Hi everyone! I’m so, sooo happy to be the newest member of the Weddingbee team! I was first introduced to this site when my FSIL became a Weddingbee blogger last year. Yes, that’s right - Mrs. Poppy (she was married just two weeks ago and her wedding was beeewooootiful) is married to my fiance’s brother! Since then, I would read Weddingbee intermittently, and when I got engaged Weddingbee quickly became one of my favorite websites.
A little background on me and Mr. Peony: we attended the same university and the very first time we met was my freshman year (he was a senior) at a party. He hit on me, and I ran away.
Of course, he claims that he doesn’t remember this at all, but I remember as clearly as it was yesterday. Fast forward a few years: we started hanging out together because our friends ran in similar circles. He soon became one of my best friends, and several months later, he made the first move. Three and a half years later, he asked for my hand in marriage.
Mr. Peony and I have so much in common that sometimes it’s creepy. We’re both the eldest of two siblings. We both seriously studied the violin before college (although he’s just a bit better than me
). We both have crowns on our upper front teeth - he lost his original in a dodgeball incident and I lost mine in a bicycle accident. We have the same birthday numbers: his is 1/27 and I’m 12/7. We also share the same love of computers, gadgets, Scrubs, all things Apple, 80’s music (we’ll have plenty of that at our wedding)….the list goes on and on.
At the same time, we balance each other in terms of personality. He is one of the most outgoing and social people I know - he’s the type who can walk into a room full of strangers and come out with a new best friend. I’m very introverted and can be painfully shy (which often gets confused for being aloof). He’s better at the hard-core, technical aspects of computing while I tend to concentrate on GUI and computer graphics. I can be very passionate and sometimes go a little too crazy with my overactive imagination; he’s the levelheaded, logical one who brings me back to earth.
We both have some great ideas for our wedding and we’re hoping to make it the biggest, most fun party of our lives! Thank you for joining us on our ride!
To end my first post I’d like to share the wedding vows exchanged in one of my favorite books, Love Story by Erich Segal (the movie version is pretty good too). The first is an excerpt from Sonnet XXII of Sonnets of the Portugese by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and the second is from Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass, an excerpt from “Song of the Open Road.”
When our two souls stand up, erect and strong,
Face to face, silent, drawing nigh and nigher,
Until the lengthening wings break into fire
At a curvèd point,–what bitter wrong
Can the earth do to us, that we should not long
Be here contented? Think. In mounting higher,
The angels would press on us and aspire
To drop some golden orb of perfect song
Into our deep, dear silence.
I give you my hand!
I give you my heart more precious than money,
I give you myself, before preaching or law;
Will you give me yourself? Will you come travel with me?
Shall we stick by each other as long as we live?
Although the book has a tragic ending, these poems are so beautiful that I’m thinking about adding these as readings at our wedding, or even incorporating them into our vows….what do you think?
