About Beehive

Beehive

August 7th, 2007 @ 4:20 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. Ashlynn has looked for clip-on chandelier earrings that have clear stones and a silvery setting all over the internet and everywhere else.  Any suggestions?  Her portraits are in two weeks!
  2. maverika is looking for simple gold party dresses for her flower girls that are 4 and 7, for under $200 and that are easy to order online.  Any help is greatly appreciated.
  3. ot wants to know how to address an invitation to a married couple where you’re only friends with the wife (not that she doesn’t like the husband, but she is a work friend).
  4. Kamy is looking for 40 yeards of fuchsia dupioni silk for table runners.  She’s tried to order twice from Fashion Fabrics Club and they keep cancelling her order because they don’t have enough.  Does anyone know where she can order it for less than $15 a yard?
  5. Meg Fox wants to know the best place to sell gowns without doing ebay?  Are there any boards that are up to date?
  6. ML wants to know the advantages and disadvantages of having a kids table.
  7. jessi is stressing about inner envelopes.  Does she have to use them?  Would it be tacky to put “Weddingbee and guest” on the outer envelope?
  8. Amy’s dress is strapless and has a very low back, so it cuts sharply down at the side, and the sides of all bras she’s tried keep showing (by the underwire and side of the cup).  She has tried cups but they don’t seem to look right.  Has anyone found bras that are low on the sides?

ot–for my FI’s work friends, I made sure he got the proper spelling of the spouse’s name, and I was going to do Dick and Jane Smith. I don’t know if this is the “right” way or not..

ot - Even though you’ve never met or don’t know the husband well, it’s still correct to address it the same way you would to any other married couple. i.e. Mr. and Mrs. Hisfirstname Hislastname, or Mr. Hisfirst and Mrs. Herfirst Hislastname.

Jessi - I think it’s fine to skip inner envelopes. They’re traditionally included, but it’s not uncommon to exclude them nowadays. I’m skipping ‘em! It’s still best to find out the complete name of guests too though, if possible. Only address to “and guest” if you really have no way of finding out who the guest will be.

OT- the proper way is just to address it like anyone else Mr. and Mrs. John Doe.

Meg- you should try Preowned wedding dresses dot com. The seem to be a reputable site with lots of daily hits.

Chandelier earrings => Check out Evesaddiction.com They’ve carried some really beautiful chandelier earrings that are pretty reasonably priced. A lot of their styles are sterling silver (with rhodium) and I’ve always been happy with their “not cheap” look when I’ve ordered from them. Also, shipping is pretty fast and customer service is awesome to deal with.

Jessi - I was paranoid at first but also skipped the inner envelopes for my casual wedding reception. When I addressed the outside envelope I put “& guest” on the line below the individuals name and wrote in a font that was about half as big as the rest of the name and address- they actually looked decent.

Good luck.

Kamy– I bought mine on eBay. I forget if this is the seller I used, but their eBay store has plenty of dupioni silk fabric with hundreds of yards available: http://stores.ebay.com/EXOTIC-TEXTILES-BY-FABRICFREAK

Meg Fox– http://www.preownedweddingdresses.com is a pretty good site– it gets updated every week.

jessi– I just put “and guest” on my outer envelopes and it looked fine. No one commented.

Amy– have you tried the NuBra? You can place it anywhere on your chest, so it wouldn’t show on the sides. You could even get a smaller size than you really are, just so you could stick it further towards the center of your chest to prevent showing.

Jessi - I skipped the inner envelopes. I put a note inside to say “You are welcome to bring a guest” for the single people.

Jessi- you can do what they call a ‘belly band’ (a ribbon or strip of paper wrapped around and bundling your invite and enclosures) if you think you want it to look more polished than just skipping it.

even fancy pants invitation designers are doing that instead of inner envelopes. ;)

Ashlynn– as a last resort, go to a craft store, buy clip on earring backs, and attach them to regular chandelier earrings. You could clip off the posts with wire cutters, and use superglue to attach the new backs.

New Question: Anyone know of a good seamstress in the New Orleans area?? One of my bridesmaids is in dire need of a seamstress, aka someone who can work small miracles. Thanks!

hello, i want to make pomanders for my wedding like the DIY ones I’ve seen (ex: mrs. plum beautiful wedding decors) - but cant find anywhere online that tells how to make them in details. Does anyone know where to start? Do you usually use silk flower heads? If so, where do you buy them? If anyone can help, I’d appreciate it! Thanx!

Marika, try http://www.netbride.com - I loved the dresses that I got from there.

New question: Does anyone know where I can get Transformers/Autobot cufflinks?

jessi - We didn’t use inner envelopes either. For the people in long-term relationships I put both names on the envelope (and wrote whoever I knew better first). For people who could bring any date, I hand-wrote a short note on the RSVP card that said “You are welcome to bring a guest. Please respond with their name.”

Jessi,
I also worried about that. I got around it by buying paper strips through Envelopements and wrapping them around the invitations. I glued them in the back and wrote the names on the front. I love the way they turned out. This way, I wrote the main person’s name on the outer envelope and just wrote “So-and-So & Guest” on the band.

