Thank You Friends*

August 1st, 2007 @ 12:46 pm by Mrs. Pumpkin

Like most couples these days, we had a dickens of a time deciding how to thank our wedding party for all that they did to make our day so special, and for the friendship and love that they have given us over the years. It is so hard to sum that up in a couple of small gifts! Do you go with tried and true ideas like flasks and terry cloth robes, or do you get more individualized gifts for each person? We are getting up there in age as wel,l so our friends and family have been a part of many weddings and we didn’t want to duplicate gifts they would have already received from other brides and grooms. On top of all of that you have the etiquette rules to follow like, “Something that you purchase for your maids/men to wear on the wedding day is not a gift for them, it is you dictating what they will wear” etc…

We eventually ended up with a hybrid of all of that. We paid for our Best Man’s tux rental, purchased his VANS to wear that day and then also bought him this sweet ass crib board since he loves both hockey and playing crib!

We bought my MOH’s dress and I paid for us to have mani’s & pedi’s the day before the wedding. We also gave her this handkerchief (pillow box from Karen Smallbone), a pashmina and this personalized stationery set from Rock Scissor Paper all wrapped up in these pretty bags from Name Maker:

We also had these flasks for the ushers and the BM that Mr. Pumpkin engraved with their monograms:

We had such a hard time finding something cool for the boys and even though flasks are somewhat overdone, I think they are always a welcome gift for men.  The monogram was an inexpensive way to give it a little something extra.

In addition to these gifts we also took our BM and MOH out for a nice dinner a couple of days before the wedding to thank them for all of the work they did to throw us the buck & doe party.

Our flowergirls got some small toys and a gift card to Toys R Us at the rehearsal dinner wrapped up in Name Maker bags, and then they received the pink teddy bears at the ceremony. For the reception we packed these pretty vintage suitcases with crayons, a personalized colouring book (similar to the one shown here from an unknown Knottie) about our wedding, some small books, puzzles and toys so that they would stay happily occupied.

Have you come up with any unique ideas for bridal party gifts or ways to thank your friends? Are you following all of the etiquette rules?

We gave my MOH a pair of pearl earrings, a pashmina, and a beautiful compact with a butterfly on it. The BM got a tie and lots of fishing gear. So, like you, a little of everything!

Hi BOR - the flasks are from Costco! They came in packages of 2 for $20 and then the engraving cost $6/flask so they were a steal of a deal! They are really nice quality and came in those satin lined boxes.

I’m hoping that my girls will forgive a little breach of this rule for some Tiffany bling (actually, only one of my girls is probably even hip to this rule). They are also getting a week in a gorgeous oceanfront house, on us!

Great ideas Mrs. Pumpkin! I love the little vintage suitcase, where did you get it from?

Mrs. Pumpkin says:

Hi Julie - the suitcases are from Winners (like TJ MAXX, I think?) and they were only $6 each. My original plan was to paint them so that they were solid pink and then decorate them with some beautiful brown ribbons but they were so pretty as is that I left them.

Irish tradition (we live there, marrying in my hometown of NY) is that BM & FG dresses and tux rentals are paid for by us. So our costs are more and gifts less rigid. GM getting tux shirts and money clips (possibly engraved), they are from Tiffany but with employee discount! BM getting make-up case and $100 Sephora voucher and 1 hotel night. MOH getting something around $100 (my sis did NOTHING for wedding). FG will receive photo album/scrapbook afterwards which will be more of a story including my friendship with their mom. All 4 kids at wedding will get activity pack. Their mom who helped a lot got S crystal and Victoria Secret voucher. 2 other friends got Sephora gifts.

Man - writing it down makes me say - this cost a lot, but these are our best friends. I’m happy to put the thought and money into it. Friends are worth more than flowers. And everyone is travelling to be with us (except my sis).

Where did you purchase that lovely handkerchief?

12.
Mrs. Pumpkin says:

Hi Jane,
I purchased those handkerchiefs from White Aisle (http://www.whiteaisle.com/bridesmaid_gifts.htm). I also bought monogram handkerchiefs from there for the Mom’s and Grandmom’s. They were a little thinner than I thought they’d be but overall I was pleased with the quality for what I paid for them.

So far I’ve bought the girls shoes and purses to go with the dresses and I’m paying for them to get their hair done. This is sort of seperate from their actual gifts though.

I’m going with a “relaxation” theme for their gifts, but then I realize that each one relaxes in a different way! Like my MOH likes to exercise, come home and grab a beer and watch home improvement shows! So I’m thinking of making them all baskets that include things that are personal to their relaxation routines. Like maybe for this girl - I’d get her a subscription to her favorite exercise magazine, a beer of the month club subscription and maybe a season ANTM on DVD. Throw in her favorite snacks and a gift cert to get her hair done or something - and voila! A relaxation basket specific to her!
