Honeymoon!

August 10th, 2007 @ 1:39 pm by Mrs. Poppy

We’ve decided to go to Thailand for our honeymoon and spend a couple days in Hong Kong and have another Chinese banquet. smiley5013 So excited.

Now all I’m waiting for is our marriage license to come back so I can change all my documents: driver’s license, passport and CCs. Oh… and we have to plan Thailand out hehe.

Any tips?

We’re doing Thailand too! Bangkok (City), Chiang Mai (Jungle) and Ko Samui (Beach). I’ve found that Ko Samui is less touristy than most of the other islands. Chiang Mai has the elephant camps… none of the touristy riding an elephant in a basket with seatbelts. No. The real, learn the elephant language (Karen I think) and ride bare back through the jungle. I’m not outdoorsy girl, but elephant riding, that is fabulous. I am UBEREXCITED!

We are also doing Thailand, along with Angkor Wat in Cambodia. We chose it because we’ll get to do everything - city (bangkok), culture (temples at Angkor Wat), outdoors (we’re doing a three-day trek in Chiang Rai) and beach (Phuket). Can’t wait!!!

ahhh I LOVE THAILAND! you’re so lucky, Mrs. Poppy! definitely go to the floating market, try mangosteen (best fruit ever!), ride an elephant, parasail (only $10 or so!), get a 2 hour massage (for like $8), and snorkel/dive in phuket. thailand is amazing. you’ll love it there! have fun!

The passport office is very backed up. People have had to cancel their trips because their passports haven’t arrived in time. You might want to take this into consideration if you plan on changing your name on your passport.

Mr. Radish studied in Thailand for a year and he lived in Chiang Mai. He LOVED it there. I’ll ask him for some recommendations of stuff to do.

thailand is great. we went a few years ago (bangkok, chiang mai and phuket) and loved every minute of it. :) snorkeling is a must. the water is so clear and beautiful. oh, and eat, eat, eat - yummy food everywhere. we did a 2 day trek in chiang mai and that was the highlight of the trip for us (we love camping & hiking). leisurely “rafting” down the river on a bamboo raft was awesome!

WOW! Seems like a lot of yous are going to be in Thailand! How exciting. :) We’re thinking of going to Phuket and totally taking advantage of the spa treatments, food and snorkeling! Once Mr. Poppy and I start seriously planning our trip I’ll let you girls know. Ooooooh if we’re there at the same time it would be so fun to meet up, although that wouldn’t be much of a honeymoon huh? hehe ;-)

Thailand is beautiful and the food is amazing. But…be very very aware of scams! After backpacking for months Thailand was the one place my credit card got stolen. I don’t mean to be a downer, but the money belt is your friend :) Have a wonderful honeymoon!

Thailand is great. I lived in southeast Asia for a few years and spent a lot of time in Thailand.
A few days in Bangkok is fun- definitely need to see the famous temples (Wat Pho, Wat Phra Kaew, Wat Arun), Chatuchuck Market (only open on weekends, and get there early it gets HOT), etc. The Jim Thompson house is cool too, and if you want to see the seedy side, Patpong is a tourist attraction in and of itself too. Ayutthaya is a cool daytrip from Bangkok.
Chiang Mai is fun, but it’s a big city, full of lots of (full-time and just-visiting) foreigners- even excursions based out of Chiang Mai get so much tourist traffic that I’d wouldn’t really call them off the beaten track, if that’s important to you (though they are definitely fun).
If you want to scuba dive, the places to go are Ko Tao in the east, or the Similan Islands in the west, depending on the time of year. Both are GREAT. The islands near Krabi have pretty cool rock formations in the water. While Samui is fun, I disagree with whoever said it was less touristy than other islands- it’s the only island other than Phuket with an airport, so that makes it pretty darn tourist-accessible. However, most of the tourists are concentrated on Hat Chaweng Beach, and to a lesser extent on Lamai, other places are calmer.

I just had my honeymoon in Thailand. It was amazing!!!! We went to Bangkok, Chaing Mai and Koh Samui. In Bangkok we stayed at The Davis, in Chiang Mai we stayed at Tamarind Village and in Koh Samui we stayed at The Amari Palm Reef. We loved all of our hotels.

A previous poster mentioned that Koh Samui was less touristy. I found it to be very touristy. If there were one thing I would change about my trip, it would have been to stay on a smaller, less toured island. But, that being said, I loved Koh Samui, it is absolutely beautiful. Chiang Mai and Bangkok were the best, though. So much to see and do!

I hated Pattaya. Seedy foreigner and sex. ewww! But I stayed with relatives in Chiang Mai and loved it. If you have time, go visit Doi Inthanon. Bangkok was fun since I got to visit most of the touristy places and I loved the cheap massages. Got one every day!

i’ve been backpacking thru asia for the past 3 months and just spent 1 month in Thailand. SO!FANTASTIC! instead of Koh Samui (serious tourist trap) I would rec’d you dive in Koh Tao. I took courses at Ban’s Diving Resort (def. upgrade your rooms to deluxe ones or bungalows, it’s cheap and well worth it as the regular rooms were gross) and ended up diving 10 dives in 9 days, including a deep shark dive and two night dives.

Also, I signed up for the 4 day Elephant trekking in Lampang (about 40 mins from Chang Mai by bus) and it was an incredible experience as it’s an elephant hospital/jungle/training area. Book well in advance, though, via http://changthai.com/ as the courses are almost always booked weeks/months in advance. if you don’t like elephant poop or seeing elephants with land mine injuries, i wouldn’t rec’d it but if you enjoy animals and don’t mind getting a little dirty and a lot tired (trekking into the forests every morning at 6:30am for hours) then you’ll love this.

I blogged about scuba diving and bits of thailand so take a look if you’re interested… and be aware that many places have “local” prices and “tourist” prices for entrance fees. If you can pass off for a local, do it!

I can totally recommend doing a day-long cooking course in Chiang Mai. We signed up and were picked up from our guesthouse early in the morning. We went to the cook’s house (she was awesome, a young Thai woman) and made six different Thai dishes that day. There were another six people in our group (from all over the world) and it was so much fun! You learn, you cook, you eat and she takes you to the market and explains everything! We’re going back in October, and are going to sign up for another day with her! check out:

Besides that…let’s see. I cannot recommend Pattaya, Phuket or Ko Samui (way too touristy…). I *can* however recommend Ko Chang, I loved it there!

Have fun!
