We previously featured Melissa’s diy cake toppers inspired by the ones from Patch NYC, and now she’s submitting them and her save the dates into the diy contest!
The save the dates
First there was the super special 1st edition misprint. Spell check doesn’t work when you have a space between each letter of the word in caps.
So after correcting the spelling, I printed the stickers:
In true diy form, I had this idea a few months ago, and as I was working on them, I read about the same exact thing in Martha Stewart Weddings. But, I liked that she put the city of the wedding on the sticker, so I ganked that. So we’re even, martha.
Then I cut the stickers to size and attached them with double-sided tape to the cards I printed.
The magnets were magnetic business cards - I used a pic from our trip to Tucson, AZ this spring and cropped it, sized it, added lettering and printed. Super easy.
Here’s the envelope lining I did for the save the dates. Cheap scrapbooking paper and nice envelopes.
I took one of the envelopes apart, and used it to make a template to do the stencil with - I had to make sure to take off a few millimeters on each side so that it would fit into the envelope. Then I just went to hobby lobby and got some cheap scrapbook paper and some gluestick and tada!

oooh, i did something similar with the stickers! people really got a kick out of them!
I’m sorry, as I am a wedding amateur, but what were the stickers for? Just so people could plop them onto their calendars?
i like the envelope liners. if i didn’t use an envelope opener [i.e. butterknife] to open my letters, i’d so do that.

Hey, those stickers would be particularly well suited to a dentist getting married!
We stuck that same size sticker on the backs of the favors, to (a) hold the names on, and (b) assign tables.
Hands down the cake toppers b/c the “designer” ones go for $500 a piece! Hers are just as cute and she exposes the others for the wedding scam that they are.
BaghdadBride - I don’t think the PatchNYC cake toppers are a scam at all. After having made one, I could see how a designer boutique could charge that much for something handmade. Like I said in my post, I don’t have that kind of money, so I made my own. I know lots of people do have the cash, and I salute PatchNYC in their crafty-buisness. If I were to make these to sell (which I won’t because I ttly took the idea) I’d charge at least $250 - $300 myself. So.
I guess I’m just trying to clarify art vs. scam. I will *TOTALLY* agree that there are wedding scams out there. I went for my hair trial, and they told me that a “wedding updo” cost more than an “updo”, but no one in the salon could tell me why. Naturally, I got the updo for the normal, non-scam price.
But when it comes to items that are essentially art, I think if you are getting quality, handmade product, then that’s going to cost you. Unless (cue trumpets) you go DIY!!! 
As an artist myself, it’s always important to me that things like that are clear, and that other artists are respected.
