About Mrs. Licorice

I am a very modest lady. I have never been comfortable undressing in front of my girlfriends. As a young girl, I changed my dance costumes under a big t-shirt in order to keep my business strictly that. Boy, was I not prepared for the gown shopping experience! At every single dress boutique I visited, the sales woman had no qualms about stepping into the fitting room with me to watch me strip to my undies. I’m getting all red in the face just thinking about it.

When I went to my very first gown appointment, I was shocked to find the sales girl in the fitting room with me. Umm, hello, I’m about to change here. I politely told her that I am a very private person and would like to change alone. She explained to me that most of the dresses were heavy and that I would need help. Okay. Crap. I was about to have a heart attack, but there was one thing assisting me through this half-naked nightmare: my leggings. That’s right. Leggings. The eighties comeback accessory that most grown women avoided like the plague was my saving grace. I had never been so happy to succumb to a trend. At every appointment from then on, I had my little leggings underneath those dresses.

So dear readers, as much as we may laugh at interpretations of eighties attire, they can, at times, serve a purpose.

I didn’t think ahead…. and wore a thong. I apologized profusely to the sales women having to look at my bare bottom dress after dress….

HA!! That is too funny.

I had the same shock the first time I had to strip down in front of a total stranger too. I did my dress shopping during the winter/early spring, so I just wore skirst with heavy, opaque tights. Usually they would offer a longline strapless bra too, so then I would be pretty much covered.

My gown was from a smaller NYC designer, a man who does the fittings himself. He’s clearly gay so not so much an issue that way, but still so very weird to be so familiar! (Actual quote (insert your best SATC voice here): “Oh, come on, honey, just pop the bra off.”)

Oh my goodness I was soooo uncomfortable trying on dresses. And then she just wanted me to step out of the dressing room with my bra and slip on…ummm hello we are in the middle of the store! “But girls do it all the time” she said. Whatever!

Hee. This is one of the few times that my nonchalance about being naked in front of virtually anyone could have payed off–and I bought my dress on eBay! Criminy.

Maybe *that’s* why I’ve been putting off trying on dresses! .. that’ll be my new excuse anyway ;)
