About Mrs. Lily

My Bouquet

August 9th, 2007 @ 6:59 pm by Mrs. Lily

One of you lovely readers asked me for information about my bouquet. Let me begin by saying there is a funny, not-so-funny story about my bouquet.

250

About a week before the wedding I had a “nightmare” about my bouquet. In my dream, someone other than my florist decided to make the bouquet and made it really tiny and white with pink carnations dotted sporadically throughout. I have nothing against carnations and quite like them since they live a long time in my NYC apartment, but for my wedding bouquet I had requested all whites and light blushes of ranunculus (my favorite flower), peonies, and hydrangea. And I specifically said, “NO PINK.”

I went to the florist a few days before the wedding and saw all the flowers. When I asked to see the peonies, the florist (who I really do like, don’t get me wrong) was squirrely and shooed me away. I didn’t really question her at the time because everything else was perfect.

Then, on my wedding day, I saw my bouquet and it looked just like the bouquet in my dreams, albeit with peonies instead of carnations. All whites, with pink pink pink here and there (the peonies were also supposed to be on the head table flowers and the cake). I FLIPPED out. It was too weird. Just like my dream? I said, “Take them out, take them out, take them out.” The florist was like, “I can’t, they are woven in too tight…” She had never done it before and was aghast at the thought, but she said she could glue flowers on top — and that’s what she did. She glued flowers over the pink ones. You could not tell at all, she did such a fabulous job.

In the end, I LOVED my bouquet and was sad I didn’t get to hold it longer. It’s mostly ranunculus and hydrangea, but it is crazy full (and heavy). I know our florist was afraid to show me the peonies because they came in so pink, and I think she was hoping I would like them anyway because they were pretty flowers… it was just too weird with my dream and not the look I was going for. BUT, she TOTALLY stepped up to the plate and was just wonderful at making everything look full and not skimpy at all. If you live in Tucson, go see Paula Wertman. I think she’s the best florist in town!

You’re too nice. I would’ve been VERY angry that I specifically requested “not pink,” and then had the florist actively hide the pink flowers from me– only to spring them on me the last second, on the actual wedding day, when it may have been too late to do anything about it. That’s completely unethical. What if she hadn’t been able to glue over the pink flowers?

I’m not a confrontational person by nature and I hate putting people out. That said, ff I say no pink I expect no pink the day of. That’s her professional duty which she grossly neglected. You went too easy on her.

I don’t know what it looked like with the pink- but i can’t imagine why she didn’t just do it like the final product in the first place- that bouquet looks amazing! I love love love it!

I know — it was bad that she didn’t show me. I think she felt stuck because I insisted on peonies and if she didn’t use the pink ones… no peonies. I think she panicked or something, I don’t know. It was hard for me to be mad because she had bent over backwards for me in so many ways. Everything was beyond gorgeous, she was fair in her prices, and she did fix the bouquet. Don’t get me wrong, I freaked out for about 20 minutes, but once it was fixed, I was OK!!!

Oops — Mr. Lily wasn’t commenting there. I had him in there from when we were commenting in Mrs. Bluebell last night.

don’t even get me started about my flowers… luckily, your florist could fix yours. I specifically said no roses anywhere! I wanted an all white bouquet (like yours… beautiful!) and the bridesmaids were to have all yellow bouquets. The day of the wedding, the florist handed me my bouquet filled with roses… eck! And the bridesmaids just had yellow roses with some white flowers.. hideous! I was so angry but there was nothing to do for them.

*and the florist is a family friend… never work with family friends because then you feel bad/ are unable to complain.

I think your bouquet came out beautifully!
