DIY Cheats: Newsletters

August 6th, 2007 @ 3:12 pm by Mrs. Petunia

Here’s what happens when you are DIY impaired, but want to be able to do what DIY masters do. You see the amazing work that people have achieved in designing newsletters for the bridal party, and you think to yourself:

I, too, can become obsessed with learning how to use PhotoShop, even though every time I try to add a new element I end up with only one more “layer” and nothing to show for it.

I, too, can stay awake late into the night dreaming up ways to bind two completely separate pieces of 8.5″ x 11″ paper to each other without any knowledge as to how that is even possible.

I also can imagine ways in which, by using a folded sheet of standard size paper, I can create a folded booklet with vast amounts of information in tiny size 6 font to make it all fit.

And then, when you realize that you are completely incapable of doing any of these things, you encounter the dummy-proof alternative to PhotoShop: Windows Publisher.

It may not be fancy, but it’s practical, and in short of one hour, I was able to design and write page one:

Publisher gives anyone the quick option of designing a newsletter using many customizable pre-determined layouts (or starting out with your own blank slate, if your DIY skills are somewhere in the middle).

Of course, now I still have to figure out what clever way I will package and mail this baby — envelopes? folders? fancy labels?

Well, there’s always Paper-Source. If I can buy it, I can dream it.

actually, i have a decent amount of publishing experience and i would never use photoshop for something like this. photoshop is best suited to something with minimal text, and certainly not large blocks of text like a newsletter. a professional would use indesign or quark.

so, definitely don’t beat yourself up over the inscrutableness of photoshop. your newsletter is very cute!

I am a huge fan of newsletters as a marketing tool and am constantly repeatedly urging everyone who has a business of any size, to communicate with clients and prospects via a newsletter.
