Hair Pins Are My Backup Plan

August 2nd, 2007 @ 12:03 pm by Mrs. Lollipop

I have hair that does as it pleases, which is usually to lie as straight and flat as possible. My mother fought valiantly against this during the 1980’s and gave me several disastrous home perms, but my hair always resisted and managed to have itself straightened out less than four days later each time.

I know I am messing with fate by wanting to have my hair curled for my wedding day. I have no doubt that my hair will thwart all sprays and curling irons and be back to itself by the time we eat dinner. So, in light of this I have decided to be flexible and change my hair as the night goes on. Happily, that gives me another opportunity to make pretty things for my hair

I made citrine flower hairpins (please excuse the hair in this photo):

They only took about 20 minutes to make. Each pin is made of six citrine drops, an orange glass bead, a 2.75 inch bobby pin and 26 gauge wire. Construction is simple and can easily be improvised. First, I placed the six citrine beads on my length of wire and pulled tight to get the flower shape. Next, I wound the wire above and below the six beads in a weaving pattern to keep them in place. Then, I placed the center bead on the wire and placed it in the middle. This is followed by more winding and weaving around the citrine drops to keep the glass bead in place. Finally, I attached the beads to the bobby pin simply by alternating the wire around each citrine petal and wrapping it around the pin. Just play around with the wire to find what works for you.

The pins when they aren’t in my hair:

I’ve worn the pins several times and they have held up well to my abuse. I am a regular bun wearer just because it is the one hairstyle guaranteed to keep my hair in place for 12 hours or more.

Hahaha… I have the same exact problem and concern. My hair definitely suffered from home perms that just would not take. I have resigned myself tot he fact that I will never have curly hair, not even for my wedding day.

In the 80’s they would use 2 perm solutions and my hair still wouldn’t hold. It’s thinned a lot since I stopped eating meat oh so many years ago and now is even more flat. I dare not try to curl it for my wedding, despite everyone suggesting it.

Thanks for that link on the beads! I’ve been kicking around making a few hairpins to tuck strands back– ala Jennifer Anniston– and secure the veil. Maybe I’ll give it a try…

wow those are beautiful. i too have pin straight hair - i’m hoping it’s humid on my wedding day so everyone else is a giant frizz ball because even in 100% humidity i’ll still be stick straight! :)

i have to straighten my hair just so it will listen to me…and then half the times it still does what it wants. i’m lucky if the curls stay in by the time i finish curling my hair!

The pins look great. I made my hair jewelry as well with wire and freshwater pearls– amazing how easy it is, especially when you think about how much stores charge to buy them!

Those hair pins are gorgeous!!

I feel your pain — I have the straight, flat, and super-thick Asian hair :(

Wow, I love it all…and you know what, I actually really like your hair in that pic. Even though I can’t really see the overall hairdo, it looks like it could be beautiful! Great job with the pins.
