A Very Trying Makeup Trial

August 3rd, 2007 @ 1:11 pm by Mrs. Radish

Yet another thing I got accomplished in my trip home a few weeks ago was a makeup trial. I found a makeup artist through a knot board and contacted her to set up a trial appointment. The pics from the bride that used her looked great and she has a website with some examples of her work and it all seemed fine.

I went for my trial and showed her a few pictures for inspiration and she asked what my dress is like, what kind of wedding are we having, etc. I told her that it’s a morning wedding and an afternoon reception with a very romantic, antique kind of feeling. So she kept saying that she would do very “light” make up, and for some reason she kept saying … “yes, very Genevieve.” I really don’t know what she was talking about. Anyway, when she was done and handed me the mirror I almost screamed… out of horror, not delight. She made me look like a drag queen :-(

So here are some pictures of the results. I am almost embarrassed to post these on a public website because I think I look so ridiculous. I should probably point out that I’m not much of a “girly-girl” and I’m not in the habit of wearing a lot of makeup, so having this much crap on my face makes me incredibly uncomfortable.

I kind of look like I got punched in the mouth, right? I mean seriously… this was AFTER I told her that I didn’t want so much lip color on and she rubbed off a bunch of it. And this eye makeup just sucks. That’s all I can say about it really. The line is way too harsh and is just way over the top. You can barely even see my eyes under all that stuff! It probably doesn’t help that I’m in desperate need of an eyebrow waxing (which I had done a couple days later) but even with better eyebrows this would still look horrendous.

For some reason she felt compelled to put a crapload of blush on my face UNDER the apples of my cheeks. This has happened to me before when other people have done my make up and it really annoys me. It makes me look like I have a fat droopy face. She also put on WAY too much lipliner even though I told her I wanted something very light on my lips and I’d rather play up my eyes. I have kind of thin lips and this is something I’ve accepted in life and I don’t want to pretend that I don’t. But for some reason, people always want to put lipliner on the very edge of my lips thinking that it will make them look fuller. It doesn’t. It just looks foolish.

The look on my face here pretty much sums up how I feel about all this makeup…. I am not a happy Radish!

So, yeah, I’m not going to use this makeup artist after all. This was actually the same day that we had our engagement photos taken. I washed off the eye makeup and the lipstick but I left the foundation and blush on. It did NOT photograph well. I had to photoshop lines out of my face in almost every picture because she put the foundation and powder on so thick it settled into every little crack and line in my face, and it made all of my pores very visible. I looked 15 years older! It was very sad. Thank god for photoshop.

I’ve decided that I’m just going to do it myself. I have some very makeup savvy friends that have offered a hand, and I think I’ll start going to some makeup counters to get some better products and have them show me how to put it on. I’m really glad that I had a trial appointment, though. Imagine if this is what happened on my wedding day? I would’ve cried!

Did anyone else have a terrible experience with their makeup? Is anyone else doing their own makeup?

I’m sorry you had such a bad makeup experience. good luck on the next trial! btw, the pics don’t look that bad at all. You actually have naturally beautiful features so you probably don’t even need makeup!

Oh, dear!!

The most prominent thing that I notice in the photographs is that you look very, very unhappy. Miserable, even. Yes, you look like you are wearing makeup. But that is not the first thing I notice given your expression. It is even a normal amount of makeup for some people, if a little dark on the eye makeup, and pictures do change how the makeup is perceived.

Not that you should use this makeup artist! Clearly you don’t like the effect.

(Just as a side note: no amount of blush in the world is going to make you look like you have a fat, droopy face. I don’t like having blush under my cheekbones either, but its done to provide shadowing and emphasize the contour under the cheekbones so that the cheekbones themselves look highlighted.)

And given your coloring, I imagine that what you are going for is not just less makeup but lighter colored makeup to keep things light as well.

If you are going to do it yourself, make sure you take pictures to see how it photographs and wear it for many many hours to see how it holds up. I don’t normally wear makeup but did find a nice artist that I like. She put on what I thought was a ton of makeup, but after a few hours it did soften and it also photographed very well, especially the foundation. So I’ll ask her to make some tweeks (to the cheeks as well) but am very glad not to have to deal on the day of.

i had my makeup trial last week and i was also unhappy with it… not because it looked horrid, but because it didn’t look much different than my everyday makeup that i do myself. why pay $$$ for something i could do myself? i want an expert to do it who will make me look even greater than usual! now, i’m tempted to do it myself, seeing as there apparently isn’t much of a difference. but i was definitely disappointed with the results. not at all what i was expecting :(

one of my best male friends told me frankly and cheerfully that I looked like I had a pair of matching shiners.

I think your makeup looks fine… if you were someone who wore it regularly, but it’s probably too jarring a difference from your everyday appearance. you look perfectly pretty in the head shot in your profile.

I actuallly don’t think it looks bad. The lipstick might be a little to pink, but other than that, I think the blush highlights your cheekbones. I can see why you think the eyeliner is a little thick, espescially if you’re not used to eye makeup, but I think it looks very dramatic and pretty. BUt if you’re not happy, that’s all that matters.

I’m actually having a third make-up trial this Sunday. None of my other trials were disasterous, but I still wasn’t 100% happy. May I ask who you used for yours?

I’m doing my own…and you do look miserable. But you don’t look thrilled in your engagement pics either - perhaps because of the makeup, but a smile can make any face more beautiful…

Ha Miss Radish! I’m sorry for your misery, but the expressions on your face made me laugh out loud at work! You look so sad! I agree, it’s WAAAAAY too much makeup for you, for someone who typically doesn’t wear any/much.

