Dyeing The Crinoline

August 13th, 2007 @ 3:47 pm by Mrs. Poppy

This little package of RIT dye is all I needed to dye my lovely snow white crinoline blue! The instructions are there on the package and I literally followed it step by step for the washing machine.

box_eveningblue.jpg

- Fill your washing machine with hot water, add predissolved dye and 1 tablespoon of detergent.
- Soak your crinoline in warm water. I did mine in the bathtub.
- Follow the rest of the directions from then on!

You should check your washing machine often to see if your crinoline is tangled, and go in there with rubber gloves on (you can use those cheap plastic gloves for washing dishes) and fix the crinoline. Make sure you rinse the crinoline until it comes out clear! You can use the dryer but remember the dryer will shrink it so air drying is your best bet. I used the dryer because I lost weight from the time I bought my crinoline (which was a year and a half prior). Wrinkles? No problem - Steam or hand iron it and use a thin cloth in between so you don’t ruin it. I was a little concerned that the washing machine might be stained blue but it wasn’t. Right after I was finished I wiped the inside of the machine with a towel, ran the washer once by itself with the towel I used and it was fine.

I have a feeling I’ll totally regret putting up a picture with my bra and crinoline on but hey… it’s Weddingbee so it’s ok right? :) Plus I was so happy wearing just this that one of bridesmaids told me I could even just wear that down the aisle…. But thankfully I had a pretty dress to wear as well! smiley3 Good luck ladies on dyeing your crinolines!

So cool! This is something I totally wanted to do, but I ended up in a dress that couldn’t accomodate a crinoline :(

I love dyed crinolines… so pretty! You did a great job. I’m a bit sad that I can’t wear a crinoline with my dress.

What exactly is a crinoline? Just like a slip to go under a dress? Thanks

Will it bleed? Or run? I am only concerned with it running if it gets moist with humidity or water or even yucky sweat? If you haven’t found out no big deal, I was just curious before I dye mine…

Very cute! I’m thinking of dying mine light pink. I’m scared if I went dk pink it would show under my dress. Dress is white satin.

I just dyed mine using the fuschia Rit dye and it turned out just lovely!! Took about 15 minutes. I didn’t use the washing machine however b/c I have a front loading machine and it’s also an high efficiency so it doesn’t fill up with water before you can add clothes. I used a big Rubbermaid storage bin, filled it half way with hot water, carried it to the front porch then carried more hot water in buckets out to finish filling. Added the mixture of Rid and hot water to it then popped that crinoline in and stirred it with a skinny piece of PVC piping that we had lying around. It doesn’t show under the dress!
