About Mrs. Emerald

I really, really, REALLY want a group picture of everyone that attends our wedding! Maybe something like this, but I’d like to be able to see everyone a little better:

Please Stick Around For A Pic, Please : wedding photography Z102084 group pic
(pic from knottie Mrs. Julia Goolia - amazing bio by the way - love the Wedding Singer reference!)

Now has anyone done this? When is the best time, and how do you round up your guests? I was thinking of including a line in the program booklet, probably at the end of the order of the ceremony which says, “Please remain in your seats for a group picture!” What do you think? This will certainly be a test of my photographer’s skill and swiftfulness!

Just as a heads up- my friend did this at her April wedding, and we had all just sat through a 1.25 hour mass/communion, and the last thing we wanted to do was shuffle into a big group for a photo. Plus the rearranging of everyone took forever. So I might suggest doing it at your reception?

Ours happened kind of naturally right after mass. Our guests were standing around outside as they left church and the photographer just asked them to cluster closer around us and poof- there was our group shot.

i wanted one of these shots, too, but my photographer seems to think it can’t happen…*pout*

we want to do this too! Your photographer will probably have a good suggestion about organizing this. I like the program note to the effect of, “please join the bride and groom for a group photo immediately following the ceremony at the XXX” I’d include a cue about where this will be done — in the church, in front of the church, etc. Everyone will follow the lady in the white dress anyway :)

we did it right before our rose petal toss exit. photographer organized everyone by way of the dj’s microphone. then after everyone disbursed to get petals to see us off. it is a great shot! i love it!

Our photographer gave us a few options - immediately after the bouquet toss, outside after our ceremony (ours will be a short-ish ceremony,) or even right after dinner when everyone’s getting up to hit the dance floor. He said we could look at more options when we got closer to the wedding. Those shots are such great keepsakes, it’s a must-take for us. :)

We got married outside in front of Castle in the Clouds (www.castleintheclouds.org) and the photographer when up into the castle before the end of the ceremony - almost to the top and captured a fantastic photo of all of us. You can see our faces - there were 84 people there and it was such a great intimate photo. I’m going to send it with our xmas cards this year. E-mail me if you’d like me to send you a copy of that picture via e-mail.

I was at a wedding that did that, at it was in the middle of the reception — It really interrupted the party, and I generally found it to be a pain. My reception hall is trying to get me to do it since there is a balcony and they always to do group shot.

Our ceremony and reception were in opposite corners of the same backyard, so as people were milling around in that middle area during cocktail hour, it was easy-peasy to get them to clump and look up. Now that’s my coworkers’ favorite shot.

i went to a wedding and they did this after the ceremony [it was a catholic mass] while everyone was milling out front of the church. it was an easy enough shot and took about a minute. no problem.

We took one at our wedding right after the ceremony. We included a line in the program and then after the ceremony the pastor asked everyone to stand out on the front steps of the church for a group photo. I don’t think it was too much of a pain for the guests - we walked straight outside, our photographer got up on a ladder, the guests spilled out down the stairs and in front of the church, we snapped a few pictures, and then we got swarmed by guests congratulating us after the picture was over. We didn’t spend time arranging people, the photographer just told people to make sure they could see him. Out of all the group shots we took the one that I like best is the one the photographer told everyone to cheer - it captured the festive mood.

i agree that it was a bit of a pain for the guests at a friend’s wedding because they had to move from one end of the garden to the other. but when the shot happened, it was pretty cute. so you just need to weigh how much of a hassle you’re willing to have in order to have the shot. if there’s a natural balcony area and everyone will be below it anyway, that would be the best time to do it.

we did one of those photos and it was fantastic! we did our ceremony and then had people pass out champagne for a toast. once everyone had their glasses we all turned to look at the photographer. it’s a great shot of everyone with their glasses raised. why not just have your photographer take the shot after your kiss before you recess down the aisle? you could even have your officiant ask that everyone stand and look forward.

this can be a great idea, depending on how big your wedding is. my friend did it for her 80 guest wedding and it was similar to the picture you’ve posted, except the bride and groom were standing down on the floor with the other guests. plus, like you said, there is no easy way since it will be quite disruptive. one idea is to have your emcee announce at the end of the cocktail hour that everyone meet for a group photo. this would also be a good segue to dinner. make sure your photo brings a really wide angle lens, maybe even a fish eye.

A friend of mine did this, and it was perfect! The reverend announced it as soon as the ceremony comcluded. All guests walked outside, gathered in a group, and the photographer took the photo from a second story balcony close by. The photo turned out beautiful, and I think it is a great way to remember all of the guests who were there to share in your special day!

Hey, that’s me!! I’m mrs.julia.goolia—I’ve only lurked here, but a friend said a photo of mine was up. That picture was actually taken before dinner, right after our cocktail hour. Both the ceremony and reception were in the same building, so before everyone filed upstairs for dinner (and right after they were all listening to our awesome toasts in that same spot) our photographer just snapped this really quick. I love it. I want a big fat print of it to see all of our gorgeous guests smiling away. But it depends on your venue and timeline if it will work out.

Oh and one more thing: that picture has 170 guests in it, so that’s why the faces seem small. But in reality, the actual high-res proof is pretty darn good. You can see everyone pretty well.

I’m so excited that you posted this - we’re getting married on Sunday, and we’re planning to do this. Our ceremony is actually on the second floor, and it’s a loft overlooking the reception area. After the cocktail hour and just before dinner, the DJ will ask everyone to get on the dance floor and the photographer will run up to the ceremony area to take the picture.

We did this at our wedding! We did it right after the ceremony. We had our officiant (my father-in-law) make a quick announcement after our exit from the ceremony. We had a great place to do it (taken from a balcony in the cocktail lounge area). There was no problem at all.

We did it at a cousin’s wedding. @ 200 guests. It happened after cocktails. The photog assigned a few “wranglers” and he took the pic from a balcony similar to this pic. We missed a few people, but got a nice shot!
