Our Handmade Favors

August 13th, 2007 @ 7:28 pm by Mrs. Violet

I knew that we had to have favors, but what? I’ve been thinking about favors since we were engaged, that’s almost 1.5 years ago! Some contenders included chocolate truffles tucked in a box and tied with a ribbon, a sachet filled with lavender to remind us of Paris where we were engaged and miniature tins of tea. Finally, I had an epiphany. I’ll use my crafty skills and to make some altered altoid tins instead. A sweet mix of fruit flavored Japanese candy and a handmade momento to store things. In case, you’ve never seen altoid tins altered, google it and you’ll find a plethora of amazingly handcrafted altered tins. Unfortunately, I can’t take credit for it. Believe it or not, these tins are great as storage and even better when they’re embellished with a bit of craftiness.

The beginning… I actually bought 250 empty altoid tins on Ebay for $70.

My bridesmaid hard at work filling these tins with the sweet goods.

The final product! Each tin was covered with scrapbook paper on top, bottom, sides and even the inside. I spent many hours with a template I made tracing the shape of the tin. I also painted the sides of the tins with light brown paint to cover the red or blue that you normally see on the altoid tins, to match with my theme.

Take a look inside!

I’ve made a total of 130 favors. I don’t have my final count yet - I hope it doesn’t exceed 130 or else I’m in trouble.

Love them, they are so cute. They are also very usable for people, at least in my opinion. Someone could take it to work and put their paper clips in it :P

Leesuh1 - the paper is from K&Company. I bought mine from Michaels, but I don’t know if they have any of it in stock. You can probably find it online too but I just did a quick search and couldn’t find it. =( Just like clothes, paper goes out of style too! Lol.

Did you paint the all sides of the tins? Were they hard to close afterwards? Love them!

Thanks Emm! Yes I painted the sides of the tin and it closed just fine. No problem at all.

Did you paint the bottom sides? I see that you glued paper to the sides, but it looks like that paper didn’t reach to the very top of the side. I’d love to do these for my wedding, but I don’t know if I have the crafty skills like you.

Hi Emm - I did not paint the bottom sides. I covered it with a strip of paper. It takes a bit of tweaking before you get the strip exactly wide enough, but once the box is close, it’ll look perfect.
