Bijou Bridal

August 9th, 2007 @ 9:25 am by Mrs. Peony

I was going to wait until after I bought a dress to post this review but I can’t wait! I wanted to share with everyone my wonderful experience at Bijou Bridal in Paramus, NJ.

My friend Diane recommended Bijou Bridal because she’s friends with the owners. She even attended their opening party and was very impressed. At the time, I was very discouraged by the entire concept of wedding dress shopping because most of the bridal salons I had visited were rude, I felt rushed, and most importantly, didn’t carry anything I loved. Some facilities were downright dirty and tacky. One bridal consultant kept pressuring me try on dresses I didn’t care for at all and another watched over me like a hawk, never leaving my side, even in the dressing room where I like my privacy.

But I decided to make an appointment with Bijou Bridal anyway since Paramus isn’t too far from where I live. And as soon as I walked in, I knew it was different.

Now I haven’t been wedding dress shopping in high-end stores because I didn’t want to fall in love with a gown that is out of my budget…but Bijou definitely has the best facilities of everywhere I’ve visited (and I’ve been to 6 so far). The building is four stories tall with very elegant finishes. As soon as you walk in there is a waiting area with comfortable couches, where you can watch bridal fashion shows on a plasma TV or read from their large selection of wedding magazines.

After filling out a form and waiting just a couple of minutes (at another salon I had waited 45 minutes….with an appointment!) my mother and I were introduced to our consultant. I love, LOVED our consultant! I’m so angry at myself for not remembering her name (I’m horrible with names) because I would recommend her in a heartbeat. After explaining how the gowns were organized, she pulled up a empty rack to place the dresses I wanted to try on and kinda…disappeared into the walls. Whenever I saw a gown I liked and started to lift it out, she would come out of nowhere and take over right away. Whenever I had a question she would answer it thoroughly and patiently. She was just the right combination of not-too-pushy, friendly, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable.

When I was done picking out the dresses I wanted to try on, we all boarded the elevator to the fourth floor where the dressing rooms are located. Usually I’m so nervous about stripping down in front of a stranger and having them dress me, but our consultant was so nice and kept the conversation going that I didn’t mind at all.

I tried on five dresses that day…..and instantly fell in love with one dress by Sophia Tolli. I think this may be THE ONE. When I expressed my feelings for the dress to my consultant, she told me that their in-house alterations (done by two Italian ladies who used to be former wedding dress designers and makers) cap at $250. Say what?

“I’m sorry, I must be mistaken. $250 is the minimum for your alterations, correct?”

“Good gracious no! We would charge $250 if we had to take apart the entire dress and resew it top to bottom. In most cases it’s a lot less.”

All the other salons I’ve been to had a $300 minimum. One even charges a $375 flat fee, even if all you need is a hem!

I have two more appointments this week, and I don’t want to cancel them because my credit card will be charged if I do. However, barring acts of God, I’m pretty sure that I will be purchasing my gown from Bijou, and I want to take my bridesmaids there too since they have a great selection of attendants’ dresses. The best part is that since it’s in NJ, we don’t have to pay taxes!

I think I knew for 100% that Bijou was super-customer-oriented as I was preparing to leave. At every other bridal salon I’ve visited, the consultant would give me a business card with her work hours written on it so that if I returned to buy a dress, she could get the commission for it. So before I left, I asked our consultant at Bijou which days she works and she said, “Just come back whenever you’re free! If I’m not here someone else can help you - whenever is most convenient for you is fine with us!”

…..can I marry a bridal salon?

wow… i was JUST there on Saturday and I’m getting a Sophia Tolli dress they had too!!! Was your consultant named Julie? She’s a friend of mine from highschool and I agree w/ everything you wrote. I’m getting my dress from there, I think the place is sooo much better than anyone else I went to.

wow. that is fantastic. I am so glad you had that happen! it actually gives me hope!

I think if my experiences with bridal salons had been like this one I would have been a lot more comfortable with the whole dress thing. I HATED shopping for a gown because I always felt like the salespeople were trying to work angles and actively take advantage of me, all in the name of my “special day”.

Isn’t good customer service — heck, just a nice, friendly person — the best thing EVER? Great story.

SDC - which gown? The one I like is called “Skye” on the Sophia Tolli website. Maybe we’re getting the same one!

Bride of Rochester - I HATED shopping for a gown too! In fact, it was the part of wedding planning that I dreaded the most because I hate shopping in general and whenever I went I felt like a poofy marshmallow on display. But my experience at Bijou changed all that!

Aliya and Samantha - it’s amazing how some vendors don’t realize just how important customer service is! A service with a smile goes a loooong way….

Michelle - that’s no problem! When I called to make an appt, I first asked what their ranges are and they told me that their gowns start at $700 and go up to $8,000. However, all the gowns I saw that day (at least the ones I liked) were in the $1,000 - $2,000 range. Good luck!

Yikes - a flat $375 at some places to do alterations?
You need to find a talented seamstress if that’s the case - my dress was $60 for the hem, bustle, and taking it in on the sides a little bit.

Looks like a cool bridal shop though!

I got my dress in NJ too instead of NY (where the wedding will be). No sales tax is probably the one good thing I’ve found about living in NJ since moving here 2 years ago :-p

Hi KP - correct me if I’m wrong, but it sounds like you’re coming up from from the south. If you’re coming from Rt 4W, just merge onto 17N and keep going for a mile or two. The salon should be on your right side, in the same building as a fur store. It’s slightly just across the street from Kiku restaurant, if you know where that is. Good luck!

ooh paramus! I used to have to pretend that I lived there when I worked for Cingular, because apparently my American customers weren’t impressed with Canadian outsourcing :P

It’s so nice when you have a good experience at a bridal salon. I’ve not had any bad ones, but I’ve had so very many mediocre, not-all-that-great experiences.

Got excited when I saw your entry. I know one of the owners, Julie. Glad to hear you enjoyed your experience there!

i went there too during its first months of opening, though the place was beautiful, there weren’t that many dresses that I liked. The lady who helped me was so sweet. But though they said they had dresses in the $2-7K. There were only a few that were in that range. The rest were on average $1500 or less. It was a waste of time for me to go there because they didn’t have a good variety.
I ended up going to the Wedding Salon of Manhasset in Long Island which also has fantastic customer service and a great selection of dresses for any type of bride.

Huh? New Jersey has a 7% sales tax, although certain items(including clothing) are exempt.

I have to chime in and say I did not share in your wonderful experience with Bijou as a matter of fact I received some of the worst customer service I have ever received there.

I would like to second Mrs. Peony’s glowing review of Bijou Bridal. After reading her review and being completely discouraged by dress shopping in Manhattan, my MOH and I made a trek out to Paramus today. The customer service was impeccable- Rachel was supportive, helpful and relaxed- totally taking my mind of off being squeezed into dress after dress (I’m 6′0″ tall and a size 12). She was not at all judgmental about my budget (<$1000). After trying on 6-7 dresses, I ended up finding a Sophia Tolli dress completely different than what I had in mind- but I really love it and am pretty sure it is the one. Even if I find this dress slightly less expensively somewhere else, I will most likely come back to Bijou because of the lovely experience I had. I would also like to look at bridesmaids dresses there. Bijou Bridal is highly recommended- especially for NYC brides on a budget!!
