Lighting Lanterns? No Problem!

August 1st, 2007 @ 11:36 am by Mrs. Emerald

I love the look of Asian paper lanterns, and so I ordered a dozen red and white ones from Asianlanterns.com 5+ months ago. But the one thing that eluded me was how to light them. After some pondering/googling, a little ingenuity, and with my fingers crossed, I ordered LED glow sticks from Technomoves. Whaddya know, it actually works!!

A very poor picture of the lighted lantern, with the glow stick hanging from the internal frame. It actually has a nice glow! I will have all of these pre-strung and ready for my venue to hang. The rep I contacted at Technomoves said that the batteries should last at least 6-8 hours, which should be sufficient. At $1.79 each, these are a steal. Yay! Another thing off my checklist!

Thank you! I was just trying to figure out how to light the lanterns without paying lots of money to a lighting company. Will your venue hang them for you or are you bringing in another vendor?

I’m doing the same thing except with lit floralytes. They shine really bright and hang off the middle lantern. They stay lit for a long time as well.

Natalie - my venue will hang them for free, since they don’t have to do anything fancy like attach electrical lighting (which is why I had to come up with this solution!)

ephemerella - I don’t think they get too hot, the casing of the glow sticks is made of plastic. Also, since it is so slim, it isn’t anywhere near touching the paper lantern.

Is 6-8 hours going to be enough? Because presumably the staff will turn them on when they hang them, which will probably be before they set up the tables if they have to move the ladder around - which means they will be lit for several hours before the reception starts.

Maybe you’ve already thought of this and it’ll work, but I’d thought I’d speak up just in case.

CS - Actually, I think it lasts longer than that and the customer service guy was being conservative w/his estimate. I bought an extra one, so maybe I will leave it on and see how many hours it lasts… I will follow up =)
