Wine Glasses For Dummies

July 31st, 2007 @ 2:52 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

“Here’s some wine… um… in a juice glass.” How uncouth. Of course, I’m not a wine drinker. I love root beer floats and chocolate milk, and the Crate and Barrel cooler-sized glasses are perfect for them. Of course, what happens when actual wine drinkers squeeze into our little railroad-style apartment? I suppose we must have some wine glasses, since the two we have (that match our lone martini glass) aren’t exactly nice.

Since we’re not big wine drinkers we don’t know the difference from a red, white or what. According to Bed Bath & Beyond, we need 12 each of: beer mugs (which will come in handy), champagne flutes, coolers (check), double old fashioneds, highball, margarita, juice, martini, pilsner, red, white, water goblets, and shot glasses. Twelve shot glasses? Lucky for us I have my collection of naughty and tasteless shot glasses I’ve collected over the years. laughin032 As well as those items above, Crate and Barrel insists we register for brandy/cordial glasses and irish coffee mugs. Yeah. Because all of a sudden I’ll have a craving for something I’ve never had. whateva016

What’s a non-wine drinker to do? I’d love to register for water goblets, I always feel so chi-chi when I use them. Since we’re not huge wine drinkers, and most of our friends are beer people (yeah, that’s how we “roll”), do I really need 156 (thirteen types of drink cups times twelve of each) drinking implements? I don’t think so.

As we have already registered for the Crate and Barrel coolers, doubles and juice glasses, I think we’re covered in that area (and whoops, somehow registered for 3 sets of 8, Kiwi can’t count), so I just need to decide which of the alcohol glasses we need.

For those of you who registered for wine glasses and martini glasses and all that, how many did you register for? Are you wine drinkers?

Edit: I’d also like to gripe about how many choices there are for salad bowls. Seriously, three pages of options?

The best wine glasses are from Ikea, because wine glasses break and even wine snobs don’t really care as long as it looks like a wine glass. :-)

Tanya says:

Heh, the more glassware we buy, the more our cat breaks! Seriously, she has a thing for our old-fashioned glasses– or rather, for batting them sideways until they fall off the kitchen counter and shatter on the tile floor! We started with 10, and now have 2. Darn cat!

We aren’t drinkers either. We registered at BB&B for the following 14 oz Multi-purpose Goblets. We’ll serve whatever in them. Even root beer floats if we want to because they are “multi-purpose” after all. ;)http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&WRN=-1086322113&SKU=14276653

the best wine glasses are from riedel, but if you usually don’t drink wine, the glass probably won’t make that big a difference. right now we’re using spiegelau glasses which are just as good as riedel but slightly less pricey, and they’re great. we love wine. :)

you can probably just get away with 4-6 white wine glasses and 4-6 red wine glasses. and we don’t own any of those other beverage specialty items except shot glasses from ikea! ;)

Aliya says:

We registered for 12 wine glasses, but we both like wine — and more importantly, our “vision” for our home is that it be a place where we entertain often, so we want to be able to have groups over for cocktails, etc. But I agree, I think 100-odd glasses is overkill! To that end, we didn’t register for martini glasses, shot glasses, and a lot of the other specialty stuff (we’re also not martini drinkers).

Ellen says:

We registered for wine glasses (red & white sized) and champagne flutes. I think 12 of each … My FI wanted a really traditional wine glass, but I had my heart set on the more modern, flat-bottomed cylinder shape (from C&B). As a compromise, I’ve promised to find some nice crystal goblets to add to the ol’ registry. We’ll probably only do a few of those. I did add on some stemless martini glasses — (6?) we’re not big martini drinkers, but have lots of friends who are — and I thought they’d make good dessert bowls too. Oh and 6 margarita glasses ;o) I was told that people, especially your friends, love to buy glasses and barware for wedding gifties :o)

Andrea says:

I have 2 white wine 2 champagne and 2 red wine glasses already….we registered for 4 stemless glasses because I am not picky about everything matching and I like the ones I already have.

t says:

Um, I disagree. I am a wine “snob” and I do care. Maybe not at other people’s houses but we’re registered for 12 each of chardonnay, syrah, cabernet, bordeaux, merlot, pinot noir, fume blanc, and burgundy glasses (yes, thats right 96 glasses) - so I say to each his own. If you don’t drink wine then register for what YOU want - it isn’t about being right, its about being right for you.

