About Mrs. Eggplant

LA, Here We Come!

July 28th, 2007 @ 5:02 pm by Mrs. Eggplant

Los Angeles is to Miss Eggplant as Vegas is to a gambling addict. It’s like a bad habit I can’t get away from. After living and working in LA for two years post-college, I have to admit that I fell prey to the nonstop nightlife and addicting shopping. I shopped like a bandit, partied like crazy, and lived to regret every minute of it!

Finally, So-Cal living got too much for my poor easily influenced self. I packed my bags and said goodbye to LA, trading my “wild” days for a responsible lifestyle, a bit of maturity, and a wonderful relationship. Coincidentally, I have a love/hate relationship with that city. And, of course, my bridesmaids planned my bachelorette as a weekend getaway in the City of Angels. smiley1045 It’s almost symbolic, really, like one last hoorah before officially closing the doors on those two crazy years of my life.

My MOH send me an email yesterday letting me know that she bought our plane tickets to LA. I was so touched!! She has been a starving student for the last two years and I did not expect her to pay for a dime’s worth of anything, so I was incredibly humbled by her generousity.

Well, this time around, my time in LA will be TAME. I want to eat well, dress up, and spend some QT with the girls… and I guess a little light shopping wouldn’t hurt. LA, Here We Come! : wedding bachelorette party san francisco Winky015 winky015

Since I haven’t been back to LA in years, do any so-cal-ers know of a swanky martini bar or hot new nightclub to visit? Restaurant recommendations are appreciated as well. I’m looking for some places where we can dress up and have some “Sex and the City” fun! (Well, without the sex, of course smiley1045)

Thanks!!

I know Lola’s in West Hollywood is a martini bar. Beware of their hard-ass drinks! Great place, though.

Nic’s is a classy martini bar in Beverly Hills. It also has a vodka freezer where you get to don fur coats and sample their different vodkas. If I remember correctly, it was $20/person to go in there.

The food is also quite good there….they have a nice selection of appetizers in the bar area and they have a separate dining area as well. I haven’t been there on a weekend, so I can’t say for sure how busy it gets, but on a Wednesday night, it was definitely packed.

Lola’s, as someone else mentioned, is definitely a great option as well. Try the pizzas and mac-n-cheese :)

Have fun. My L. A. and your L. A. experiences are totally different. I grew up there and the East Hollywood/Los Feliz area has always been a sanctuary for me. I suppose I had a number of experiences in my environment that a kid/teenager should wait to experience, but it was all good.

Have a great time and your MOH is really sweet for doing this! I live on the other side of the country right now and can’t give a good recommendation because you know how quickly a place can get played out once everyone gets hip to it.

I would suggest happy hour at Palomino’s in Westwood. It’s a little bit of a walk, but the cheapest parking garage is on Broxton and Weyburn. Happy hour (before 7pm) is great - $3 drink specials, $5 pizza, and 1/2 appetizers. Trendy setting.

If you do feel like going clubbing, you can (well, assuming it’s cool with everyone) go to a gay club. I suggest the Factory on Friday nights - they play top 40 pop, $4 martinis, and no guys to harrass you! Sign up on the guest list to get in free before 10:30pm, but it doesn’t get crackin until 11pm. Also the Abbey is a cool lounge nearby.

Or you can get manicures and martinis at Beauty Bar! Perfect with the girls. I hope you have TONS of fun!

Ivan Kane’s Forty Deuce is a fun spot, but it gets very crowded. if you’re looking for a fun lunch spot, i’d rec the Abbey in Weho- they have the most incredible BLT- bacon, lobster, and tomato and less than $10!- sandwiches and incredibly hot (albeit gay) men. the pool bar at the standard is really hit and miss these days. you’ll want to dress up for all three of those places.

if you’re looking for a decent dance club, avalon is still good but saturdays are strictly trance/house but hold after hours until 8am.

foodwise, there are *so* many great places I want to list! My gfs and I love AOC for their tapas and wine and cheese bar- you’ll need reservations well in advance. email me if you’d like more :)

I really like Dolce restaurant on Melrose. It’s the same restaurant group as Geisha House and part owned by Ashton Kutcher, that’s not why I like it, just thought I’d mention ;)
It’s fairly “LA” if that’s what you’re looking for. If you’ll be here on a Monday night (not sure if you’re doing a long weekend), all the food is half price!

I second Nic’s and The Abbey. The Abbey is a restaurant/gay bar, but it’s got great food, even better drinks, and [gay] eye candy, to boot. I believe their late night happy hour prices are pretty good, and it’s just such a fun, chill place with enough action while not getting too scene-y at the same time.

There are sooo many great eats in LA! There’s a really cute restaurant called “Taste” on Melrose which is good. Also, Porterhouse Bistro in BH has great steaks for a decent price! I also heard Dakota in the Roosevelt hotel was also very yummy!

As for clubs/bars i haven’t been to Hollywood for awhile now but i heard that J Lounge is pretty poppin. (that’s in downtown) Teddy at the Roosevelt was fun too!! You might also want to check this Trolley called the HollyTrolley. You can ride it for a buck and it takes you to all the different poppin clubs in Hollywood!!
Hope this helped.

Hi Miss Eggplant, I would not recommend J Lounge. Before I went, I, too, heard it was the current happenin’ place but I wasn’t too fond of the crowd. If you want more info about my experience, shoot me an e-mail. Boulevard 3 is actually a really nice club and roomy too (unlike most LA clubs), but it all depends on what kind of crowd you’re looking for. They’re mostly Asian, but it’s not too bad.
