C Is For Cookie… And Cheap Favors!

August 6th, 2007 @ 5:28 pm by Mrs. Radish

We decided to give out some homemade cookie favors as a way to cut back on costs and to have something eco-friendly. We’re trying to avoid using anything that might end up in a landfill or that creates a lot of pollution in its production (like anything made out of plastic). Anyway, Mr. Radish is quite the baker and he came up with a couple of delicious vegan cookie recipies that we are going to use. The ingredients for about 200 cookies shouldn’t come to more than $50 since we (note: we= Mr. Radish) are making them from scratch. I bought 200 glassine food bags from Paper Mart for about $30 including shipping, and we are going to staple the favor tags that our stationer made us onto the bags… like this:

Pretty simple really. I’m sure we could make these a lot fancier, but I don’t really care about it that much at this point. I’m still thinking about using some kind of hand stamp on the back of the bag. I have one that says “merci” or I have some cute flower and bird stamps. But that will depend on how much time/energy we have left.

We (again, we=Mr. Radish) did a test batch and they stayed soft and fresh for about 3 days, which means we can make them a couple of days before the wedding and get them all packaged and everything ahead of time. Here’s Mr. Radish with his creations. He was very proud of them and made me take this picture. :)

Our cat liked them too, apparently. She has a big sweet tooth.

i’m planning to do pretty much the same thing, including using the bags from papermart. i can even pass it off as “traditional,” since my dad’s side of the family always serves italian cookies at weddings.

It is so nice to read about a bride who is considering the impact of her wedding on the world! I’m really trying to cut down on things where possible, especially the favors. I may even forego favor boxes and just put the baked treats on display and provide a few waxed bags for guests who want them to-go. I also asked our caterer if she composts and recycles, and she does. I’m also trying to figure out how to cut paper usage so I can do an escort card + place card in one–maybe a fruit of some sort? Ideas bees? Good luck on your upcoming wedding Ms. Radish!

Another idea is to stamp the bags — one fewer expense?

That sounds like a lot of work for Mr. Radish. Those are a lot of cookies that he’s going to have to make!

Could you experiment and try to freeze the cookies? Just athought in case you get overwhelmed by cookies as the day gets closer. See how they turn out with one from your test batch…I love your favor idea!

you and mr. radish are both too adorable!
the cookies look so good and the tags your stationer made are beautiful.
that said, have you thought about maybe using double-sided tape to hold the bag closed and affix the tag? the staple kind of puts a damper on the whole effect.

You probably know this, but I would be weary of putting the cookies in the bag a few days ahead of time; might cause staining of the bag. I think you mean make them and bag them a few days later though.

dang. you guys are awesome! i love people who try to be eco friendly and care about the world. we could be friends! =D

i’m trying to cut down on plastic use myself, which means no favor boxes… ppl can eat the favors or stuff them in their pockets (i plan to give out chocolate so they’ll eat it anyway).

Miss Onion

Miss Radish — Can I ask which exact bag (size and price) you purchased. I’m thinking of packing some of our OOT bag goodies this way and buying snaks in bulk at Costco to save money but I see quantities of 2000 which is more than we’d need. If you could email me at onion@weddingbee.com that would be awesome! Thanks.
