About Mrs. Licorice

A Little Circle of Trust

August 7th, 2007 @ 12:09 pm by Mrs. Licorice

Mr. Licorice’s ring came in today!

It is 6mm brushed titanium, exactly what he wanted. Mr. Licorice is a pilot, and he thought it was cool to have a ring made of the same material as the newest fighter jet, the F-22. (Isn’t that adorable?) I had a rough time finding a ring that matched this description at all the local jewelers. I ended up ordering from online jeweler Blue Nile, and Mr. Licorice loves it!

Here are our rings together. Even our rings are in love.

Did y’all’s fiances have a particular ring style in mind?

My husband’s only request was that it not have diamonds. He is a very simple man who had never worn any jewelry other than a watch before. I ended up getting a white gold ring what has a brushed finish on most of the ring with polished edges. He loves it!

My fiance also wants titanium . . . but is it true that if you are ever in an accident/hurt your fingers, they have to cut your finger off because you can’t cut titanium? sounds silly/stupid I know, but I had a friend counsel me against getting fiance such a ring for that reason!!

and great choice with blue nile . . . fiance got my rings there and I also plan on getting his there

“Circle of trust” — hilarious!

I think we are going to go with tungsten carbide…fi loves the look…although, he was wavering towards two-tone - agh!!
My fi is a pilot too! Are you going to do anything aviation related for your wedding??? I really want to take pics on the wing of one of his planes…we’ll see…

Mrs. Bluebell says:

Oooh very nice! And I love your use of “y’all”! I miss the south. Hehe.

Also, nkm, that’s an urban legend! Your finger is actually safer with titanium b/c it’s stronger than other metals so it’s less likely to crush around your finger thus needing to be cut off. Regardless, pretty much anyone could cut it off if need be. See http://www.e-weddingbands.com/store/titanium_wedding_bands.html#learn

i know alot of people are going non precious metals these days (it does look really modern and nice) — but during the ceremony when the officiant says - … although these rings are small …. they are made of a precious metal and symbolize how precious love is etc etc.. Does that make a non precious ring seem cheap?
sorry if anyone was offended i always wonder this when people brag about how they got their husband’s ring for 50 dollars.

Miss Licorice says:

I actually haven’t decided for sure if we are going to use a line like that in our ceremony. I wasn’t so much concerned about the cost of his ring as I was that he got precisely what he wanted.

Your fiance’s ring looks nice.

As for my fiance, he wants a simple platinum band… it is funny, I just blogged about the ring situation today. I can’t wait to order my fiance’s ring!

i am planning on buying my fiance that exact ring from Blue Nile. However, i read the reviews and people were saying that the edges were a little sharp? Have you noticed that at all with it? I started thinking I’d have to go for one with the more rounded edges…

I think the band you chose looks great! I thought the purchase of my fiance’s wedding band would be oh so simple - not the case! Who knew he would be so picky…lol…I actually think it is kind of cute. He did find one that he liked - but is reluctant to order it until he searches high and low and looks at all the possibilities.

At first we too wanted a titanium wedding band - titanium era is often having fab sales - but I am worried about the resizing should any weight gain happen…I’m not concerned at all about the need to cut it off in an emercency (although I have been to several stores who still pass along this myth!).

In the kind of wedding planning that you do before the proposal (you know the kind), I always assumed he’d get a ring virtually the same as Mr. Licorice’s. When we actually started shopping, though, he was drawn to rings that were significantly thinner, and 14K white gold (to match mine).

And yeah, we got a really cheap ring, and yeah, the officiant (a history buff) made reference to the symbolism of precious metals. I figure only the two of us know how little we paid for it, so what does it matter?

Gorgeous! My husband didn’t really know what he wanted, but I knew he wanted something simple, without diamonds, etc. And I knew I wanted him to have yellow gold because of his skin color. We looked at a few that seemed more traditional, but he ended up falling in love with this one from James Avery, so our jeweler recreated it. A friend of his recently commented that it didn’t “look like a wedding band” - something that totally puzzled me since there are SO many different styles these days.

For the nay-sayers, here’s something to consider: Even if you don’t want a non-gold/platinum band for your wedding ring, really it’s not a bad idea to have something like this that’s very durable and thrifty to wear when traveling, swimming, working out, yard/house work, charity work, etc. Even though our rings are insured, sometimes we just don’t need the worry or damage to the heirloom piece.

melissa says:

ooh ooh oooh! This lets me plug our rings (which were shipped today). We both wanted titanium because we need something durable - and after wearing my ering everywhere, i’ve decided that i don’t like wearing a stone everyday. We wanted something that was a little different, so we went with Bruce Boone of http://www.BooneRings.com. He has been fantastic to work with, and we should be getting our rings sometime between thur-sat!

We’re getting the ones with the tri-gold mokume gane inlay: http://www.boonerings.com/htmpages/mokumetrigold.htm
(mine will be 4 mm, and polished, FH’s looks pretty much like the picture)

http://www.tiRings.com is also a good resource

Tanya says:

FI thought about getting a titanium ring, but we weren’t sure how sizing would work if he later gained or lost weight, so we stuck with white gold. He also just liked the available designs better.

Then again, he’s allowed to wear it on a “trial basis,” so if he still hasn’t gotten used to it after a year, he’s allowed to take it off.

16.
Melanie says:

I’m not sure sizing is a huge consideration. In my family it seems the women go from “virgin bride” size to “maternity” size to “arthritis” size, so there seems to be a series of wedding bands for each stage of life. (Are we the oddballs who don’t resize the original ring?)

17.
AMK says:

My fiance bought a tungsten carbide ring. It’s extremely durable, but it’s more brittle than something like Ti — so in a crushing situation, it will break before it will crush his finger.

Aliya says:

My husband (as of Saturday!) is super-traditional: it was going to be a gold “dad band” come hell or high water. You all know what I’m talking about: comfort fit, etc. Who was I to stop him?

19.
Christine says:

Tungsten carbide for yet another pilot! My honey flies wide bodies for one of the legacy airlines; he’s been in planes since he was a wee baby as his dad flew triple 7’s for Pan Am and United.

We’re getting him a groom’s cake in the shape of what else - a jet! :) Keeps him happy at the end of the day and that’s all I want!

wsukarebear says:

My husband’s looks a lot like yours FI’s…he didn’t have anything in mind, but when we went to the jeweler, he picked out the manliest man looking one I’ve ever seen, in Tungsten. ;-)

eisor says:

My fiance had his heart set on a white gold (or platinum, which was NOT in the budget) band with the brushed metal inlay. But, after trying on rings he soon realized it was NOT him! (Plus, my BIL has a similar ring and my fiance couldn’t stand the thought of having the same ring as someone he knew.) He ended up getting a two-tone (white & yellow gold) band with an engraved inlay. It’s absolutely him and he LOVES it!

22.
Tina says:

We really had a hard time deciding between the two titanium rings. He finally decided on the tungsten carbide because we know how hard he is on jewelry and at http://www.titanium-jewelry.com/, they have a lifetime guarantee.
