To Fern Or Not To Fern

August 13th, 2007 @ 6:29 pm by Mrs. Petunia

Mr. Petunia’s middle name is his mother’s maiden name. When we talk about having a baby, we play around with following the tradition by giving our, for now only make-believe, daughter Fiona my last name as her middle name. But, since it’s a boring and common Hispanic last name that doesn’t make for a good name, we’ve shortened it to Fern. (Not hard to piece together what my last name is, ha? No worries: there are thousands of us with the same name…)

As such, at one point I toyed with the idea of using the fern as a motif in the wedding.

We considered this for our invitation:

Mr. Petunia preferred this “fern” invitation over others because it looks more “traditional,” i.e. — it’s mostly white.

Neither one of us wanted to go overboard with the ferns! We considered a fern stamp:

(perhaps not the nicest fern?)

And maybe I could have also used the fern on the seating chart and card tables and on the favors, as labels.

In the end, we scrapped the fern motif, although I still think it would have been lovely. We figured: how far can these ferns go and more importantly, are they really “us”?

Did anyone else start out with a big unifying theme that then never materialized?  Why didn’t it?

Yup, cherry blossoms. I don’t know what it was about them, but I just fell in love with the pattern. But then I realized they’d be out of season by three or four months, and that was the end of that little love affair.

Then it was a mostly-pink wedding, but I gave up that idea for the stupidest reason: I thought it would look too girly and I knew one of my bridesmaids would hate a pink dress. So I scrapped it even though I loved it and felt disappointed for a few weeks. I have now come to my senses and realized that is a dumb reason to change your colour scheme, but I have also now got my heart set on a green and white wedding. So no harm done. And I can still have pink flowers with a green and white scheme :)

Oh yeah. Certain holidays scream out for a particular theme and it can be hard to resist… and then the cheese factor becomes obvious and all such too-obvious corny themes must be disbanded.

I didn’t abandon my theme, but my fictional son Gordy likes Fiona Fern :-)

oh yea, my theme was gonna be fire and ice. it was going to be perfect with the aqua and dark red color scheme (which i still kept). i was going to have an ice sculpture, blue wash lighting and fireworks. too bad the budget didn’t allow it!

Yes, we were going to have peacock feathers included in everything, because a peacock fanned us during the proposal, it was very special. And we were going to use those bright vibrant colors too. I really have no idea what happened or where that vision went, but the colors are cerely green and chocolate brown and no peacock feathers in site. And I’m happy.

My eldest fictional son, Chauncey would also like to be included in this play date! Chauncey is very well-behaved and is a geography-bee champion!

Miss Petunia, I have gone through too many themes to keep track of! And I still have a year till the wedding, I think I’ll have gone through another 10 themes by then!

I started out wanted seahorses but my fiance said that the seahorse that I picked out creeped her out… lmao.

I briefly toyed with a pear theme… FIs last name is a type of pear, and we could do the whole “perfect pear/pair” play on words… or NOT. It just seemed too cutesy, and not “us” at all!

I had a Miss Pacman theme I toyed with. I know that sounds stupid, but it would have been awesome!

We’re both white, but we had chops made when we were in Taiwan a few years ago, and used them on a few paper goods, including the save-the-date (and ultimately the invitation). From this, his parents assumed we were having a Taiwan-themed wedding. Um, no.
