A December Dilemma

August 14th, 2007 @ 11:26 am by Mrs. Peppermint

As a December Bride, I’ve been wrestling with what I should do about the holidays this year.

A December Dilemma : wedding holidays palm springs X Mas+early

We picked the month of December to get married because it’s the slow season in the entertainment industry. Basically from Thanksgiving to the New Year when pilot season starts up, everyone goes on break (what an industry I picked!). Mr. Peppermint and I originally had wanted to have the wedding the first weekend of December (12/1/07) but since the date wasn’t available at the venue (Drama! They had told us it was available and then after a few calls they said someone swooped it up. Hmph!). Nonetheless, the timing will work out perfectly: we go straight from our wedding weekend to a wonderful 11-day honeymoon in Mexico’s Yucatan, and we arrive back with a few days before Christmas. It promises to be a whirlwind month in the best way!

My one major concern, though, is when do I do holiday shopping? I usually start around Thanksgiving, but those weeks leading up to the holiday are filled with many a trip to the mall (and online shopping, I confess!). I have a feeling that this November might be a little more crazy than normal, though. So, I was thinking, perhaps I’d start … now? Is that nuts? Maybe I’ll get better deals? Any other December Brides with a similar dilemma? What are you doing??

I am having the same dilemma! We are getting married on 12/1 and return from our honeymoon on 12/17. I have seriously been thinking about buying XMAS gifts now. Otherwise, things will be way too stressful either right before the wedding or when we get back from our honeymoon.

buy them now! or just decide now what you plan on getting, write it down, and go online shopping one afternoon. or just get lots of gift cards (everyone will understand!!!)

I generally start holiday shopping now, anyway. That gets me done usually around mid November (at a leisurely shopping pace) and lets me enjoy the holidays without stress. Definitely start now!

One suggestion, though. If you wrap as you go (which I also recommend), put a post-it on the outside of the gift, labeling the recipient and the gift itself. Otherwise you will–trust me on this one–forget what the presents are and who they’re for.

Shop now and put it away in the closet. Or re-gift wedding presents you don’t want, ha ha. Switch out the white bows with red/green ones. (JOKING!!!)

One of the best tips I’ve ever heard for stress-free holidays is to shop all year round for gifts. When you see something that would be perfect for someone you know, buy it and then you won’t have the pressure of finding “the perfect gift” under time constraints come holiday season. With the added pressure of a December wedding to pull together during the holidays, I would definitely start shopping now! It may seem crazy now but you’ll be thanking yourself later.

Totally agree w/ Laura S. I always shop year round taking advantage of sales or great finds. I maintain a list of the gift stash on my PC. Around back to school time, I more scrupulously review it, figure out who gets what (some gifts could go to any number of people), and who I still need to buy for. Then I keep an eye out for just those gifts. I’m usually done by Thanksgiving. Shopping on ebay and Amazon sure makes life easier for the holidays.

i take notes in the early half of the year and then start buying around now and it’ll go all the way through decemeber…i’m usually done my mid-month at my own pace so i’m not stressed. i second the gift card idea as well. people will be completely understanding.

I say get it out of the way now; it will just add stress to what is supposed to be a joyous time. FWIW, I got married in November and I still did the majority of the shopping pre-wedding.

I like the shopping on your honeymoon idea… depending on the number of gifts you have to get. Bringing something back from your honeymoon for parents and siblings is a great idea I think but it’d become taxing if you had to think about second aunts and cousins etc.

Otherwise I’d definitely start now.

Just to echo what has been said, buy things now when you see them on sale/at a good deal/are absolutely perfect for someone, and whatever you don’t get by the honeymoon, pick up while you are in Mexico.
