About Mrs. Radish

Sample Shopping

August 9th, 2007 @ 12:24 pm by Mrs. Radish

After going to a few bridal salons to try on dresses, I noticed something… I’m pretty close to most sample sizes! I’m about a women’s street size 4 and in wedding dresses about a size 8. Then I heard about this great sample and once-worn dress shop called White Chicago. They carry a lot of high-end designer gowns here (Vera Wang, Badgley Mischka, Reem Acra, Monique Lhuillier etc.) at about 50% off the original price. In many cases, that meant they were still over my budget of $2,000 but I found quite a few dresses in my size that I could afford.

When I went for my appointment, the first thing I noticed is how pristine looking the shop was. They make you take off your shoes and put on these little hospital booties as soon as you walk in the door, and have you wash your hands before you try on any dresses and they wear gloves while handling them. So unlike some other sample and consignment shops that I went to, these dresses were in great shape. I worked with one of the owners, Ursula, when I went. She was fabulous! The boutique itself is really cool too and it even has a catwalk instead of one of those blocks that you stand on. It’s the closest I’ll ever come to being a model… what fun!

This is a silk Reem Acra with a beaded bodice. It was very lovely, but not terribly flattering on me. I loved the back of the gown, but it didn’t look so hot from the front. Also, I kind of felt like it was just a really expensive night gown.

This was another Reem Acra. As you can see by the look on my face… I wasn’t loving it.

Here I am working the runway. I don’t remember who the designer of this dress was… but it was pretty and under $2,000. I wasn’t crazy about the bodice from the front though.

I don’t remember what designer this gown is by either. I should’ve paid closer attention, sorry! It was nice but it didn’t “wow” me and I think it was slightly over my price limit.

This Alvina Valenta gown was under $1,500 and I LOVED the back of the dress, but I kind of hated it in the front. :( Ursula pinned the middle of the top of the bodice to show me how they could alter it to have more of a sweetheart neckline, but I still didn’t like it. Too bad because the organza train was simply amazing.

Another Alvina Valenta dress. It’s a little too big so the front looks kinda weird, and I don’t really like how much of a sweetheart cut it is. The back of this dress was also very beautiful but a little too low cut for me. Oh, and please ignore my dirty bra strap.

Though I liked some of these dresses, there was nothing I tried on here that was perfect for me. I was planning on going back there a few more times to see what new dresses came in (since their inventory is constantly changing) if I hadn’t found a gown anywhere else… but I did find one somewhere else. Stay tuned for that.

Sample shops are certainly worth checking out if you want a high-end designer gown on a budget. The only drawback that I noticed is that many of the styles are from a season or two ago, so if you want something really cutting edge you probably won’t find it. I think most major cities have quite a few sample shops and if anyone is in the Chicago area, White Chicago is definitely a good bet. If you are looking to sell your dress after the big day I think White Chicago gives a pretty good deal and they sell most of their dresses. The other good thing about getting a sample is that you don’t have to wait for it to come in, so if you are cutting it close or in a hurry you could consider this option.

Did anyone get their dress from a sample or consignment shop? Or did you look at any 2nd hand/sample dresses?

Sadly, I am not a size 4, or an 8 or even a 12 for that matter. I am a 14, which in wedding dress sizes translates to an 18.

Bummer…these dresses are all stunning.

i got mine at a salon sample sale for 70% off :) precisely on budget! i found that a lot of salons don’t generally advertise when their sample sales are… you have to call and ask.

I actually got my dress off of eBay. It was brand new, never worn, had its tags, and it looks amazing. I had tried the dress on in stores and knew it was one of my favorites. And at 50% off retail price, it was a great steal - especially for budget brides like myself. :)

But the dresses you tried on are beautiful, I especially like the organza train! Good luck on your dress hunt!

I got my Reem Acra dress from Kleinfield in New York. We waited online from 1PM - 5PM to get in the door. Poor Mommy was with me the whole time. It was all worth it, i got my dream dress, its still pricey. but consider how much the original price of the dress, i think i got a good deal……

Yep! I got my dress from Dimitra’s in Chicago - it was a sample. It’s Ines di Santo’s Ava. I’m totally in love with it.

There’s a great consignment shop in Rockville, MD called I Do I Do. A lot of consignment dresses are NWT and they have a great range of size/designers. I didn’t end up getting my dress there, but a good friend of mine did and she loves it.

I LOVE White Chicago! I didn’t ultimately buy my dress there, but both me and my MOH were uber impressed with the service from Ursula and Stacy (the owners). I am using their seamstress for all my alterations as she has come very highly recommended.

I bought mine from Your Dream Dress on Ebay!! A never worn, rarely tried sample Amsale that is gorgeous and incidentally, is the ivory version of the dress Izzie wore in the Grey’s Anatomy Season 2 finale and Season 3 premiere. And I LOVE it.

Oh Man! White Chicago was definitely one of the salons that I had on my list to visit! I’ve heard so many good things about it. Too bad I found my dress at Here Comes the Bride (another sample shop in Addison) and decided that I shouldn’t step foot into another store, in order to avoid second guessing myself. Now I really wish that I had gone to White Chicago FIRST!!

Oh well, my dress is a Demetrios Platinum that I got for 70% off, so really, I can’t complain!!

What part of Chicago are you in? I am in the SW burbs, but work in the loop. Moving the the West Loop next year, can’t wait!! =)

Miss Emerald — I had an appointment at HCB but I cancelled it b/c I had already been to like 10 shops and I found my dress. I figured it would be ridiculous to keep shopping at that point.

Oh, and I work in the South Loop and live in the Ukrainian Village.

I’m another HUGE White Chicago fan. Ursula was probably the MOST helpful person I encountered on my dress search. Although I didn’t find my dress there, I recommend it to anyone that’s close to the Chicago area. I ended up getting my dress off eBay - brand new, Amy Michelson’s “Bling.” Best decision I ever made.

We dated for a long time, so when we finally decided to get engaged, we wanted to get married sooner than later - we set the wedding date for five and a half months later, and clueless me didn’t know that you need more time than that to get a dress at a salon! I went to a great store in NYC that sells donated dresses and gives the proceeds to charity (I can’t remember the name of it, but the girl there was AWESOME, and I found it on the online version of New York Magazine), but ended up buying an amazing Vera Wang off Craigslist from a really cool and hilarious girl. I was so excited - it was the third place I went to and I loved it!

I got my Maggie Sottero dress for 75% off at a salon’s moving sale here in Las Vegas. It was funny, my slip ended up costing a 1/3 of the cost of the dress! I LOVE the 2nd AV dress-what a beautiful train and fits so well on you!! :)

White Chicago was the first place I went on my wedding dress search six weeks ago! I loved the chill vibe there. I’m a size 10-12 which translates to 14-16 in bridal gowns so they didn’t have many dresses in my size, which was actually perfect for my first visit to a bridal salon - I think I would have been overwhelmed if I’d had to choose from the size 8 rack! My mom was with me and both of us loved Ursula too. Miss Radish, I also live in Ukrainian Village! So if I run into you and Mr. Radish at Cleo’s or High Dive, is it too weird to say “Hi, I know you from Weddingbee”? :)
