Let There Be Light

August 6th, 2007 @ 1:29 pm by Mrs. Licorice

My original desire for the barn replica at my reception site was to add specialty lighting to the otherwise bare interior. I planned on using a lighting company in Atlanta to achieve a look similar to this:

I mistakenly assumed that I could do whatever I wanted to the space as long as there was not any damage done to the building. My plan was to string the lights through the rafters and install uplights around the perimeter of the main room. I later found out that no one can string anything through the rafters of the barn. Whoops. I could still have the lighting company install uplights, but the overall cost was not worth it to me without the string lights (over $3000).

I commenced searching for a cheaper option and found this:

I discovered these awesome lumenaries through the SocialDesign blog, and Miss Lemon also blogged about them earlier this year. They cost $48 each and achieve a more interesting effect with light and shadows than a plain uplight would. I am super excited about this find! We plan on using the Magnolia tree, naturally. :)

I live in Orlando, FL, and a Discovery Channel store near me was closing, and I happened to chance upon a stack of these for sale for only $20 each! I went back the next day and bought 4 of the “birch” kind for a lower price, totaling only $42! They are very fragile, and one of them broke, but I still have three left, and they were such a steal!!! I want to use them on the cake table! I was so lucky! Too bad the store closed yesterday- I’d totally go back and buy the rest of them.

I bought one of these after Mrs Lemon blogged about it and was dissappointed…the room has to be completely pitch black for the shadow to be as dramatic as it is in their photos. I would suggest buying one of these as a tester before you invest in a bunch of them. Sorry to be a downer, but I was totally dissappointed… :(

I bought one of these (just for around our house) after Mrs Lemon blogged about it, and was really dissappointed. The room has to be pitch black to achieve the same dramatic effect shown in the photos. Maybe others will have better luck, but I was largely dissappointed! :(