I love the stemless wine glasses that you can get at Williams Sonoma and Crate & Barrel. I love drinking wine from them, but they also work well for a gin & tonics and Orange juice!

Elizabeth says:

Oh how I feel your frustration! We are not big wine, or alcohol, drinkers either, but felt the need to register for something. We have registered for some wine glasses, martini glasses ( sometimes a girl needs a cosmo with her friends right?!), and some margarita glasses. We felt that this would allow us to entertain when we need to, without over doing it on the registry. Side note- I’d be afraid people would worry about my “drinking habits” if I registered for the suggested 156!
Good Luck!

melissa says:

oh good lord. i’m sure they’re just telling you that because they’ll hope someone will buy it for you.

If you’re not big drinkers, I’d keep a look out for stemless wine glasses (http://tinyurl.com/33ngvq). You get the shape of the wine glass without the super breakable stem. You can put them in the dishwasher and use them for juice as well. We have two stemless white wine Riedel O tumblers for when we have wine with dinner, and I think they’re great.

There are plenty of inexpensive versions out there that I would definitely buy if I didn’t get my super awesome employee discount. :D

sally says:

Yes, a huge wine drinker. Riedel has an amazing collection that is what we went for, they even do dessert wine glasses. I love dessert wine. We chose this german brand becuase waterford wine glasses are so small. I dont drink martinit’s or shots so we left those off the registry.

13.
Abi says:

Ugh. Crate and Barrel is totally screwing you by selling that vision of crap. Who even has the cupboard space for all of those glasses?

If you think you should get some wine glasses for company, you can pick up a set at Ikea. Otherwise, register for stuff that you’ll actually use. And don’t forget to keep around a couple of those plastic cups, even after you get new stuff. You never know when little kids will come to visit.

14.
HACB says:

I agree with Ellen. People do love to buy you glasses. We recieved all of our glasses on our registries between the shower and early wedding presents from some people who weren’t coming to the wedding.

For stemware, we registered for 8 each of white wine, red wine, martini, and champagne. (We already owned some random wine glasses too.)

I also recieved 4 margarita glasses from my very awesome aunt at my bridal shower.

We already owned 3 dozen each of highball and double old-fashioned style glasses (ordered from a restaurant supply source when my husband fell in love with them) so we didn’t need any of those!

If the quantity of glasses says something about your drinking habits - we’re in trouble! :)

Pencils says:

It is nice to have wine glasses in case you have a dinner party or a holiday dinner and you want to set the table formally. That said…no one but real wine snobs care about the glass itself. Register for eight or twelve (good for breakage) relatively plain wine goblets. Unless you actually drink martinis, don’t worry about them, or get four or six in case you have people over. Beer glasses sound like a good idea for you if your friends drink beer, you can get both mugs and pilsner glasses if you like. Just keep in mind that Crate & Barrel want to sell you glassware! We didn’t register for glassware at all–we already had everyday glasses, and we’re not drinkers either, so wine glasses weren’t a priority. And, luckily, Sandals has a promotion where they give nice wine glasses to honeymooners. I hope ours arrive soon! ;)

i have a small place so I really can’t accommodate huge parties.. so i figure i’ll only need 6 wine glasses for those occasions when i have a small dinner party. and although we love drinking wine, i don’t plan on buying super expensive wine glasses because i’m also a klutz!

