Nothing To Wear!

July 31st, 2007 @ 4:20 pm by Mrs. Eggplant

Do you think if I took naked engagement pictures, it would start a wedding trend?

Our engagement session is this Friday and I have Nothing. To. Wear. smiley203 It doesn’t help that I’m immensely picky about my wardrobe already, let alone an outfit that will be forever cemented in JPEGs and passed down to my future grandkids.

“Mom, what are those funny looking shoes that grandma is wearing in her engagement pictures with grandpa?”

“They’re called UGGs, honey, and they used to be in style back then.”

“Oh. Ew. And what are those funny looking shoes that grandpa is wearing?”

“They’re called crocs, dear. And they also used to be popular back in the early 2000’s.”

crocs
(Yes, Mr. Eggplant really does wear those shoes EVERYWHERE.)

I have a “backup” outfit for this Friday’s engagement session in case I don’t find anything in the next, oh, two days or so. But I’m not totally satisfied with it. The outfit is pretty simple so I’m hoping it won’t look silly decades from now. I guess I’m not satisfied because it doesn’t totally feel like “me.”

I want to add some color to the outfit (like a yellow cardigan), but for the life of me, I can’t find a sweater that isn’t black and looks good with that dress. Any suggestions on how to spice it up?

The Limited had cute cropped yellow, blue, purple, red cardigans on sale about 2 weeks ago. It has a cute 60’s bubble look to it.

It may be a bit too out there, but I think I once saw a dress like that with yellow shoes, instead of black ones, on an Anthropologie catalog spread. Maybe that would work?

Try spicing it up with some funky or colorful jewelry…it’ll be just enough to add some fun to the pictures without (hopefully) making you embarrassed years from now. The dress is really pretty though! It’ll look great in engagement pics.

how about a red cardigan? black white and red always seem to work well together.

I was thinking the same thing…like Robin’s egg blue shoes or something punchy with a big necklace maybe..

red!

What if you did bright yellow jewelry. I did a super quick search and saw this,

@ forever 21. It may be too “cheap” looking though. Maybe you could cut the chain and string it on a blk ribbon.

I think red would look great! maybe with a red chunky necklace? or kelly green…i think that color looks great with your coloring.

you could scrap the b/w market dress and go for something else more colorful…anthropologie has a lot of classy summery dresses that would be great for an engagement session. Where are you taking your pictures at? If it’s outdoors–a more summery, less formal dress would be perfect!

Ditto the previous comment about some robin’s-egg-blue jewelry. Maybe a chunky necklace and/or cuff bracelet? Or maybe you could use a prop like a bouquet of brightly colored roses?

Or you might be able to find some ribbon to tie around your waist in the “sash” portion of the dress. If you get the right width people will never know it wasn’t part of the dress to begin with.

I agree with the chunky necklace

Cute dress but I do have to say, if you’re worried about the pictures looking dated, I’d lose he cardigan–that shape/style is more trendy than classic.

That said, your pictures will probably look a little dated no matter what. Isn’t that kind of the fun thing about looking back at them with your kids/grandkids?

I think I agree that the sweater looks too trendy too if you are worried about the pics looking dated. I think it’s because of the knitting and because it’s cropped. I like the black and red shoes from Macy’s and maybe a red sweater like everyone else said. I love the dress and it’s really pretty even though you don’t think it is you.

i think you should try wearing a yellow shawl or wrap of some sort. That way you can have some pictures with it on and you can have some pictures without it. Either way it would be really cute!

I LOVE that dress! I have been looking for something similar for my upcoming bridal shower. Did you find it in a BHWM store or online?

i love the dress with the simple black cardigan! any photographer will tell you that neutral colors with simple lines is the most versatile for a photo shoot. that way, you won’t have to worry about whether or not your sweater clashes with the orange poppies in the background if it is too loud for the roman pillar that you are leaning against. i think your outfit is perfect!

Awesome! Thanks for the suggestions everyone! :-) I think I’ll take a trip to the mall today to scope out some colorful jewelry pieces or a sweater to add a tiny splash of color.

Valerie: I got it in the store. right now all sales items are additional 50% off too!

Hmm…please don’t buy Daisy Duck yellow pumps.

I DO like the black pumps, though! Those are WAY prettier and timless than the espadrilles (which would be cute with jeans, but not with that dainty dress).

Margo says:

My photographer recommended solid colors for engagement photos - because she said that patterns date the photo much more. We were a lot more casual in our engagement pictures - I wore jeans and a dark green sweater - but do you have any solid colored dresses?