I was originally considering getting someone to do my makeup, but then decided to do what you are now doing - took one of my makeup saavy friends to Sephora with me, she gave me a makeover, and I bought everything she used and have been practicing for about a month now - so come wedding day I should be able to do it all in about 20 minutes.

I would recommend doing several more trials with your friends to make sure that you come up with the right amount of makeup (meaning not too much so you feel comfortable in person, but not too little that you looked washed out in photos). My first “real trial” was for our engagement photos, and FI promptly told me I looked like a call girl (in a nice and joking way of course, and bc I normally wear zero makeup). However the photos turned out fabulous, you can barely see that I’m wearing makeup at all.

Good luck!

Woah Nelly — racoon eyes! Definitely looks too old lady.

I’m with you. DIY makeup. Who knows my face better than me? For the love of god, of all things that should be AUTHENTIC and NATURAL and HAPPY and YOU on your wedding day — your face! Do the makeup you love best when you are going out on a really important date and you know you’ll be happy with it.

me baby!– doing it myself with that bare escentuals/bare minerals stuff. i never use make up but i’ve practiced alot, and had my guy take pictures of it too… that definately helps.

boy, your face DOES say it all :( It’s definately the heavy eyeliner.

i do love your engagement pictures!

I didn’t have a trial. On my wedding day, I had my make up done and it was nice. It was very heavy…it felt heavy and didn’t want to come off even at the end of the night. I had a couple of blemishes due to all of the stress and she did her best to hide it but to me, it looked obvious. It looks beautiful in the photos, though… so I guess she knew what she was doing.

I’m so sorry you were unhappy.
The lip liner thing-I was watching What Not To Weat-bridal edition and Carmindy told one of the brides that she hates lipliner, but since on your wedding day you do a lot of things that are hard even on good lipstick(Kissing, drinking toasts, eating etc) she was going to use to help the lipcolor. That may have been why she put it on.

oh dear, don’t do something that’s going to make you feel so miserable. I’m definitely doing my own make up too. I just don’t see the point in paying someone else do something I’m perfectly capable of doing myself. You can totally do it too!

I’m with you, Miss Radish. I think you are beautiful, but that makeup is *not* a good look for you. It looks so heavy and overdone. I think you will be fine doing your makeup yourself. :)

They’re pretty funny pictures! Not that the makeup looks so bad, it’s a little heavy, but you don’t really look like a drag queen. You just look so unhappy! But, of course, the point is that you should be happy with your makeup. And, believe me, you don’t look anywhere near as bad as I did after my first makeup trial. I looked like Norma Desmond from Sunset Blvd. I told the artist that I didn’t like dark lipstick, not only did she put it on, but it was the 8-hour kind and I couldn’t even *scrub* it off! I’m a very fair, freckled blonde, and she put burgundy eye shadow on, and then not enough mascara or eyeliner. It looked weird and creepy, and I looked a good ten years older. Not the look anyone wants for their wedding. Luckily, I found a wonderful makeup artist after that who did an amazing job on me and my family. My mom and my sister haven’t looked that good in years.

I think you’re making a good decision to do your own. I kind of like the makeup here too, but if it’s not the look you were after then it’s not the look you were after. I do agree that the eyeliner line is too harsh and would look better if it were blended. So, trust yourself. Just make sure you do a couple of trial runs doing your own makeup and take photos :)

I’m also doing my own makeup. I don’t wear lots of makeup, but I do wear it everyday and I think I apply my makeup well. I often get compliments on my makeup, and I am extremely picky. I’ve had makeovers at makeup counters before, and I have learned some good techniques from makeup artists but I never like the overall effect because I’m just too damn picky! I kept thinking for awhile that I should get a makeup artist for my wedding day because it’s just the thing to do, but I have been really nervous and hesitant about it and I realized it’s because I just trust myself more. I don’t want to be worried about hurting a makeup artist’s feelings on the day of by wiping off their hard work and redoing it, so I’ll just save myself the money and hassle and do it myself!

Just a warning on the mineral makeup like Bare Escentials (which is great for an everyday natural looking foundation) - it is very reflective so not so great for photographs. Can make you look ghostly.

aww! i’m sorry you didn’t have a good experience with the makeup trial. i know how you feel.. i dont wear much make-up myself, so whenever i get a makeover, it feels like i’m wearing too much! (because i’m so used to wearing nothing on my face at all). for my own wedding i decided to ask a friend to do my makeup since i trust her. anyway, good luck on your next makeup trial!

Oh, sorry to hear about make up! You seem to have similar complexion to me… I use Bare escentials on a daily basis but for wedding, I will use

1. Primer: (to get it all stuck the whole day - in a good way :) Kanebo “10 second awakening essence”. I also know that Smashbox and Clarins have great primers. Try them out!

2. Foundation: Armani “Silk matte”. Comes in several shades (including superpale like me..)

3. Concealer for those dark cirles under eyes: La Prairie. Do NOT use YSL’s Touche Eclat, especially not if you have the slightest sensitive skin..

4. Eyeshadows: Probably MAC’s Retrospeck, tempting and something lighter just under the eyebrows.

5. Pencils: Dark brown for eye brows, and to use as smudged eyeliner.

5. Mascara: Dior Black.

6. Blusher: Kanebo or maybe MAC.

Well.. I do like make up.. :)

i think the lip color isn’t bad, but the eye makeup is definitely too heavy.