aoedorothee says:

i’m not quite a wine snob, but i do like all kinds of wine. i especially like wine glasses, so yes, we did register for the nice waterford crystal ones at macy’s. 12 whites, 12 reds, 12 champagne flutes. also got the all purpose goblets from c&b (i’m more likely to use these for dessert though) and regular drinking glasses from l&t. if i ever need more, i would definitely get the ikea ones. i love ikea-ware.

if you want to register for the ikea ones, i suggest signing up for http://www.bgregistry.com and you can pretty much place any item under the moon from any store under that all encompassing registry website. then you can place your rootbeer float glasses on there.

sandy says:

i would get the stemless glasses b/c they’re good for both red and white. i love wine and registered for Riedel glasses, but i also love using the stemless ones — also great if you have pets or are prone to spilling

twelvetigers says:

Don’t register for anything you won’t use, and don’t opt for really pricy glassware… because it breaks easily. That’s my opinion, I guess.

20.
Melanie says:

Ha, guess how many wine glasses we received? ZERO. Even though we registered. Guess they knew we are not really big drinkers. Anything you serve a lot of alcohol in should be perceived as pretty much disposable (if you think about it…). So I’m very happy to be inheriting some old pretty crystal wine glasses that were my grandma’s — a few mismatched but will be nice for the very RARE occassion we need something pretty for a special occasion. Me, I like something that goes in the dishwasher! If you like outdoor entertaining, can get some fun nonbreakable ones.

Tea says:

my vote is for the stemless wine glasses if you must get some. they’re good for other non-alcoholic drinks as well since it is a bit weird to drink oj from a wine glass.

js says:

When a friend of mine got married a few years ago, she registered for about 8 different sets of glasses (from C+B)- wine, martini, beer, highball, lowball, juice, you name it! I thought she was totally out of her mind! Who has the cabinet space for all that? We live in NYC, in small apartments. It’s easy to get swept away with all the registering. Stick with what you need :)

suzi says:

most people won’t be able to tell the difference between a red or white wine glass, so find one you like and go with it. (i registered for red wine glasses, water goblets and flutes)

if your juice glasses are glass, clear and plain, tell people they’re the modern stemless wine glasses. :-)

24.
Laura K says:

i don’t care as long as it doesn’t have a lip on it, ya know the rim that glass has that crystal doesn’t? otherwise I wouldn’t splurge on anything too expensive, because they do break.
and many people can tell the difference between red and white glasses, they have a different purpose.

also, i dislike the stemless. if you’re drinking chilled wine your hand warms it up, and they also get all covered with fingerprints. just my 2 cents.

thistleorchid says:

I think that registries are for your future as much as they are for what you have/neeed right now. I know that when my sister got married, they were living in a tiny place and rarely entertained. They went ahead and registered for a lot of that type of stuff that they got and now they’re all grown up, have a house, two kids, and entertain all the time with the stuff they got at their wedding.

I say if you can envision yourself in the future hosting a holiday dinner for extended family, or if you see yourself entertaining a whole bunch, register for the pure basics - white wine, red wine, water goblets. The specialty stuff can come later as you “grow into” it. There are some glasses that will actually work well for both red or white, so opt for those plus water goblets and you’re safe with everything!

26.
n says:

my fiance and i are a bit of wine snobs, but we should have thought about the amount of space we have first before registering…unfortunately we were moving, and the glasses were the first things that our guests bought, so now we literally have five boxes of glasses that are sitting unopened…until the first few break. water goblets are a great bet because you can serve wine, sangria, and even fancy beer in them.

27.
Chrissie says:

I agree with the posters who have mentioned that it’s not necessarily about what you need right now, but what you guys will need in your married life overall.

We didn’t register for any glassware, as we already had wine, martini, highball and champagne glasses. However, I do like occasionally drinking my OJ from a wine glass - it’s very Breakfast at Tiffany’s!

28.
Jessica says:

We registered for a set of small and large glasses, water goblets, wine glasses, beer pilsners, and 4 pc. shot glasses. I looked up some info on wine glasses and found a happy medium that would suffice for both red & white wine.
