning -- Part 1 : wedding ceremony 011

Here’s what we’re thinking so far (in parts so it’s not too much to read at once)!

Purpose of Marriage: which the minister will read at the beginning of the service after her brief “welcome.”

Mr. Onion and Miss Onion, you have come together for many reasons. You have decided that being together will enrich your lives. You have decided that whatever challenges may lie ahead for you, they can be met more easily with your shared love for each other. You know that your joy will be enhanced because of your commitment to each other.

You are now taking into your care and keeping, the welfare and happiness of the one person, in all the world, whom you love best. You are agreeing to be a light and strength to each other. You are entering into an act of pure faith in which you give yourself to the utmost.

Marriage is more than just an acknowledgement of existing love or an expression of hope that love will last. In marriage, people exercise their uniquely human power to shape their world according to their will. Two people may come together and come to love each other by chance. But when they marry, every day thereafter they make and act on the choice to stay together and continue to love one another.

Blessing of the hands to replace the lighting of the unity candle:

“These are the hands of your best friend, young and strong and full of love for you, that are holding yours on your wedding day, as you promise to love each other today, tomorrow, and forever.

These are the hands that will work alongside yours, as together you build your future. These are the hands that will passionately love you and cherish you through the years, and with the slightest touch, will comfort you like no other.

These are the hands that will hold you when fear or grief fills your mind. These are the hands that will countless times wipe the tears from your eyes; tears of sorrow, and tears of joy. These are the hands that will tenderly hold your children.

These are the hands that will help you to hold your family as one. These are the hands that will give you strength when you need it. And lastly, these are the hands that even when wrinkled and aged, will still be reaching for yours, still giving you the same unspoken tenderness with just a touch.”

Up next: Vows and readings/poems

How did you plan your ceremony? What is/was your favorite part of your ceremony? What readings did you use? We’re still not set in stone on the readings so I’m grateful for your thoughts.

What a beautiful church!

Planning our ceremony was actually quite easy. I’ve always felt that there’s a reason for using the traditional ceremony, it links you to all the other couples who have said those same words, and have had those words said over them. We stuck to the basic Jewish ceremony, although had most of it in English for my gentile family. My mom is a regular reader at her Episcopalian church, so I asked her to read–I knew it would make her happy. And we let her choose what she wanted to read, as long as it sounded good to us (the commonly read passage from 1st Corinthians, and a piece from the Song of Songs.) And that was it. No unity candle, no reading from the Velveteen Rabbit. We were happy being a link in a long chain of couples using the Jewish wedding ceremony. We’re unique enough in the rest of our life. ;)

Very sweet. We are also considering “The Hands Blessing” because that was recited one night during our marriage retreat and made us both misty-eyed. We are still writing our ceremony. It has been a tedious, but fun task and I imagine it won’t be finished until the week of the wedding. I think the process has been a great almost academic exercise in how we view our faiths and values in this next step of our life.

Some of the possible readings in our google notebook are Fidelity by D. H. Lawrence, Regarding Wave by Gary Snyder, and I Carry Your Heart With Me by e. e. cummings.

We use the usual web sources like the great IndieBride thread and ConsciousWeddings. We also read to each other a lot and make notes in small passages from books. Ideally we are going for one Buddhist reading, one Christian reading, and room for one that agree on with no guidelines.

We’re kindred souls!!

We are also using the ‘Blessing of the Hands’ however, I’ve seen a few different versions of it, so I’m not sure which we will actually use. We also including it on our program.

And just like bunnybride, we are using E.E. Cummings ‘I carry your heart with me’. Ever since I watched the movie In Her Shoes, I have loved this poem.

There is one other reading I would like to include, “I Am Love” - the author is unknown but it is so beautiful…it starts with ‘Some say I can fly on the wnid, yet I haven’t any wings. Some have found me floating on the open sea, yet I cannot swim….’

We are hoping to keep the ceremony between 20-30 minutes. We’re working with our pastor to get all the ceremony details together.

Good luck on yours!! :)

For readings, we used “Love” by Roy Croft and the “Love is a friendship that has caught fire” passage, which I think is Ann Landers. My favorite portion of the ceremony was the song my cousin performed as a musicial interlude, “Harvest Moon” by Neil Young.
