The Lilys, Part 3: Ketubah Signing

August 10th, 2007 @ 2:58 pm by Mrs. Lily

I am Jewish and Mr. Lily is Catholic, but we had a Jewish ceremony. Mr. Lily is not particularly religious and I felt more strongly about the customs of my religion than he did (although I am not exactly religious myself). Finding a rabbi who would marry us was no easy task, but in the end we found a very nice woman who gave us a lovely ceremony. Here are just a few pictures of our ketubah signing. This is for family and wedding party only. It’s when we sign the marriage contract. It was the most emotional part of our wedding and the only time I cried…

Again, all of these exquisite photos are courtesy of Sergio Photographer — he holds the copyright on these so pretty please do not distribute them.

Us with our rabbi:

This is our ketubah — I painted and calligraphed it myself:

Part of the ceremony involves sharing a cup of wine. Wine symbolizes joy and abundance:

Mr. Lily drinking wine:

A moment when we were meant to look deeply at each other and to ask each other for forgiveness for anything we’ve ever done to hurt the other person. It sound cheesy, but it was emotional:

Me crying:

Then a kiss:

Your ketubah is beautiful. I love some of the designs I have seen my friends use for their weddings. None of them have been cool enough to design it themselves though. This is really something special.

Oh, beautiful! I’m emotional from the pictures - I’m not Jewish and haven’t heard of the custom of asking for forgiveness - but that doesn’t sound cheesy at all! What a lovely, meaningful tradition. The pictures capture it so well - you can just see the love in the room from the people in the background. And your Ketubah - wow - it’s beautiful!

You’re so talented!

And I may have to steal that forgiveness idea… I’m sure I have a long list of things to be forgiven for. :-)

Your Ketubah is outstanding! I actually got ours yesterday I don’t have the same artistic talent as you! What is the prayer/ritual that you did with forgiveness-I’m Jewish and I’ve never heard of that! I’d greatly appreciate it! Thanks and Mazel Tov!

Hi Jordan, I’d have to think about it since I’ve never considered doing one for someone else. I guess it depends on what you want and when you need it by. E-mail me with what you’re thinking of :-)

That is a beautiful ketubah. I’ve seen something very similar-go to http://www.jessyjudaica.com and look up the artist Stephanie Caplan. She has one called the ‘Yemenite Ketubah’, which is very similar and with beautiful hand calligraphy as well.
