We Need Another Song

August 6th, 2007 @ 4:45 pm by Mrs. Corn

Mr. Corn’s parents went to a wedding over the weekend and apparently they did a dance where the Bride danced with her father and then the Groom’s father cut in, so his dad called me up and asked me if we could dance. I plan on dancing to a shortened version of ‘Butterfly Kisses’ with my dad (cheesy, I know…but I promised him in college we would dance to that song) so I don’t think it would be appropriate for Mr. Corn’s dad to step in. However, Mr. Corn suggested that he would like to dance with my mom while I dance with his dad, which I think would be really great and I am so pleased he requested this since he doesn’t like dancing.

So, the order for the reception so far will have everyone outside the tent to see the official reveal of the clambake. Then they will go in the tent and the bridal party will enter and do their dances while they are setting up the buffet. We will have plenty of time to add another dance, but now the question is…what song?

Here is our song list so far…

Bride and Groom 1st dance: Exactly Like You

Bride/Father dance: Butterfly Kisses (shortened)

Groom/Mother dance: Wonderful World

Bride/FIL and Groom/MIL dance: ?????

Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I like the idea of using a song by The Mamas and The Papas … but I’m at work and I can’t look up all of their songs right now ;-) (Two titles that I know are: “Boys and Girls Together” and “The Right Somebody to Love” but again, I don’t know if they are good dancin’ songs.) Another idea would be to use one of their wedding songs - what was the song at your folks’ wedding? That may work. For laughs you could tell Mr. Corn that you are trying to decide between “Sexy Back” by Justin Timberlake and “I’m a Slave 4 U” by Britney Spears. Well maybe it’s not funny in all situations but it’s fun for me to think about! Good luck, and I think the dance is a great idea. How sweet that FIL suggested it.

What about “A Wink and A Smile” Harry Conicik Jr. (FH with his mom) or “In my Life” by The beatles- that’s what I’ll dance to with my dad

Exactly Like You…is that Diana Krall?

HI HappyHappy…the version we found and like is by Diana Krall…but it is an old standard, so there are lots of recordings out there. We asked our band to do something similar to the Diana Krall arrangement, though.

meleven - you are totally on to us…for the longest time we were going to do a crazy dance to Sexy Back…but then we got realistic.

Mrs D — I love A Wink and a Smile!

Also love meleven’s idea to ask what THEIR wedding songs were (and maybe let them dance together for it). For us, that’s My Life by the Beatles and the love song theme from the Romeo & Juliet Movie by — really — Engelbert Humperdinck! (Proud to say my parents’ choice was the former.)

How about something retro for the older generation? Brown Eyed Girl? I Was Made to Love Her (Stevie Wonder)? Son of a Preacher Man? What the World Needs Now is Love Sweet Love? What a Wonderful World? (either Louis Armstrong or the other one — “Don’t know much about history…”)

Might help to have something a little peppy if a slow and huggy dance might be awkward.

It’s Not Easy Being Green by Kermit the Frog? Could be very sweet! Nice for an environmentally sound wedding…

Sweet Caroline (HUUUUUUGE group dance hit at our wedding, go figure!)

Heh, Melanie and MrsD, one of the things we tried to do when we first started planning the wedding was include something from both of our parents’ weddings. The first thing that came to mind was figuring out what they danced to…which is when we found out that neither of them had dancing at their wedding. But thanks for the suggestion, it would have been great.

As far as ‘Sweet Caroline’ we are Yankee fans living in Red Sox territory. There is no. way. we would get away with it without ribbing from our Red Sox fan friends.

I think we are either going to go with “You make me feel so young” or “Just the way you look tonight”.

I’m curious about Sweet Caroline being offensive to Red Socks Fans…is the name Caroline significant in sports? I would think they were being over sensitive, personally…what if it were my middle name, should I change it for them?
*is clueless*

No worries, Alex. The song isn’t offensive to Red Sox fans…it, in fact, is quite meaningful. If you have ever gone to a baseball game and heard ‘Sweet Caroline’ played, know that it is a tradition that started with the Red Sox.

Mr Corn and I are Yankee fans living in Red Sox territory, therefore, we have lots of Red Sox fan friends.

This is why we could NEVER have Sweet Caroline played at our wedding as Red Sox fans seem to think they are the only baseball fans who appreciate that song.

Hope that helped.
