Vendor Rave: Lighting By Synergetic Sounds : wedding decor philadelphia Z102644.jpg

Early in the wedding planning process, I remember freaking about how many vendors we might have to book in addition to our reception site and photographer. Lighting was something that I kept pushing out of our budget, until I noticed how much it could change the ambience of the reception. We decided to book Jason from Synergetic Sounds and we added four breakup lighting designs to the dance floor, and pinspotting to each reception table, candy buffet table, and the cake table. Uplighting of all sculptures were already provided by the museum.

So here’s a before photo of the reception area:

And the after photo - the reception area with amber breakup lighting patterns on the dancefloor:

As you can see, the amber lighting really changed the ambience of the reception by adding warmth and attention to the dance floor. The museum has so many art sculptures and paintings that without lighting, the reception area would have too many distractions with all the artwork around. Lighting also lets the photographer get creative, here are some examples by our photographer Nicole Polk:

So the question is how much did we spend on lighting? I called lots of lighting vendors in the Philadelphia and it was tough to find one that would work with our budget. One of the best lighting vendors had a minimum rate of $2000, which I think really means that you’re gonna have to pay this vendor a lot more than others in the city. I kept searching and I discovered Synergetic Sounds by a recommendation made by Philly knottie Skichik. I called Jason and was surprised to know that he also worked with other popular lighting vendors in the city. His rates were much lower and he could pretty much do whatever the other vendors offered. Our rate was only $475 which was incredible compared to what other vendors offered us for around $3000-3500. My recommendation is to check out all the vendors and see what they can offer you before you make your final decision.

So since I’m talking about lighting, I’d like to hear some opinions by weddingbee readers:

How much are you planning to spend on lighting and what effects are you including? Did you check out other vendors and notice a significant pricing rate difference? Which vendor did you finally decide to book and were you impressed with the results?

It looks amazing! It’s those “little touches” that create such a wondeful atmostphere! It looks formal, but yet comfy and relaxed feeling at the same time! When you started talking pricing, I thought you must have spend thousands to achieve that look!

WHAT!?!?!? $475!! Holy moly, I would do all that lighting in a heart beat if it was that much… the quotes I got were $1500ish for the breakup patterns on the dance floor and a monogram gobo, and didnt include pinspotting =( We’re just going to go with some simple uplighting for ambiance.

I love the look of special lighting at receptions. Even though we’re having a small wedding, I want to have some uplighting of pink and ambers on the walls of our room. This is an additional expense, so I’m hoping to spend no more than $600-$700 for the lighting.

how do you begin the search for a lighting designer? they don’t seem to be a common vendor on wedding websites. does anyone have any inexpensive recommendations in new york city?

Did that include the labor costs of $300/day that they charge or was it without it?

wow, 475 is amazing! lighting is further down on the budget for me, but i’d really like blue uplights at the very least. i got lucky and my dj can actually do the gobo monogram for me, but the blue uplights, i’d really like to have.

I never even knew what lighting could do for a room until I started watching Who’s Wedding Is It Anyway? It seems like my very favorite receptions are the ones in which the lighting is used in a dramatic or interesting way. That said, I’m not sure if we’ll find room in the budget for it. We’re still early on in the planning stages, so I think we’ll have to wait a while and see how much things really end up costing us.

It included labor costs and even city parking costs. check out some local djs before booking a lighting specialist. You have to ask specific questions about lighting to see if they are familiar with lighting done by professionals. For example, I asked my DJ if he knew about gobo lighting and pinspotting/uplighting, and his response was “are you talking about something like neon strobe lighting or fog lighting?” i definitely crossed them off our list. synergetics was great because they knew exactly what i was talking about and they also worked with professional lighting event designers in the philly area. you really have to do your research about lighting and then call vendors to see what they offer.

We are working with Jason as well and couldn’t be happier. I know that the amber lighting in Glen Foerd’s conservatory will make a big difference in terms of warmth. Your photos are stunning- any photographer will tell you, good lighting is key!
