Oh wait… I think I mean the diet… dangit!

South Beach, Here We Come! : wedding diet S473687 southbeach book

5 weeks left + no weight lost + sample dress that barely zips = Disaster!!

Desperate times call for desperate measures! I’ve been on the eat-healthier-workout-more method for the past 6 months with no results (ok, I wasn’t very good about it, blame it on my sweet-tooth!!). So Mr. E and I agreed that we will start the South Beach diet next Monday, right after he comes back from his Bachelor Weekend in Toronto (but that’s a whole ’nother entry!). I am still waiting for my South Beach book that I ordered through Amazon (used, for less than $5!), so hopefully I get it today or tomorrow and I can hit the grocery store this weekend.

Everyone that I talked to who has tried this diet and stuck to it, has said unequivocally, IT WORKS. And supposedly after a few days, you barely even crave the “bad food” (although I am dubious about this claim, cuz I am a craver). I just hope that we can can get past the first 2 weeks, which are the hardest. No carbs, sweets, or fruit! Oh, how I will miss fruit!! I will gorge myself on watermelon this weekend, haha. Hopefully people are right when they say that you lose the most weight during the first 2 weeks of the diet. Just in time for my next fitting in mid-August!

Anyone want to share their South Beach experiences? Tips? Do’s? Don’ts?

I tried South Beach earlier this year, and I thought the first two weeks were very effective! My only tip for those first two weeks is try not to get freaked out about how out-of-it you feel. Your body will be detoxing from sugar, and it will make you feel light-headed and dizzy. Oh also, try googling South Beach recipes, and you’ll find a bunch…great for the days when you’re too drained to think of something creative to eat. Good luck!

Totally works, and heart-healthy. My mom’s a nurse and went from a size 16 to a size 10 in under a year.

The first few days are brutal, but stick with it!! However, make sure you follow it COMPLETELY. I lost 7 lbs in 2 wks 2 years ago, but before my wedding this year I did it except cheating by having 1-2 glasses of wine/night with my then-FI … and it didn’t work AT ALL. Also be prepared that when you go off it, the weight will pop right back on. Good luck!

Good luck. I hear it can be very effective. I have never tried the SBD officially, but I do have a tip: Don’t buy the South Beach Diet meals at the grocery store. I tried several and each one was disgusting and unedible. And I’m not really a picky eater.

miss e! i just started south beach too, and i’ve lost 4 lbs in 3 days. i hope things work as well for you! i have seriously felt almost NO cravings. i have been a little more hungry than usual, but i have just been snacking on things like veggies and nuts and that seems to settle it! also, if you like milk…a lot of times a small glass of 1% really helps me if i’m hungry.
can’t wait to hear about your progress!

lowfat string cheese is a great snack for the SB diet! :-) I love SB because when I’m on it, I don’t feel any dips in energy level at all. And it’s really an extremely healthy lifestyle.

My fiance and I tried it several years ago, after we had been dating about a year and his bad eating habits had started to rub on to me. We both followed it very strictly, ate the same things (though I ate a smaller quantity). After a month of following it, he had lost 18 pounds, and I had GAINED 11.
Yes — I GAINED 11 pounds on South Beach, and I did not eat one single thing which isn’t allowed. Clearly, I did not continue to follow the diet.
I hope you will have better luck than I did!

Good luck to you. My best friend did South Beach for her wedding and lost a lot of weight while on it. She looked great in her dress. She yo-yo’d afterwards but I talked to her this week and she is finishing another round of it because she is going on vacation in the tropics soon.

It works but you need to stick with it.

My parents did this and both lost a ton of weight (100+ combined). But it is a lot of cooking (Mom said she’d never have been able to do it before she retired).

And as the others have said, its more a lifestyle change then a diet.

I lost about 6 lbs. in the first week and a half - but I couldn’t stay awake past 6 pm in the evening! Beware of that … and yes, you do kind of lose interest in most carbs after the first few days. I heard that the diet works because carbs make you store water, and basically you’re just losing water weight. But hey, I’ll probably be trying it before our wedding - anything to make that number on the scale smaller! :-D

SB didn’t work for me because I had no willpower to do it just the way you sould. So I did Weight Watchers and lost 50+ lbs.. that really worked well for me.

I started the South Beach Diet about two years ago. I remember the first two weeks being hard, since I too have a sweet tooth, plus I was used to eating white rice for every meal! It took a lot of will power, basically replaced my rice intake with veggies to get me full and snacked on nuts instead of candies. Good luck!

I’ve started and stopped SB twice. Both times the weightloss was noticeable, and I DID feel way better. In fact, even when I fell off of it, I found that I was drinking no pop and having green tea or peppermint tea with no sugar instead.

My biggest problem is that my BF is a huge junk fan and resists my healthy choices when grocery shopping. I am not always the best with will power, and find it easier to remove those things from the house to avoid temptation.

The hardest part of the diet, and where I fell off, was in the snack area, where I was way too bagged to prepare anything. There are good snack suggestions, but most of them take a decent amount of work or prep-time. beware of the snack urges!

I tried SB for two weeks and gained 8 ponds. And not only did I feel like junk, I was lightheaded, dizzy and almost passed out a couple of times. That could be due to my hypoglycemia, but it didn’t work for me. I think I’m in the minority, though, so good luck!

I lost about 40 lbs on doing South Beach and Atkins. If you stick to the book it definitely works, barring any existing health issues.

I recently lost 5 pounds on an Atkins/South beach diet but I swear that was just water weight. I used to be in really good shape before recently gaining a significant amount of weight. I really began to loose weight that was noticeable to people who would see me every day, was when I joined this bootcamp/exercise class that would meet in the early mornings (like 6 am). I only did it for 3 days a week for 4 weeks and lost at least a size. Prior to that, between dieting and using an elliptical for 50 minutes 4-5 days a week did not produce similar results. Just another opinion. But if south beach works for you then great.
