Idea Overload

August 1st, 2007 @ 9:34 am by Mrs. Licorice

Martha Stewart, The Knot, Weddingbee, Inside Weddings….with all the amazing and stylish wedding resources there are, it is easy to be bombarded with fantastic ideas! I’ve been planning this wedding for over a year now, and I am having a little trouble keeping track of all the things I want to do. I’m at a point where I have decided that I need to eliminate some elements. Having every cool idea executed in one event might look…..gulp….tacky. Perhaps the secret to a well designed event is the same as a great outfit: Put everything together and remove a few items. Being an interior design student, I’ve learned to carefully edit my spaces. I’ll follow suit with the wedding. But what should I scrap?

While I’m deciding, the easiest thing to remove is this: the candy bar! It would’ve been cute, but for my venue, it is a waste of space, time, and money. My guests won’t notice a thing!

Are there any projects you started working on but want to get rid of?

We’re getting married this Saturday, so I left those projects in the dust a loooong time ago! Still, I wanted to comment on what I think is a very WISE post. I love all the great ideas on weddingbee, but I think the true test is figuring out what works for you and your wedding. You don’t have to cram it all into one day! Kudos to you for realizing that.

I second Aliya’s words of reason. Knowing your limits (time, money and talent-wise) is important.
To address Miss Licorice’s question, just last night we nixxed one thing: at each place setting we were going to insert an herb or flower, each with descriptive hang-tags (i.e, rosemary for rememberence) and custom menu into the napkin that rests on the plate. I had wanted 8 different kinds of herbs/flowers at each 8-top table. We are still going with the concept, but using a waxflower spray at each and every place setting.

We knew from the beginning we were skipping out on favors. 100% of our guests are out-of-town, so they’re getting welcome bags instead that contain very practical itmes (water, maps, snacks). Also recently decided to skip out on decorating the church pews and alter. It’s a tiny, beautiful chapel that needs no additional adornment.

We were gonna do the candybars too! But we scrapped it and I am so glad!

Kid stuff (favors, entertainment, coloring books, daycare). Sure, would’ve been cute and thoughtful, but in the end it was a hassle/expense, and I figured it was up to the kids’ parents to keep them busy and well-behaved. (They were lucky kids were invited at all!) The only kid-specific thing I arranged was kids’ meals (motivation: cheaper!).

Just had an epiphany…. we definitely don’t need the candy buffet. I thought it sounded really fun, but we’re doing so many other things that no one will miss it. Thanks, Miss Licorice, for helping me realize it!

We actually added things 1 month out - the slipper basket (if it came to under 50 I thought it would be appreciated and then my amazing friend did it all for me! I am getting her a great gift for all her help) and the candy buffet (as our favor). However everything else is very simple - no DIY. I did nix apple placecards b/c for our space it wasn’t practical. Great post!

With just over two months to go, my FH would kill me if I decided to scrap the things I’ve been planning. He’s of the opinion that I change my mind too much and should just make a plan and stick to it. Of my every day life it’s not true, but for this wedding I suppose I’m guilty (could it possibly have to do with having only one wedding EVER and therefore only one opportunity to make it special?)

So we are having the candy buffet, and possibly some type of welcome package, but other than that it will be the standard elements of a wedding - done our way of course :)

As we are approaching the 2 week countdown, I had thought a couple weeks ago that maybe i would make a DIY guestbook. Which would be nice. But convenience won as I was juggling my summer grad class, work, babysitting, and finalizing wedding details - and I just bought one from Michael’s using a 40% coupon from the paper. Task done.

Mostly I just simplified a lot of things. I bought the kid packets from Oriental Trading rather than designing my own personalized coloring book. As though the kids would care at all! Our table numbers were significantly simplified, too, but they were still cool and personal, and people still complimented them.

Time crunch eliminated programs, which worked out for the best, since we veered a little from it during the actual ceremony and no one was the wiser. Also, there were no bridesmaids or groomsmen who needed acknowledgement and our parents were introduced at dinner. Saved some paper and a lot of time.
