I don’t think I was ever more indecisive about an article of clothing as I was about my wedding dress. There’s no point to this post other than to provide a fine excuse for looking at pretty frocks.
Observe, the bridal gown search…
Although I wanted to inject some traditional elements into the overall scheme of the wedding, I wanted a completely atypical dress.
Upon laying eyes on this at Kelly’s Closet, I immediately fancied myself as ethereal, whimsical bride:

What a lovely confection! The dress did work on my figure, but my friend suggested I try on more gowns before I make a final decision.
Next up were two Jenny Lee’s:
The first dress was SEX-AY. I love the way it skimmed the body, but I was not digging the low neckline. I’m not comfortable baring cleavage on most days, so it’s definitely not happening on my wedding day. One of my bridesmaids pointed out that the pick-ups on the second dress sliced me horizontally, which is not the best look for someone who is 4’11’”. I agreed with her.
The search continued at Priscilla of Boston (I heart Melissa Sweet!):
I love the tiers of Melissa Sweet’s Lark. They almost hop when you walk in it!
Although I was intimidated by this shop, I decided to try Bridals by Lori:

The top dress is by Alvina Valenta and the bottom is by Romona Keveza. I liked that these were crisp, light, and romantic. My top contenders were far departures from my original vision:
This Melissa Sweet’s Fern. It’s not your typical bridal gown, and when I wore it, I felt a certain zing. I thought it could be the one until I tried this:

This Lazaro gown was on a mannequin at Bridals by Lori. My best friend and I passed by it and said, “Eh, that one’s pretty cute. Might as well give it a try.” I’m very glad I did. When I slipped it on, I finally had that “bridal” feeling, and it surpassed every other gown. Too bad I don’t follow my gut instinct! In moments of weakness and insecurity, I wished I had purchased the Melissa Sweet Fern. When this happened, I would try to remember the way I felt in my gown. One hundred percent dorky, but it worked! If I happened to be a bride just now looking for a dress, I would want to try this beauty from Oscar de la Renta:
There’s nothing wrong with looking!