Ashlynn — Not sure where you live, but easy to find in NYC. If you find a pierced set you like, can convert to clip on?

ot — You’ll need to get your coworker’s husband’s name (first & last) and address it to both of them, just like any other married couple.

Meg Fox — Craig’s list. Or a local consignment shop. In NYC, there are bridal consignment shops.

Amy — Can seamstress build a bra into the dress?

Maverika- maybe here? http://www.shopbriarpatch.com/girdrescol.html

ML- adv: kids have people their age to be with, they can often be kept occupied by supplies bought for the whole table, parents can enjoy the break from the kids.
disadv: parents might have to help with eating, worried parents might spend more time there than at their own table

Jessi, I didn’t use inner envelopes either. I mean, I love these kinds of old conventions and all, but on the other hand, it’s kind of a waste of paper. Anyway, if you have “and guests” I wouldn’t write it on the envelope, but instead I’d attach a post-it note and write a personal note to your friend saying that they’re welcome to bring a date/SO.

New Question-
I just received an invitation to (try to follow) my fiance’s cousin’s fiance’s bridal shower. Neither FI or I have never met her, and we aren’t close with FI’s cousin, and the shower is being held about 10 hours from where we live. I feel like my invite to this is a little odd…

There is no way I’m going to attend because:
- it is only 2 weeks after our wedding (which is also a hike from where we currently live),
-we are both grad students (so vacation time & money are sparse especially with paying for our own wedding)
-and because I don’t even know her!
Am I obligated to send a gift?

Meg Fox - Lots of brides sell their WR items on The Knot…but most of those are brides that have been there for the entire process. Craigslist.com?

jessi - I didn’t have inner envelopes and put “and guest” on the outside…I don’t believe anyone knows the difference but wedding crazies like all of us. ;-) In most cases if you can researcha dn get the name of someone coming as a guest, that’s the best option…but trust me, all worked out just fine with the “and guest” addressing. No one brought extras. You may wnat to specify on your RSVP a line for names and/or number of reserved spots if numbers and/or doing meal choices, a seating chart, etc.

Kamy - I ordered a ton of Silk Dupioni for table runners from Fabric.com. Their promotionally priced colors are are about $11/yard, and they frequently run sales/offer sales promotions through their mailing list.

ML- I think it’s nicer to have kids with their parents, so they feel included in the wedding (and so their parents/grandparents/aunts/uncles/cousins can keep an eye on them… little kids are going to end up there anyway, so you might as well give them a chair so that they don’t sit on laps.)

Amy- definitely go with the stick-on bra (just be prepared to wash off the ’sticky’ before you change in to lingerie).

Request/Question for the bee - I have broken all rules and continued gazing at wedding dresses that I either think I should have tried on or bought, etc. - i.e. some wedding dress regret. Don’t get me wrong, I honestly do not dislike the dress - I really like it actually - but I don’t get “oh my god - my wedding dress!” feeling - the biggest concern i have about it in the bust area - it has an asymmetrical shaped detailing on the bust - and i feel like this is something i’ve seen over and over on wedding dresses and that it is a little outdated? basically what i’m saying is that i need some reassurance that i don’t look like i bought my dress 5-10 years ago! i’ll post the link here for the front and back of the dress. you’ll have to excuse the wierd expressions on my face - i didn’t know when the pictures were being taken! i swear i’m happier in person! anyway, let me know what you think!

Andria -
Your dress definitely doesn’t look 5-10 years old. A lot of dresses have the ruching/or gathering at the side. Pretty dress!

I got a beautiful flower girl dress on this site for only $25 ($36 after shipping). It looked better than many of the $100 ones I’ve seen in stores.

New question: Has anyone used silk flowers for their wedding? How did it look and where did you find them. I’ve heard of Hibiscus Florals, but they’re a bit out of my price range.

New question- Can anyone provide any creative, thoughtful yet not bank breaking ideas on what to give our parents as their wedding gifts for all they have done.

Kamy- http://www.denverfabrics.com has a whole lot of fushia dupioni - I ordered my wedding dress fabric through them and couldn’t be happier with their speed and service.

Ashlynn - Check out etsy.com. There are a whole lot of jewelry makers there, and if you convo a seller you particularly like, I bet they could either make or adapt something to suit your needs.

Good luck!

Andria…that dress is absolutely beautiful on you! i actually really like the ruching/gathering on the side because it makes the dress look different from other simple dresses. the back is beautiful too!

I have a question about the toss bouquet. Obviously we don’t toss our own bouquet, so should I ask the florist to make another one? or do I buy one with fake flowers?

New question:
I’m wondering how people handle tips for the make-up and hair trial. Do you give the artist a tip after the trial, or wait until the wedding?

Lauren - I tipped after my hair practice. (he also gave me half the rate he would normally charge, so i definitely wanted to tip him).

Hmmm, it’s not showing on the link, but in my email someone was asking about a cake price.

Yes, it should go down, perhaps it’s not because the cake is small and your baker has a minimum price for cakes. If that’s the case then perhaps she can reduce the size and agree to make you a small matching anniversary tier. Or agree to make the cake smaller and do more decoration. $18 is waaay too much for a cake unless it’s topsy turvey and covered with hand made sugar flowers with sugar lace applique and a really special filling : )
